College Shopping: What to Buy In Bulk Before Leaving

I plan on attending a college that is located in a relatively small town. There are no big stores in the town itself, other than two Walmarts.

I was wondering what should I buy in my hometown before leaving. Since my hometown has a Sam’s Club I was planning on buying the following things in advance: (In bulk)

Ramen Noodles
Nutella
Cereal
Soups
Laundry detergent
Fabric softener
Stain remover
Disinfecting wipes

I’m planning on taking enough to last me until I return home and storing the rest at home.

Would you recommend I do this? And if so, what else would you add to the list?

Yeah, why not. I had a box of Ramen stashed in my closet along with a box of Froot Loops and Cheerios since I like dry cereal.

I’d recommend buying one of those Swffer mop things, too. My roommate and suitemates shed their hair ferociously (seriously, it was gross) and it saved me from wanting to shave them bald.

My roommate had a ten pound sack of rice in her closet (absolutely not joking). She used almost the whole thing in one year of dorm living. That’s not for everyone though.

If I could, I would take one of those massive jars of pickles they sell at Costco.

I would add cereal to your list, if that’s something you eat a lot of. I do, and I went through 1-2 boxes of cereal a week.

Where are you going to store all this stuff? Closets are small, and I’m not sure my roomie would be thrilled with stacks of stuff.

You can buy little drawer sets at Wal-Mart for $20.

I think it’s a good idea. Bringing lots of food is always a plus, and if you dont eat it all you can make new friends by giving it away at the end of the year! Thats what I did.

Getting a set of rolling drawers is a great idea too. I have one and it really helps me deal with the lack of storage in my dorm room. I also would get some rolling under-the-bed storage crates. I have one and it’s where I keep all of my food.

Something I would add to the list is toothbrushes- I buy 4-packs for the year. Any time you get sick, you should change your toothbrush. living in dorms and getting sick can go hand in hand.

Buy bulk packages of individual wrapped or bagged snacks-they stay fresh longer.
Bulk packs of gum or mints of your choice.
Powder gatorade if you drink sports bev when you work out.
Kleenex
Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen
Pens, paper, notebooks-school supplies are expensive in the bookstore
409 or Windex surface cleaner
Tower fan
Face cleanser, zit medicine
Ask your doc for a prescription for 3 months supply of any meds you are on, let your mom fill it

Cliff bars or something similar that suits your fancy. I always make sure to have one in my bag because being hungry makes it hard to focus in class. Easy to grab and go.

Tissues
Toiletries: toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, body wash
Feminine hygiene (because nothing sucks more than needing to go to the convenience store when you’re feeling under the weather)
Ibuprofen or general medicine of choice
Cough drops (I’m prone to sore throats)
Allergy meds

I bought two large bottles of acetaminophen and that lasted well after the end of the semester. I also bought two or three toothbrushes (my roommate dropped hers in the toilet and didn’t have a spare–which was a little growdy in retrospect).

And it is such a good idea to buy Kleenex in bulk. My dorm was in the basement so the dust from there plus the air conditioner (I don’t have one at home so it took me a while to get used to it) combined with the fact that I always get sick in the summer made it such a great idea. Seriously, for the first two months I was there, I was almost always sick. I bought eye drops, too. God, I looked/felt like death.

Also agree on the feminine hygiene products. I’m pretty sure you have to go to the campus store to buy those in in case of emergency situations which I always thought was stupid.

I bought beverages in bulk too. I flove Crystal Light and V8 V-Fusion so I almost always had something like that tucked in my closet. And granola bars.

Also, I bought printer paper in bulk (two or three packs) because on-campus printing was $.10 a page and the library was far and I’m lazy/cheap. So, it worked out really well keeping a cheap printer under my desk.

Weed. and alchohol.

Definitely bring medicines with you to school, but buying them in bulk isn’t practical unless you’re running a clinic. Just buy one bottle and when it runs out, buy another. Most hygiene products have an expiration date and while they won’t magically stop working after that date they will become less and less effective.

Buy? Yes. In bulk? No.

Cyanide pills.

Edit: I forgot to mention large black garbage bags.

Buy one of those big assorted mini candy bar things (like you would buy to hand out at halloween) at Costco. It costs like 7 bucks, but you can have it out for everyone when they come into your room, and it’ll immediately make you more popular on your floor.
