college

Are you allowed to apply to more than one college within a university. For example, can I apply to the college of arts and sciences as well as the school of engineering within the University of Virginia? or am i allowed only one choice?
Thanks

Only one. My son applied to engineering school and was accepted ED. Just a hint: if you are interested at all in engineering, that school is much easier to get into than A&S at UVA. I believe they offer admission to around 40% of the applicants to the engineering school. They are trying to grow the school a little bit.

thanks for the hint. I’m thinking of engineering, but how much will it hurt that i’m taking calculus AB next year and not BC? (I only got a B in precalc so i’m playing it safe and taking AB).
Also is it true that you don’t have to take a language or English at the engineering school?

If you are allowed only one choice (it is that way at my S’s school), you should research which colleges are the hardest/easiest to get into. At my S’s StateU. engineering and design are the very hardest to get into but a liberal arts major is much easier. The admissions people told us to make sure you did not apply to the easiest college just to gain entrance to the Univ. with the idea of switching later because it may not be that easy to do.

Benjamin4, we cross posted. My S only took Calc.AB in h.s and was admitted to the engineering school with no problem. If the rest of your grades and scores are good it shouldn’t matter. Engineering requires Calc1,2, and 3 in college. Since he took AB, he skipped Calc.1 and went to Calc.2. At his school (in NC) science and engineering majors are not required to take foreign language if they took at least 2 years in h.s. They were required to take the freshman Eng. class. Your school could have different requirements though.

I don’t think it matters at UVA, my son has to take a calculus placement test online this summer to see which calculus he will be in at UVA, and he took both AB and BC, so it’d pretty evident that there are students that have maybe not even taken calculus at all in HS. One scary thought is that the engineering school doesn’t allow calculators to be used in any of their math classes. My S is really worried about that. I believe there is a foregn language requirement at UVA in all schools, not sure about English. You can check easily enough on the UVA website, or go to the UVA forum on this website

At CMU you are allowed to apply to many diff schools though some like the College of Fine Arts have their own requirements such as an audition.
