College search

<p>I was playing around with the college search function on this site. I am a junior in high school. I want to get in Georgia Tech. So I filled out the info for the search. It was asking for my unweighted gpa. I put in 3.4 (My weighted GPA is 3.7ish). Then a bunch of scrub college showed up. Does it mean colleges look for your unweigted gpa? If that’s true, I could have taken all easy/honor classes instead of APs. I’m just kinda mad because I take the most challenging classes in my school and the search results are bunch of party schools(not saying its totally bad, but most people who don’t try and party everyday go to those colleges). It just hurts my feeling a little:(</p>

<p>Hi kopk888,
I’m one of the developers for the SuperMatch search tool on College Confidential. I don’t know all the matching criteria you may have selected/entered into SuperMatch, but I’ll take my best stab at answering your questions:

  • Yes, schools will look at you weighted GPA and consider the difficulty level of the more advanced course you took. However, schools report the low, average, and high UNWEIGHTED GPA from each incoming freshman class, so that’s what we need to compare to their typical incoming class and see how well you match.
  • Looks like for their last incoming class GA Tech. reported averages of unweighted GPA = 3.71, SAT = 1985, and ACT = 29. Your GPA is a little below their average, but of course there are many other factors involved in whether you are a good match, for example, I’d suggest you enter your SAT and ACT scores.
  • If you are primarily focused on that one school, I’d suggest you use the “Find a Favorite School” functionality to “Pin” the school to the top of your results, enter your matching criteria, then expand the view of Ga Tech to see their data for your matching criteria.
  • When it comes to your GPA, SAT, and ACT, of course SuperMatch can’t tell you that you will or won’t get into a school, as there are so many other factors involved. All the matching results can tell you is how well you match their typical incoming class. IMHO, if you’re focused in on that school, you should definitely apply and hope for the best. Hopefully some admissions experts and those that know Ga. Tech. better than I will respond as well. Good luck!</p>

<p>Thank you! Now I feel a lot better now :)</p>
