Below is a gifted link about the various changes and dynamics that was helpful for a lay person:
no.
State and Carolina do not have a relationship like that at all. In North Carolina they are thought of as pretty equal schools. State has more of a polytechnic focus with engineering and agriculture and Carolina has more of a humanities focus and hard science. State is slightly easier to get into, but it really depends on the program. Their engineering program is very selective.
I donāt think there are any ramifications for State and Carolina to not be tied together. They are not traditionally tied together beyond both being state schools. You could argue that in some ways Duke and Carolina have a closer relationship with the Robertson Scholars.
Iāll admit Iām surprised. Obviously itās about money. Makes zero sense. But SMU going no money for 9 years. Thatās a big hit.
But I admit got this wrong.
More money. Some ACC schools (not NC state afaik) have been itching for more money, even threatening to leave the ACC. The SEC and Big 10 have media deals worth much more per school than the ACC. This deal closes the gap some.
Well, the articles that Iāve seen online suggest the opposite. But I honestly donāt know and donāt really care. I was in fact speculating and labeled it as such.
FWIW, Mike Hart of UMich once famously called Michigan State their ālittle brother.ā
On a different note from The Athletic:
Hereās another article regarding the ālittle brotherā versus ābig brotherā for UNC/NC State:
I also think itās interesting, and a sign of Jim Phillipsā leadership style and maybe even a changing of the times, that a vote was held when there was dissent.
Typically for these conference moves itās been unanimous or bust, rather than pit conference members against each other. Maybe thereās been these moves with dissent before, but off the top of my head I canāt think of any, Iām sure some of you might have examples.
Stanford plays Hawaii tonight in Honolulu, so they could easily dump any future Hawaii games in order to compensate for travel to the East Coast. Play Sac State, Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis, etc. instead.
As a fan of a team that will move to the BIG12 next year, I am grateful that opportunity came about but to be honest, I really dislike that all of this has happened. Why do the conferences need to be so big? If you canāt play everyone in your conference, what is the purpose? Other than $$$ I canāt see one. Itās a whole new world in a lot of ways and this is just one of them.
I guess the new name for the ACC is the Pac-lantic Coasts Conference? Iāll TM and otherwise protect that name, so I guess if they pick it, I am happy to sell intellectual property rights. For the right price, of course.
And, I thought college was all about academics and improving student lives, not about cashā¦man, what was I thinking?
Honestly itās not a thing. Iām a UNC alum and live in NC. āStop trying to make it be a thingā as they said in Mean Girls.
NC State and UNC are rivals. No one at UNC looks at NC State as a ālittle brotherā or ālittle sisterā. I know hundreds if not thousands of alums of both schools, know faculty, staff, and even a former chancellor. āLittle brotherā is not a thing just because some hack sportswriter who doesnāt know what they are talking about uses the phrase. 12up? What the heck is that? Definitely not an ACC-focused publication. They are rivals.
As for the other article, Drake May did not say ālittle brotherā. He was just jabbing at State saying āpeople who canāt get into Carolina go to Stateā. When I was in school NC State was UNCās biggest rival (much bigger rival than Duke) and we had chants about it. We also made farmer jokes, etc. There were even āteach a young child to hate Stateā bumper stickers. Again, the writer there said ālittle brotherā. That is not a thing that a State or a UNC fan or player would say.
I would be happy to give lessons on the ACCās history to anyone who needs them. Growing up in NC when I did you were steeped in it whether you were a sports fan or not. Pretty much everybody had to pick a team even if you didnāt like sports.
I find this comment rather insulting. Just not interested in ālessons on ACC history.ā
Iāll rely on the articles, not one individual on CC with an opinion, but thank you for the lovely opportunity.
Insults, chants, jokes, razzing, teasing, claims of superiority, rivalry. . . the more you protest the more it sounds like a sibling relationship to me.
Ok, I was just trying to provide some local insight, but no skin off my nose.

Do teams in your neck of the woods not operate with āInsults, chants, jokes, razzing, teasing, claims of superiority, rivalryā. I thought that was pretty standard rivalry stuff. Lord knows UNC and Duke go at it enough and UNC and State do too.
Mike Hartās ālittle brotherā comment, made in 2007, lives in infamy. Every year, when Michigan and Michigan State play, the comment gets dredged up and I assume gives MSU additional motivation for the game. Bulletin board material every year!
I would hope Drake Maye or any player with an in-state rival, would be smart enough not to utter the same phrase, or he would also live in infamy along side Mike Hart.
I do think nationally UNC is a known name and while NC State is outstanding in its own right - it doesnāt have the national cachet - academically or athletically. Theyāve had great success - but if you ranked the ACC teams for ābrandā theyād be near the bottom. It doesnāt take away from them. Iām just talking about national presence etc.
Probably more likely that many in other states get the 2 schools confused!
Domino effect. Army to AAC (to replace SMU)?
Pac 12 is going out with a bang. All 12 teams won last weekend, even Colorado which was a 20 point underdog. Six of the 12 are ranked in the top 25.
