College Unranked

I read College Unranked by Lloyd Thacker (Korean translated version) and quite shocked

about the ways U.S universities manipulate statistic and cheat on students.

And it was interesting that U.S.A is going through the same problem Korea has, college

obsession. Nowadays, it is harder to be successful without pestigious college degree, isn’t it

(In Korea, if you can’t go to 10 in-Seoul university + KAIST + Postech, you are a LOSER.

And these losers are forced to study 1,2,3 even 4 more years just to enter good college,

so funny and sad.)

Hew, it is sad that college education today is just a well-packaged product, and a place to

earn a degree for higher wage, all around the world.

But I still need it…better to be well-known college since I don’t have a special dream that

can let me ignore the social pressures and do what I want.

Current mission is to get high GPA, find interesting ECs and transfer to good one.

UCLA - Oh! UCB - Wow!! IVY - pls f**k and marry me!!! other UCs - sigh

in ma homeland.

Anyone who knows good books about college admission info (essay samples, transfer info,

recommendable ECs and etc) pls let me know.

I totally agree with the author but am not brave enough to ignore social pressure…what

a prestige whore.

"UCLA - Oh! UCB - Wow!! IVY - pls f**k and marry me!!! other UCs - sigh

in ma homeland."

Is that a good sigh or a bad sigh lol? As for prestige whores—there are many of those here so you’re in good company. I personally prefer UCs over Ivy league because they are less expensive (maybe not for international students though) plus they are in California where the weather is great year round. I’m not sure how to interpret the sigh about other UCs (good or bad?) but most of the people who post in the UC transfer thread have been accepted to the UC schools including UCB and UCLA. You can spend hours looking at all of the threads in this forum and get samples of essays, appeal letters, GPA, extra curricular activities (important for UC) and other information from people who were accepted to UCs and even Ivy League schools.

Good luck.

If you think UC’s are a disappointingly packaged business deal, take a look at all the for-profit institutions that have popped up over the last decade. Personally, I think these places compound the problem of the devalued undergrad degree (while charging more for it). But, whatever… MBA is the new BA.
