Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

holliesue: hope your dad’s surgery went well today (and that your drive was not too treacherous).

proudwismom: sorry about your son but at least you have time to revise his college list based on his needs.

Unfortunately, I am not stuck in FL. Looks like DD and I will be headed home tomorrow, which was the original plan. On the bright side, I am coming back with DS next month :)

thanks everyone, my dad’s surgery went very well! and the drive also went well!

Thanks for the update, Holliesue. I’m glad that things went well today.

thanks for letting us know, hollisue, and best wishes for a rapid recovery for your dad.

proudwismom - good luck with your son’s health - it sounds smart to keep him fairly close to home under the circumstances.

holliesue - glad things went well with your Dad,

Susquehanna University - I found another contact - a Maryland family (Jewish mom, Christian father) with a very happy son at Susquehanna. I am trying to make contact and get some more details - but I am happy to have found another contact besides poor Yabeyabe - I can make someone else crazy with all of my questions!

I’m glad your dad’s surgery went well holliesue.

I wish we were in Florida Linymom. We are supposed to get more snow tonight and into tomorrow. I’ve lived in Wisconsin my whole life and am used to the snow but I’m ready for it to be gone now.

Thanks again for all the good wishes.

Holliesue - so glad things worked out for your dad.

proudwismom - best wishes for your son. I have some friends where chronic illness and proximity to doctors is very much driving their college search. I hope you can find some places with good fit both ways.

CCC: Our temperatures have been running in the 30’s to 40’s

Levirm: A snow shoveling bonding experience sounds lovely! Also, thanks for the shot information!

Hollisue: I’m so glad that things went well, I wish your dad a quick recovery.

Proudwisdom: I’m sorry to hear about your S’s illness. S1 has a friend who has an autoimmune disease that exacerbated while quite far away at school. It was difficult. He ended up leaving school and moving home and is going to a school that is an easy drive from home. He is now feeling well and is happy with the decision to stay close to home. Good Luck.

Glad everything went well for your dad, Holliesue.

Hope things go well for your son, Proudwisdom.

Saw Race to Nowhere last night. It was very interesting. A few specifics that left an impression on me were: Although it takes a 3.8-4.0 to be admitted to U California, approx 50% of incoming freshman need remedial help to get them up to freshman level expectations in math and I don’t remember which other courses…the point being the amount of cheating going on in high schools for kids to achieve the high gpas they feel they need.

Also, correlations between homework and success in the classroom…little to none in elementary school, some in middle school (which goes away after approx 1 hour of homework/evening), and more in high school (which also goes away after approx 2 hours of homework/evening). An AP Bio teacher said that the first thing he did when taking over that class was to cut the amount of homework in class…AP scores went up.

The countries that consistently do better than the US give much less homework that our schools. And finally, in Singapore the top 20% of high school students are given a full ride and stipend to go into teaching, thereby securing the high quality of professional educators.

I’m really trying to resolve my “nagaholic” ways (to quote Rockvillemom). When I came home from the movie last night around 9, and checked in on my freshman (who’se been so stressed out over exams next week) to find him playing a computer game online w/ a friend instead of studying (telling me that he couldn’t study any more that night), I just said “ok” instead of grilling him on what he got done. It turns out that a mom and librarian who I know from school went to collage w/ the couple whose 13yo committed suicide and who the movie was dedicated to…so sad.

umich8790 - Thanks for posting your thoughts on the movie. I haven’t seen it yet. I do agree that there is way too much homework.

I have seen the difference in good quality homework and homework for the sake of homework. When D1 was in 5th grade she had the best teacher, her homework expanded on the lessons in class, etc. When D2 was in 5th grade, her teacher gave out meaningless worksheet after worksheet. Nothing of value, just busy work.

I also think that there needs to be more coordination between teachers. Especially when the kids hit middle and high school. When they are taking so many hard classes to have major exams and papers due on the same day is just crazy.

But, on the other hand, I bought my house specifically for the high performing HS my kids now attend. As most parents, I want the best for my kids, including the best HS. It is an incredibly intense HS school, with very, very bright kids.

BTW, I have tried not to nag D1 so much. She did pull out one of her grades, the one I was most worried about. Still waiting for final class assignments/tests to post on edline which will determine A or B for some of her classes this quarter. I don’t know how she stands the stress, but I think it gives her some kind of thrill to pull it out in the end.

Was wondering if anyone has any insight about Quinnipiac for the Jewish B. Don’t think it’s been mentioned on this thread, but it seems like a school worth exploring.

I live near Quinnipiac, and yes, it’s a great school for certain programs (some of the health related fields and communication especially). Not sure how active their Hillel is. They’re known locally as a party school, fwiw.

Quinnipiac has highly respected programs in medical related fields - physical therapy, respiratory therapy and similar. The location is lovely and convenient to the New Haven fun. Not considered particularly academic school. Not sure on the Jewish issues, though there are quite a few Jewish kids.

thought that everyone who is considering Va publics for next year should see this:

[Va. legislator seeks limiting out-of-state college students - wtop.com](http://www.wtopnews.com/?sid=2233098&nid=316)

we know alot of students at Quinnipiac; mostly “C” students (with some “B” students spattered in there)…they are all very happy there both Jewish and non-Jewish…nice campus…ditto kudos to the PT programs as well as communications…very heavily populated with NY/NJ suburb kids; didn’t see much diversity by way of race/religion/style when we were there…

^ Also, Springfield College and Adelphi University. When D1 and I looked at Springfield, I was very impressed with what I saw. The kids in the admissions office all seemed like my own kid. They even have special homemade waffles in the dining center with the college logo on them!

Sussquehana remains my favorite of all the schools I looked at with her. Just a warm community.

In the south, UTampa also had a nice feeling to it and seemed very interested in B students.

More on Susquehanna - just spoke with a new acquaintance in Maryland whose son is a junior business major at SU. She raves about this school! Her son is happy with his classes and the level of personal attention he gets from professors. He plays lots of sports and is also going abroad to London in the spring. He has not been active in Hillel but knows it is there and has not experienced any difficulties in being Jewish on this campus.

Her only negative was the pricetag - I think it is around $42,000 COA - but a B+ student should be able to get some merit money.

So, I am happy to keep this one on the list.

One of my best friends here at Clemson is Jewish. She is involved in Hillel and Clemson gave her exemption on major Jewish holidays so she could go to temple and such. She also got close with one of her Professors, who is also Jewish, and would celebrate holidays with his family and a few other students. Clemson is a great school for a B student (like myself!) and I have found that even though it’s a very southern school, people are really accepting. I am originally from New York and was worried about not being Southern as well. Best of luck!

Laura, thanks for your gracious post! Go Tigers!

Laura9 - thank you - nothing better than hearing the perspective of a current student.

Yabeyabe - thought you were on a cruise? Are you sitting on the deck - pina colada in hand - posting on CC?

Yabeyabe-if that is the case, it is time to seek help. Repeat after me:“My name is Yabeyabe and I’m a CC addict.”
