Grade 12 (worked my ass off , all A+ in mid term exams ) :-
English - A+
Maths - A+
Physics with practical - A+
Chemistry with practical - A+
Economics - A+

E.C - Prefect Grade 11 , Did 50 hrs community service , computer club , vice captain badminton team , a few debate competitions .

Recommendations - Great , my counselor was impressed with my improvement from grade 11 to 12 . So she wrote about the problems I faced in grade 11 .

1) What will my US GPA be ?
2) Where all should I consider applying ? (2 Reaches ,2 matches , 1 safety )

Are those typos? Did you really get a D+ in math & chemistry?

Please don’t take this wrong, but I’m wondering if a student who gets a D+ in math and chemistry, C+ in physics, and only scores a 1570 on the SAT (which is the 69 percentile) should be majoring in engineering. I could be wrong, but it seems that those who make it thru an engineering program are usually in the top 20%.

However, you do mention some problems in the 11th grade; were they serious problems that would explain your grades that year?

Your grades in grade 11 are not good, and that is the year that is most emphasized. Are you international? Maybe you should take the TOEFL. You haven’t shown us the breakdown of your scores but if you have a high math score and extremely low CR and W it would be a good idea to take the TOEFL.

Well , I actually had 2 deaths in my family ! and I found out that it is a cliche and a lame excuse for admission officer’s . The problem is that the Reason (death) is a genuine one . So how do I let the Admission officer’s know that my reason is genuine ? .

I have all A’s in grade 9 , an A+ in science in grade 10 and straight A+ in grade 12 mid-terms (which Is hard to get due to grade deflation ) . IS grade 11 going to screw me ?

I wrote my SAT’s last year (grade 11 , which I screwd up)

Can a 1800-1900 on my SAT’s push me up ?
My SAT break up :-

Critical Reading 440
Math 620
Writing 510

Critical Reading 420
Math 520
Writing 460

What is my GPA ? . Where all should I apply ?

the others will correct me if I’m wrong, but I think a person should have at least a 1900 SAT to major in Engineering. Or, at least a 1300 on Math + Critical Reading.

So, can you bring up your score?

I think the reason that a death in the family (or deaths) is not usually an acceptable reason to Ad Officers is because typically a student might have a one quarter dip in grades, but not a whole year dip. Is that what you were told?

Try preparing for the ACT exam with the REAL ACT booklet, and be diligent in daily skill building…you need to increase your reading and writing scores greatly as well as your math score to be considered for those schools. If they are truly your dream, try the ACT, and then perhaps consider a community college for a semester or two in order to take science and math courses with the goal of achieving an A. You will have a much better chance as a transfer with good grades from community college.

I do not have time for the ACT and I’d rather stay in India than go to a community college in the US.

What are my options now ?

Are the colleges I mentioned with in my reach with my Current SAT score ?(Purdue doesn’t require the SAT from Indian Students !) If not , which all universities should I be looking out for ?

Will my chances dramatically increase if I reach a 1800-2000 on my SAT’s ?

Which all universities would you people recommend ?

I think you’ll have more choices if you can get your SAT in the 1900+ range.

If you apply to the engineering dept, they may require a higher SAT score.

Purdue is a great choice, and good for you that they don’t require SAT for Indian students.

Do you (or anyone else) know if any other highly ranked unis that don’t require testing for int’l students?

BTW…are you interested in a university that isn’t ranked that high “overall” (because it doesn’t have a wide selection of majors), BUT it does have a strong engineering program and does get it students placed in good jobs?

UMich (only if my SAT score is 1800+)
UIUC (same as above)
Georgia TEch
Purdue
Virginia Tech
UT - Austin (top choice - a great combination of prestige, party, jobs and academics)
Drexel (Free to apply… a senior who failed in 11th got 85% scholarship here )
RPI (I got a fee waiver here … )
