Colleges and universities in the South with no or minimal greek presence

Are there any good, non-religious schools in the US South, other than Rice, that have little or no greek life? My son has found many amazing liberal arts colleges in the West, Midwest, and Northeast that meet this criteria. We have family in the South though so he was looking for matching schools in that region. Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and Emory have the kind of academics he wants (chem major) but he said he didn’t like the frat-heavy vibe he got. He might still apply to GA Tech if his uncles and cousins push him enough. I was just curious as to whether there were any little gems we might be missing.

Eckerd and New College both of Florida are LACs without Greek presence. Hendrix in Arkansas is another LAC with no Greek life.

@Otterma The College Board allows you to search for schools that meet your desired criteria. A selecting of South and No Greek Life pulls up over 400 choices.

@saffysmum Dang! I had never noticed the Greek option there before. DS isn’t an athlete so I guess I never bothered to expand the “Sports and Activities” tab. Thanks so much.

@Otterma You’re welcome  It is such a handy search tool, there are a multitude of colleges and universities that one would never, ever know about because they aren’t Big Name.

Hendrix is certainly a non-greek gem of a southern LAC.

Guilford College in NC.

Trinity University is second “ranked” school in Texas, and has a minimal Greek presence. As a bonus, they are very strong in DIII sports if your S wants to play in College.

Good luck!

Typically the Jesuit Colleges don’t have Greek Life so maybe Loyola-New Orleans or (not really southern) Gtown.
You can also try the CC SuperMatch function on the left (under Find A College).

Keep your eye on GT application dates . . . early action was 10/15, and I think that was the deadline for scholarship consideration (double-check me). Regular decision is 1/10.

I didn’t realize that the Greek vibe was big at GT (??). We haven’t visited yet though.

GT must have changed a whole lot since DH’s and my day.

“Typically the Jesuit Colleges don’t have Greek Life”

This is a myth. Loyola New Orleans has Greek life, as do many of its Jesuit peers (Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, Saint Louis U, Marquette, etc.).

@SouthFloridaMom9 - I didn’t think GT was very Greek at all but he really wants a liberal arts college, so that’s why Tech didn’t make the cut. He liked the school a lot though (how can you not be charmed by The Varsity) and it’s one of several he’s put on the “revisit for grad school” list.

Schools w large Greek presences often have EVEN LARGER non-Greek presences. Son could be limiting his options w a criterion that isn’t a big deal.

GMTplus7 is right. There are many schools in the south with Greek life, but it is very easy to avoid and the Greek presence is not a big deal if you do not want it. My daughter has zero interest in Greek life. She is at a southern school that is 17% Greek and has no problem avoiding it. It is all off campus.

Percentage of students in fraternities and sororities can often be found in the college’s common data set or on http://www.collegedata.com . For example:

UNC - Asheville: 3% of women in sororities and 3% of men in fraternities

Washington and Lee: 81% of women in sororities and 77% of men in fraternities
