Anyone have any thoughts about these two cities in terms of quality of life, social life, cost of living, etc.?

Thanks!

College Station: Small Town with young people. Surrounded by small sleepy towns. Life revolves around Texas A&M - a big state school. Cheap cost of living. Relatively conservative and WAPSY town. Houston and Austin about 80 miles away. Hot but not humid weather.

Don’t know about Gainsville.

College Station:

Gainesville:

psych, Are you talking about living there as a grad student, or as someone working at that town’s university, or as an employed person not affiliated with that town’s univieristy?

Grad student. College Station’s relatively close to family while Gainsville is not but in a nice locale. Both programs have plus and minuses school-wise/program-wise, so I may end up taking location into account (assuming I don’t go elsewhere–I still have several programs to hear back from, post-interview).

Gainesville is a GREAT town for young adults. Was there as a grad student. Loved it. 2 hrs from the beach, Disney and other distractions, LOL. Affordable housing and flat roads–easy for running or biking.

College Station is about 30 miles from the home of Blue Bell Ice Cream.

Gainesville was the home of the Rudy and Roger Maris Budweiser Distributorship.

Budweiser and Ice Cream don’t go together very well.

Do they make beer-flavored ice cream?

Only accidentially when the ice cream guy spills his beer at work.

jym, what program? (Feel free to PM).

Been to college station twice - hated it. Ugly, flat, shaky town - just an ugly drab drag with, ugly parking lots and stores. One nice little historic area, but miles away from campus. (Plus don’t like the homophobia…) Been to Gainesville once - MUCH, much, much nicer physical environment! See, I really have strong feelings about this! ;)

From my perspective, this is the only redeeming quality of College Station, but I am a UT-Austin graduate, so I can’t imagine living there after having experienced Austin.

psych

Sent you a PM. Go to FL!!! (quick sidenote – there is an “E” in Gainesville). Great college/grad school town!! Have a blast!

If you are doing a grad program in psych, you might find the experience of living in College Station more validating of the need for your healing art.
