Check out the Lenox. It’s close to public transportation, NEC, Northeastern, Berklee, BU, and shopping. I really like it. Reminds me of the Belvedere in NYC… very nicely restored classic hotel, with a prime location and wonderful staff.

Lenox is just what I was going to suggest. If it is booked, we had a more than pleasant room at Courtyard by Marriott Boston Copley Square last time we were at Berklee Jazz Festival - it is very different from typical Courtyard being a restored older building. Great location at 88 Exeter Street.

The Hotel at MIT is really cool (they have lunar landing gadgets in the lobby), but maybe more than what you wish to spend. Obviously, next door to the tech campus, but a block to the subway and a couple of stops down from H.

Also, if you have time, check out the MIT tech museum…my Son, a history major, had a great time with the exhibits…we were there on Sunday so admission was free.

The Collonade Hotel and the Midtown Hotel are pretty good (Midtown is reasonably priced). They are both is on the green line (subway line) and near Northeastern, Berklee, New England Conservatory, the Museum of Fine Arts. The subway line will also take you to Boston U, Emerson, MIT, Harvard Square, and anywhere else you want to go.

You may want to check out the B&Bs in Boston, in particular, the Newbury Guest House www.newburyguesthouse.com. Just do a google search under Boston B&B.

What colleges do you hope to see? When we looked at BC, BU, Tufts, and Brandeis, I wanted a hotel on the outskirts of the city since three of the four are suburban. We stayed at the Doubletree Suites on Soldiers Field Road and were able to use public transportation to all schools; the walk to the T was maybe 10-15 minutes through what we thought was a cool neighborhood. There’s a taxi stand at the hotel and we did use a cab to get to one school - it was reasonable enough.

I’d recommend this hotel, especially for a larger party - the suites are spacious and convenient, and the hotel was well-kept. We were able to get a decent rate - maybe $130/night, but the 3rd night was free.

For a different experience, and if you are Quaker or of that leaning, the Beacon Hill Friends House is in a wonderful location. I lived there one summer and they have a couple of guest rooms. It is a wonderful place but I think it would be wise to be acquainted with the Society of Friends in some way…http://www.bhfh.org/

I second the Doubletree Suites on Soldier Field Road – we’ve stayed there many times while visiting son in Cambridge/Somerville. In nice weather, it’s very easy to walk to Harvard Square. Another good hotel but more $ is Hotel Commonwealth on Commonwealth Avenue near BU.
It’s right next to the T stop. Also beware that hotel prices are probably higher for Patriot’s Day and the Boston Marathon which I believe is April 17. Boston is very crowded that weekend and you also need to book hotel rooms way in advance. Good luck.

Some schools have special discount rates set up with hotels for parents touring schools in the area… So you may to call the schools that you want to see to find out which hotels have the special rates.

Several years ago, we stayed at the Inn at Harvard Square and it was great. Perfect location in Cambridge, great service, and a nice restaurant. It’s not a budget-priced hotel but I find that you can get good rates at most hotels these days if you book online.

It really depends upon what schools you want to see and how tight your budget is. Most of the suggestions are right in Boston or Cambridge and could be a bit more pricey. Another option is just outside Boston, the Holiday Inn in Newton. It is right next to the Riverside Green Line in to Boston. That can get you to BC, BU and back out on the E line to Northeastern.

You can also get to the Cambridge side pretty easily it is just a longer commute. A few great schools that are not serviced by the MBTA subway system are Tufts and Brandeis. Brandeis is only 2-3 miles from the Holiday Inn and Tufts is not far from Harvard Square.

Another option is to stay close to the Red Line in eaither Braintree or Quincy. Regardless, good luck on your trip.

NEC has an arrangement with the Back Bay Hilton which offers a substantial break on the room rates. The hotel is lovely and extremely conveniently located. I’d check the websites of all of the schools you’re visiting to see if they have a relationship with nearby hotels that discount for college visitors.
