college with good Music+Literature(writing)+Art

Hi I’m a student who wants to study music, literature and art in college.
it’s just that i want to be a singersongwriter but also have passion for literature and arts.
can you recommend any schools that have good programs for all three parts?
and additionally, it would be perfect if the campus is beautiful and is in the area in touch with nature

You can try (online) articles such as “The 25 Most Literary Colleges in America,” Flavowire and “The 25 Most Beautiful College Campuses in America,” Thrillist. For creative writing in particular, these articles discuss further schools: “The 10 Best American Colleges for Writers” (USA Today), “The 10 Best Colleges for Creative Writers,” (The Freelancer) and “The 12 Best Creative Writing Programs and Colleges.” The music and studio art programs at some of these colleges will also be excellent.

Bard? Vassar? Hamilton?
Eckerd for writing and nature. St Olaf for art, music, nature, not bad for English. Knox for nature and English.

I was also going to suggest Bard.

Knox is great for nature, English, and also both fine and performing art (especially with their new fine arts building opening in the Fall). Vassar is a good suggestion.

I would be cautious of Bard because competition is fierce for art, music, and English and often kids aren’t able to get into those classes or concentrations (their word for major).

Does location matter?

Take a look at Skidmore and Wesleyan, too.

Lawrence in Wisconsin would be a good safety school. Vassar is grew for nature . Over a thousand acre campus and lots of hiking awesome vistas Catskill mountains nearby running trails and more

Nature, as it’s often used, can be “wild” nature or “farm” nature, or just plain trees. Which of these aspects most appeals to you may be something you will wish to consider.

Are you looking for a university or a liberal arts school? Many universities (Vanderbilt, Northwestern, BU, et al) have distinct schools of music of great repute, as do several liberal arts schools (Bard, Lawrence, Oberlin…), but internal music BA programs can be quite different from the conservatory-style programs at these schools. It can also be difficult to apply as a music major (BA) to schools that offer a BM.

@amtc From what I’ve heard and experienced, musical competition at Bard is mainly within the conservatory, which is only ~90 students and insanely hard to get into. I have a couple of friends pursuing BA’s in music there and it seems much more laid back; they can study with the same teachers as the conservatory students, but there are separate orchestra and chamber music programs for the college.

@theoriginalclone is accurate in the description of the Music department. Music is not hard to participate in at the college (as opposed to conservatory) - although the vocal track is audition based and not everyone is accepted - but the person I knew to whom that happened, just majored in musicology, took singing lessons and classes, and sang in the choruses (and still does.) The majority of the composition professors are the same for the college and conservatory music program. There are all styles of music in the college - from Rock & Contemporary to Jazz to Electronic to World Music to Early Music… Slightly different music theory track - and the private lessons are with different teachers - but still wonderful ones. Bard certainly fits your interests. @amtc is always concerned about Moderation at Bard and that not every student is accepted into their major of choice. It’s true that this can happen in the art, photography, theater, film, & writing concentrations, as they’re more audition based. But it’s not like students don’t have other options for majors.

As a general rule, BA programs in music are more academic than performance-based, and thus less competitive than BM programs, most of which require an audition.

Also, if you’re looking for a university with a strong music department, great humanities, and a verdant (though not rural) campus, you can’t go wrong with Brown

I am always concerned with people’s impressions of Bard prior to their really looking at it because it’s thought of as a loose, intellectual, do-your-own-thing kind of school and it is very far from that. Our experience is that it is quite the pressure cooker, especially if your child is easily stressed or non-competitive. Unless things have changed, you begin Freshman year early with an English program (two weeks maybe?) and during mid-year break you take a Science program. It also helps if you know what areas you’d like to major in so that you can begin formulating your presentation for the end of Sophomore year in hopes of being accepted into your desired major. If you are rejected from your desired major you can either switch majors to something available or transfer. My daughter would spend her first two years in panic mode, fearing rejection from her major and needing to start all over, in many respects, with a new major.

It works for some kids and for some majors but it is not what many people think of when they think of Bard and I think it’s important to know that in advance. As a matter of fact, after our disastrous admitted student day (where Bard went from my daughter’s top choice to off the list totally), I wrote such a scathing report that the head of Admissions called me to discuss my thoughts and they have changed much of how they present themselves to new, potential students right from the start.
