What is the better choice for transporting and storing clothing, etc. when moving your son/daughter into their dorm? Do most students prefer trunks?

I think college trunks are a thing of the past and all the kids now use the clear plastic under bed bins.

I’ve never seen a trunk in a dorm.

Much as I deplore the use of plastic environmentally, most college dorm rooms aren’t big enough for storage containers that don’t go under the bed. My son used his storage container from sleep-away camp, so at least we didn’t need to buy additional plastic. He used it all 4 years and brought it back home again

Great, Thanks!! I just bought 4 covered, plastic bins with wheels today, that will fit nicely under a twin bed.

Sounds like you have already purchased, but we found some nice fabric-type boxs (with lids) at Ikea that fit under the bed for D1’s dorm room. And they looked nicer than the plastic ones when they were out.

I had bought trunks for D2 & D3 for summer camp. D2 took hers freshman year and it barely fit under the bed with risers; D3’s never left the house. Both trunks adorn storage spaces in our house … go with the plastic bins!

I sent my daughter with large plastic drawers that fit under the bed. I thought they would be more convenient than a bin with a snap-off lid that had to be pulled all the way out from under the bed to access the contents.

I taped them shut with packing tape for move-in.

If your kids bring as much as mine do, then both. :)

Some advantages to a trunk if there is enough space in the room:
It can be used as a coffee table.
You can lock valuables in it.

My DS has a trunk but only because we already had it–didn’t buy it special for college. Freshman year he took a lock so he could lock up his computer while he was off on the pre-frosh trip. Took it this year again because he could pack a bunch of stuff in it and store lots for under the bed at school. It works for him, but we wouldn’t have purchased it just for college.

My advice is for wheels! Don’t buy too cheap a product. And they have life after college! Great for storing all the papers, books and other stuff up in the attic.
