College Recommendations for Future B+ Eagle Scout

My first child is off at college, and in the process of getting her there, I learned a lot from these forums. My son, who is just finishing his sophomre year in HS, has started to scan the horizon for college. He is a hands-on math/science guy with great people skills and he is a sophomore, so we are just starting to prowl. He’s working on completing his Boy Scout Eagle Scout project this summer. Stats so far are 3.3 GPA and 25 on his PLAN (pre-ACT).

Right now, he likes the idea of engineering, especially if some of the learning is hands-on and not straight book study. He may possibly be interested in a military school as well, but what I looked at so far seems to want 4.0 kids that are captains of their sports teams.

My son will graduate from high school in 2012 and we live in Vermont. He will likely participate in intramural sports in college, as lacrosse is his sports ‘thing.’

What are colleges do you have experience with that we can start to consider?

Loyola U MD is very big on lacrosse. A 3.3 would have been right in the slot with them a while ago but they had a huge increase in applications this year so I don’t know what that is doing to their accepted student profile.

I have friends who son is also an Eagle and strong B+ student and is a happy freshman at Widener.

Never underestimate that Eagle! So few kids get them or the GS Gold that they stand out among all the newspaper editors and team captains – AOs know it represents 10-12 yrs commitment to the program, leadership skills, tons of service their whole lives, etc.

Texas A&M (College Station) sounds like it might be a possibility. The GCs at my son’s school say that the school loves Eagle Scouts. The school is also strong in engineering and has a military history.

Okay, this is a start … anyone hear of Norwich in Vermont? Thoughts?

Virginia Tech has a Corp of Cadets and great engineering.
VMI (VA Military Institute)is a full military college with engineering

Would he be interested in a college ROTC program?

PackMom, I think he might be interested to learn more about ROTC programs …but knowing no one close to me that’s done that route, I don’t know much about it yet. Good suggestion, and we’ll add that to the list of things to explore.

The catholic schools love Eagle Scouts. University of Santa Clara has a decent engineering school and is not “too” religious. The campus is beautiful and the Bay Area has lots of opportunities for internships and job offers for engineering students. It would be a reach for your son, but the Eagle might push him over the edge.

If you want to stay closer to home what about University of Rochester or RPI?

I was concerned that U of R or RPI may be reaches for him. His GPA is 3.3 and PLAN of 25 suggests ACT in range of 26- 29. Does anyone have sons that go into these schools with these stats, and if so, were they competitive academically once there were there? From a math perspective, he will likely be taking Calculus I in freshman year of college, as that’s the track he on right now.

Maybe Manhattan College and Rowan (NJ). Both have good engineering programs. Best of luck!

Kind of out there, but I’d recommend Alabama, which could turn out to become a financial safety for you if he gets his ACT to a 30 and a 32+ will give him free tuition. Engineering program is decent too

Definitely look into ROTC, I’m planning on applying to NROTC and AFROTC. I will be at a disadvantage becasue I want to major in political science or business/econ and the military is looking for science and engineering majors, so your son would have a leg up.
ROTC would be a great way to pay for expensive privates or OOS schools.

Good luck

Snowflake, how does your son feel about religious schools?
