I’m a male junior and I can’t decide which I should focus more on. LSU has always been my first choice, but Miami is starting to look a little better. Would anyone be able to help me figure out which is the better choice?
Here’s what I’m looking for:
Major: Kinesiology/Athletic training
Gym internship opportunities (on or off campus) available
Student leadership opportunities
Preferably on-campus residency
Prefer smaller class sizes
Study abroad program (would like to see Europe)
Good scholarship opportunities
Social but not the party type
Sporty and outdoorsy
Currently live in Houston and don’t mind being far away
I’m open to other school suggestions (preferably in the south, but not in Texas).
If you need any other information, I’ll gladly post it.
UMiami has a much better academic reputation than LSu and the two towns where the colleges are located just aren’t comparable.
It has excellent scholarships, but they’re also very competitive. Study abroad is better than at LSU.
Both are big party schools so you’d need to find your niche, both are good for sports.
What are your GPA, SAT/ACT score, and AP classes (if any/ IB, AICE, Dual Enrollment, too)?
What’s your parents’ budget - and can they pay their EFC? Have you run the NPC on these two colleges?
If we assume you’re more UMiami level than LSU level, check out Emory, Tulane, Vanderbilt, UAlabama Honors.
MYOS1634 My GPA is a 4.0. I haven’t yet received my SAT/ACT scores, but for what it’s worth, my PSAT is 184 and I’ve worked to improve. I’m taking two AP classes this year (U.S. History and English language and composition) and 3 next year (Government, English literature, and Biology). Budget isn’t too great; single income with 7 kids. But i have some scholarships already and am working on more. What is NPC? Thanks!
Okay. Assuming you hit 1950 on your SAT (results should be available today?) you’d be in the running for all the schools I listed.
It’s possible the colleges that give the best financial aid may not have Kinesiology. Consider them anyway, because if they cover your need (and many top colleges end up being cheaper than public universities in state!) it’d be a good deal for you. You’ll need to apply widely.
Single income, 7 kids = look into Colleges that meet 100% need.
This is a website for first gen students, with lots of good information. http://blog.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/blog/colleges-that-meet-100-of-student-financial-need/
Two colleges that meet nearly 100% need and have excellent science AND study abroad are St Olaf and Dickinson. Both are far away from Texas, meaning you’d get preferential packaging for bringing the college geographical diversity.
