Hi everyone,
I’m tutoring some students on the (new) SAT as well as the college process. They are all predominantly low-income students (qualify for reduced price or free lunch). The group that I’m assigned received SAT scores in this range (1200-1400) for their ‘diagnostic’; however, they could (and should, hopefully) rise.
Unfortunately, because I’m an international student, and coming here for me was moot unless I attended a T10 (which were the only ones that would give me significant FA), I don’t have a good sense for what are financial and admissions safeties/matches/reaches for domestic students with scores within this range.
I was hoping that CC-ers had suggestions for some good example schools to talk about in this range, which also provide good FA. If I could have a few examples of a urban, suburban, and rural environment, research unis vs LACs, it would be great, too. They are NY/NYC residents, so I’m definitely looking @ the CUNYs, and SUNYS.

What’s the score range?
ETA: Oh just retread the title. Are those scores on the new SAT scale?
I don’t know the CUNYs well, but I think of the SUNYs Bing and Stony Brook would be matches/reaches and Geneseo and Buffalo would be matches, Buffalo as a low match or safety for some students. That’s for admissions - financial aid at the publics might be tough for low income students. Some other SUNYs might be financial safeties considering merit aid.
For students towards the top of the range, some LACs that meet or nearly meet need could be good reaches with affordable aid - Conn, Dickinson, Skidmore, Trinity, Mt. Holyoke, Lafayette, etc. Given that transportation costs could be an issue here, it probably makes sense to stick to the Northeast. Clark U would be more of a match that still has good FA, and has more low income students - they have a focus on community service and diversity.
