College selection advice - UT Canfield Business Honors [in state, $160K] vs NYU Stern [$360K]

Hello all. My question is pretty self-explanatory → CBHP or NYU stern.
I am in-state for UT so tc will be around 160K. NYU will be essentially double that at 320K. I want to pursue IB in NYC in the future, regardless of what college I attend. I have no preference in terms of campus, weather, etc. Do y’all think the price for NYU is worth it?

P.S same question but for Wharton if Wharton costs 320K.

  1. Neither NYU nor Penn is $80k today (go up some) - and years 2-4 likely climb

  2. No one can answer the question on is it worth it but you and the people paying - presumably your folks.

Best of luck.

Okay, instead assume both Stern would cost 360K. In terms of recruiting, will Stern provide an advantage over UT?

I strongly urge you to read the AMA I am linking below. The person doing this works in this field and has for a long while. His resume has been vetted by CC. Great information from someone in the field, and maybe some of your questions will be addressed:

Have you been accepted to both UT Austin and NYU?

Only you can decide if you think NYU positions you significantly better (and is worth the cost difference) than UT for IB. If you are certain you will go into IB AND live in NY, NYU would definitely be helpful for proximity for NY jobs though if you are really good, you could get there from UT as well.

May not be a deciding factor but the cost difference is probably a lot more than what your numbers show.

Nobody is certain they will go into IB. It’s like the best dancer in your town’s ballet studio being “certain” of getting a spot with a major dance company. There are dozens of ways that even the most motivated “grinder” can get derailed from this path.

You need to actually get HIRED by an investment bank to go into IB, right?

Agreed. Of course you have to be hired in IB…which most people know isn’t easy. I was referring to whether you are certain that is what you want to do. If you aren’t certain you want to pursue IB or NYC specifically, then the benefit of going to NYU for finance over UT may be less.

Very few kids at age 17 really understand what IB is, let alone know they want to pursue it.

There are lots of kids on CC who conflate being a Quant with working at a VC with working in M&A with working in private wealth management… etc. For them it’s all “Major in finance and make a lot of money by age 25, and a TON of money by age 30”. The skillsets have some overlap but are very different career paths and trajectories. And the value of going to NYU for a field like private wealth management is pretty minimal in my experience. The funnel of the hiring stream is so much wider.

So being “certain”-- I’d question that!

Agreed again. Most kids don’t know what IB is…and every finance thread on CC inevitably ends up there.

Most kids that stick with finance do not end up in IB or NY…which would make a more compelling argument for UT/Honors in this case unless the student is clear about what it means and/or they just really want to go to school further away from home in NY.
