Money talks…even to an original Hard No
Amazon in the mix for ESPN (no surprise). Can Apple be far behind?
Bezos could purchase espn with his walking-around money.
and bring it back to the greatness it used to have. I haven’t watched Sportscenter in years.
It’s become a train wreck.
I think it’s more that espn is raising a suggestion, just in case… Not sure Stanford believes it is B12 material. Not sure Fox wants to pay more.
Maybe it’s the we’ll take far less money and you can have our share talk because even 70 or 80% less will crush other options.
Gotta have a backup plan. And any financially viable P4 league is better than none. Grab the money and run.
Also, with ASU, Arizona, CU and Utah in the Big 12 now, maybe they’re “getting the band back together.”
Would the following continue as non-conference rivalry games?
- Cal - UCLA
- Cal - USC
- Stanford - UCLA
- Stanford - USC
- Oregon - Oregon State
- Washington - Washington State
In terms of the first four, note that when the Pac-12 split into north and south divisions, they arranged the schedule so that the four teams in California played each other every year, despite being split across the divisions, because they valued the rivalry games.
Are the first four rivalries anyone cares about ?
Unfortunately nationwide- some long term hakes will be gone. I remember growing up that Oklahoma Nebraska was huge.
The teams cared about them enough to have them be yearly games when the Pac-12 split into north and south divisions. Ordinarily, teams do not play those in the other division every year.
Cal-UCLA for sure is a rivalry game, between the two original UC’s.
Stanford-USC was a rivalry game in the Jim Harbaugh-Pete Carroll days, the “What’s your deal?” game was (in)famous. Not so much today, IMO.
All those games will be TBD, because of new conference scheduling and the total # of games to be played.
Typically, there are 8-9 conference games, so that leaves 3-4 non-conference games to add to make 12 games. Stanford could end up with 3 non-conference rival games per year (USC, UCLA, Notre Dame), as could USC (Stanford, Cal, Notre Dame). If Stanford revived the old yearly games versus San Jose State, it could have 4 non-conference rival games per year.
Typically, yes I’m aware of the current environment for scheduling. But wIll it survive in their next conference?
Stanford’s 3 non-conference games in 2023 are Hawaii, Sac State and ND.
Firstly, conferences are growing. Conferences could be 16-20 teams. Secondly, do you want Stanford to replace their other two “gimme” games with another 800-lb gorilla of a football team like USC with Lincoln Riley as their coach?
Stanford will certainly want to save the ND game, because that brings a huge turnout of ND fans in Palo Alto.
exactly, the typical OOC schedule is an A game (P5), a B game (G5) and a C game (FCS). Swapping a San Jose State for 'SC or UCLA is not a good strategy, unless Stanford goes Independent. That said, I believe the Stanford-Notre Dame game is only scheduled for the next couple of years, unless extended.
ACC meets tomorrow - delayed from Monday due to the tragedy at UNC.
UNC is outwardly against expansion. Are the other three still?
On Thursday evening, UNC-CH Board of Trustees Chair David L Boliek Jr. confirmed he and vice chair John P. Preyer sent out a statement against expansion, citing numerous concerns – including long-distance travel and an inability to address “the income disparity ACC members face.”
“The strong majority of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Board of Trustees opposes the proposed expansion of the Atlantic Coast Conference to include Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Southern Methodist University,”
When I was a kid, I watched Dynasty, Knots Landing, and Dallas. Melrose Place later. Desperate Housewives. I love all the soap operas. There are no good ones today - but at least we’ve got this!!!
ACC to discuss expansion in Friday phone call, sources say - ESPN
Thanks for sharing.
The additions are in all sports and will begin in the 2024-25 school year.
For a clueless person like me, why did NC State flip? And what are the potential ramifications for that in terms of NC State and UNC?
I’m speculating but maybe NC State wants to get out of UNC’s shadows. Stick it to “big brother.”
