If you are going to go as far as Duke and Northwestern for reaches, he may want to look at UChicago. They have Turkish, including Old Turkic. The Econ department is top shelf and very mathy. But it has zero for sports.
Hard to ignore UVA like you already know. Strong in business/econ/math assuming he will work in these areas eventually.
I agree, UChicago is hurting from the school characteristicsāno sports, not warm enough for recreational tennis, and not that close to an urban area. UChicago, WashU, and Northwestern all have Middle Eastern language programs that are more focused on archeology and ancient dialects. It is plenty cold though! Iām sure we will take a look at it and he may put it back on the list.
Just to be clear, I donāt know if you have a school on the list that is more urban than UChicago. I thought that he knock would be too urban.
Edit to add: UChicago won the NCAA Div III championship last year in menās tennis. The women finished in second place.
UW Madison not only offers Turkish (even as a major) but also hosts the Turkish Language Flagship Initiative. Turkish ā UW-Madison Languages ā UWāMadison
if your son loves both math and languages, has he considered studying linguistics? Computational linguistics might tie a lot of his interests together. Thereās an annual competition for high school students that might interest him and introduce him to the field: https://nacloweb.org/ Thereās a large collection of practice problems on the website.
