College suggestions, please?

Currently looking at University of Alabama and Suffolk University (MA) but I’d like to find out about more colleges.

International student

Want to major in computer science, but still get a general education

Taking IB diploma (but don’t want to miss out on general ed/elective opportunities due to IB credits)

Aiming for 33-34 ACT

Would be interested in undergraduate research programs or CPT/OPT

Needs to be affordable (Could pay around $10,000 for the EFC. Not from a low-income family, so please count only merit aid)

Few ECs (volunteering, programming, creative writing, self-study, and beginning keyboard… they’re more hobbies than ECs) so less competitive schools would be appreciated

Good STEM colleges would be appreciated. Thank you :)

Bump to first page?

Or just average but affordable colleges?

Try a college finder. There’s one on College Board https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-search</a> and another one on this site [College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential - College Admissions, Search, and Financial Aid Help from College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/college_search/) .

Good luck!

I don’t see why a student who anticipates an ACT of 33-34 is looking at Suffolk. They have a really low 4-yr graduation rate (37%), and the place is not a bargain given its low quality. If you want to be in the Boston area, there are probably better choices for you.

What is CPT/OPT?

I would advise universities in Texas. For example: University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M or University of Houston. Really good universities for international students with good engineering colleges.

Thank you for the help and sorry for the late reply.

I have added University of Nebraska - Lincoln to my list due to the IB scholarship and the housing scholarship for CS/business majors/minors.

I also have Susquehanna University ¶ on my list, but it shows a low chance on Cappex. I don’t know why, looking at the graph. Maybe because I have no leadership ECs.

CPT and OPT are curricular/optional practical training and it’s a type of internship for international students. I’d really like to experience working in the USA in a field relating to my major while in college.

I would like to study in Boston, but I can’t find many colleges that would offer enough financial aid… even if I spend a year after high school working (if I could find a job) before applying to college.

I’ll look into Texas colleges, thank you. :)

Are you sure about that ACT ? getting 33-34 is no joke and it means only missing a few questions…What is your TOEFL score ? If you need financial aid, then that changes the whole situation…apply to need blind colleges like amherst, princeton, yale, dartmouth, cornell, georgetown etc…

Thanks for the advice, XtremePower. :)

I’ve been getting 32s in ACT practices (including my first ACT) so if I improve math, I hope to get a 33 or 34. (Got 36 on the last reading prep I did… science and English generally around 34, math hovers between 29-30 so that’s what I need to focus on. If only the geometry was replaced with calculus… xD) Of course, I don’t count on getting a 33-34, but since I’m going to take it in June, hopefully I will be able to prepare a lot. :)

I don’t need TOEFL because English is my first language.

My parents earn too much for need aid to enable me to go to college in the USA. I tried Brown’s calculator, and it came up with a contribution of $30,000, which would be impossible for me to earn in scholarships/wages. So pretty much, even if I was lucky enough to get into Princeton, Dartmouth, wherever, there would be no way I could afford to go.
Sorry about the negativity…
(I feel so embarrassed writing this…)

I’m looking into international external scholarships, and most of them are about literature essays, my weakest subject. But I guess I’ll try anyway, you never know.

Bump…?

I looked at the merit aid college lists a while ago, but I’ll look through again to see if I could add any colleges to the list. But if anyone knows any colleges where other international students study with a full ride or almost full ride, I’d appreciate knowing that. :)

Texas A&M looks good from what I’ve seen so far. I’ll read about its majors soon. University of Texas at Austin doesn’t seem to offer many scholarships to international students, but I’ll look more closely at its website. I don’t have assets of $28,600 for the University of Houston, and they don’t seem to offer full ride/tuition scholarships to international students, but thank you anyway for the recommendation.
