College Station, TX-fly into Houston or Austin?

My husband has a meeting in College Station Texas for the day and it looks like it will just be easier for him to fly into Houston or Austin and then rent a car and drive to College Station. The connecting flights and time to go directly into College Station just isn’t worth it; he would rather just rent a car and drive. He has to have a car anyway as he heads the next day to Dallas/Fort Worth. It looks like the mileage is just about the same from both Houston and Austin, so looking for those that know the area to let me know if one drive is better than another. I am guessing he will arrive at the airport between 4:00-7:00pm.

Sort of 6 of one… I tend to prefer Austin because it is easier to deal with the airport etc., but Houston might offer more return flights. If Houston, make sure it is the “big” airport and not Hobby for heading to College Station.

The drive is probably easier from Houston because of the freeways as opposed to highways, but I’d always pick Austin over Houston if given a choice. For just about anything. ;)

The drive from Austin is pretty nice. Just watch your speed near towns. Learned the hard way.

Definitely more scenic.

Depends on which has more flights and better flight fares. They are about equal
distance.

Why not Hobby? On Google Map the drive times is about the same from both Houston airports. The cheapest will be to fly into Hobby as Airtran goes there, although we might end up using miles on Delta; if so the airport will not matter.

Of course Austin is the most expensive if we do not use the miles!

George Bush is on the correct side of town – Hobby means you have to drive through Houston which has horrid traffic.

We go to College Station fairly often and either do the connections, if the fare is good enough, or fly to Houston. Austin is always a lot more expensive.

I’ve flown out of Bush, Hobby, and Bergstrom, but not commercial out of the latter. I probably wouldn’t do Austin because it’s almost certainly going to prove less flexible in terms of scheduling and more expensive relative to the Houston alternatives. During rush hour, Austin traffic can be pretty frustrating, too (although nothing like being “parked” on the Gulf Freeway for minutes at a time in Houston). I will be driving TX-21 between College Station and Austin with S on Memorial day for the State Solo and Ensemble competition, and just my opinion, but the scenic factor is overrated. :)

Yahoo maps has you taking TX-249 from the vicinity of Bush through Magnolia to catch TX-6 at Navasota. We spend “quality time” on the two-lane portions of 249 during HS football season and personally don’t care for the idea of this route very much. You can also take the beltway down to US-290 from which you catch TX-6 in Hempstead. From Hobby, you can take either the beltway or IH-610 to US-290 as above, although during rush hour, I’d avoid 610. Which of these two routes will be quicker (i.e., not shorter) will be a crapshoot depending on traffic.

Short version: I’d compare fares between Bush and Hobby and take the best deal. Enjoy College Station and be sure to say, “Howdy!”

Going from George Bush on sam houston tollway to 290 and then onto tx-6 might give fast roadways until you hit tx-6?

It’s nice scenery–for Texas.

If he’s going straight from Bergstrom the College Station, traffic shouldn’t be a problem, especially if he takes the tollroad.

While it is going to cost more, my husband has decided to fly directly into College Station as he didn’t want to drive from Houston/Austin as he has a very early morning both the day of the flight and the day after. As it is, he has to drive from College Station to Dallas the next night, so he figured he would skip the drive on this leg of the trip.

I had no idea the College Station airport was so small! I tried to see if he could fly from College Station to Dallas, but it seems the last non stop flight out is at 5:30 and the last flight with 1 stop (in Houston) is 7:15. He isn’t done with his meeting until around 6:30, so neither was a viable option. I think College Station has 10 arrivals and 10 departures a day, all on American and Continental.

I have tried to work this trip so many ways to avoid too much driving and high fares, but it just doesn’t work! To top it all off, only Hertz at the College Station airport allows car rentals to be returned at another airport, so their rates are sky high, because they can!! The only coupon code I have come up with so far is my AAA which is a compact car for around $94/day :frowning: I am still working on this, but need to finalize at least the airfare tonight; I already waited too late on the fare to College Station and it is costing me $30 more.

Wow, you are an unbelievably nice wife to worry so much about this for your husband. My contribution to my husband’s business trips consists of me wishing him to have a good trip :-).

I don’t know how nice I am  but if I want to save money, I have to do this myself. My husband would just book the first thing he saw, paying no attention to pricing! I have always been the family travel agent!

I was a stay at home mom and I am now a stay at home wife; my skills are best used searching for deals!!
