Colleges for 3.5 Student?

hey you all 3.8~3.9~4.0 smart college confidential people

everytime I come here and look at the threads, I feel like I have done nothing in life hahahahaha

you all make me look like a fool

anyways, I’m a rising senior and I’m having trouble making my college lists

Here is my basic stats:

GPA u/w around 3.5 (I did not calculate it to be exact, but around that)
SAT I: 2140 (CR:620, M:800 W:720) 1st try

SAT II’s and E/C, I’m not done yet, so I will not mention

so…
can you guys please recommend some colleges for the miserable 3.5 kid?
I have no idea where to send in my application

so far, this is my college list

College of William and Mary
George Mason University
James Madison University
New York University
Seattle University
U Michigan (Ann Arbor)
U Nevada Las Vegas
U Washington
Virginia Commnwlth University
Virginia Tech

I’m planning to add 2 or 3 more colleges up there

is that list reasonable for my college list? please gimme some tips !!

p/s*: I don’t even know the meaning of the terms…such as reach, low reach, high reach, safety…
can you guys teach me on that too? what those means…and stuff? thx alot~

A reach is a school you’re probably less than 50% to get in. High reach would be your odds aren’t that good but it isn’t impossible, low reach would be your odds aren’t great but they’re ok, match would mean you’re pretty close to the average student at a school (not guarenteed to get in, but its a good shot) and safety is a school that you’re almost 100% sure to get in.

What is your major and what are you looking for in a college? Big city? Big school? Small school? etc.

I’ll go ahead and say you’ve got a good shot at getting into Virginia Tech, but I’ll withold recommending it until you tell us what you want from a college.

Ill reccommend a few:

NC State (safety)

South Carolina (safety)

George Whington University (Match)

American University (Safety)

University of Miami (match)

Penn State (Match)

Columbia (reach)

Michigan (reach)

Virginia (reach)

North Carolina (reach)

William and Mary is probably a reach. Seattle University is probably a low match/safety, UMich and VaTech are matches. You can kind of go by the range of SAT scores at the school, compared with your SAT scores. Then, you have to look at whether your grades match your SAT scores. In your case, they do a little bit. Your math SAT is very high so if you made A’s in math that would match. Your reading is on the low side for W&M, but fits the range at UMich. If you made B’s in English then that matches, and tells admissions officers that your school has reasonably challenging English classes.

i got into michigan with a 3.5 and a 2140 LOL

I had the same SAT score and a little higher GPA (3.65), and I was told on here I was in for U of Washington. Ricegal, does it look bad if your SAT subscores don’t match your grades? My lowest score was for math and I have a 4.0 average in math, but my highest score was reading, and I’ve gotten C+'s and B-'s in core English classes.

wow, Thanxs alot~

A few southern schools:

Vanerbilt, Wake Forest, Rhodes,…there are tons of LACs that are very good and that aren’t well known that don’t require a 4.5 2300 to get in

I think George Whington University is a reach for you, sorry.

What state are you from? You’ll easily get into any public university in your state, and you could get merit aid too. And most of the LACs will accept you too, other than the very top notch ones. A 3.5 GPA really isn’t bad, especially since comparing between schools is so difficult. You still have time for another try at the SAT, so go for it. Then the adcoms will overlook your GPA.

I’m from Virginia, but I kinda want to go out of state, live away from home

you should definately get into george mason. jmu’s probably a good match

But in-state for UVA with those numbers you’re in! UVA has better/similar level programs to NYU/UMich but with a much smaller price tag for you.

And UVA > VA Tech or VCU.

Go to UVA! Its cheap in-state and with your stats you’ll get in there. It’s a great school with one of the most beautiful campuses. It would be almost wasteful to spend more money to go to Michigan or NYU or anywhere else.

I knew someone with a 3.5 GPA and 1400 SAT who got into Stanford, but he was also dirt poor…raised in a single parent household…and part URM…so how come ur GPA is so low??

i think you will get into SU. i would say that UW is a match for you. the average gpa there is 3.6-3.7ish and they prefer in-state kids, so that might hurt you.

There’s no guarantee of getting in to UVA at ALL, but you have an ok chance.
The campus is great, but the VT campus is better, and I’m not kidding haha.

hey your SAT score is really good you will definately be in at JMU, George Mason, and Virginia Tech. UVA places a lot of weight on academics but if your EC’s are good enough then you’re in.

thanx alot !!
