Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

^^haha; yea we’re here…

yes, there are many schools where the ACT can subsititute for SAT+SATII’s…one just needs to check each school on their list to make sure that substitute is allowable…

Deborah: do you have a junior in HS? or younger?

I sure don’t, rodney. My daughter is off at college in another state now. Sniff, sniff.

aww…well I’ll be in your shoes soon enough; last one will be out in the fall…

This is an article about the David Project, which promotes Israel advocacy on campus. The training referenced in the article took place over this past weekend:
[The Jewish Chronicle - Over 70 students converge in Pittsburgh for Israel advocacy weekend](http://thejewishchronicle.net/view/full_story/11268255/article-Over-70-students-converge-in-Pittsburgh-for-Israel-advocacy-weekend-?instance=home_news_metro_right)

SAT II’s
My son is a sophmore. We are planning on having him take Math 2 and Chemistry SAT 2 tests this fall. He has started to study for Math 2, but not chemistry yet. The thought process is:

  1. I don’t know if he is a B or A- student yet. Freshman year he was 3.3 unweighted, first semester sophmore year all A’s and one B with harder classes and all A’s on Mid-terms.
  2. Scored well on PSAT’s (205 no prep, no accomodations, will be getting time 1/2 for future test) and did not as well on practice ACT
  3. Doing Project Lead the Way and will probably major in Engineering - I think more of these programs want a math and sceince SAT 11
  4. Plans to take 2 years of AP Physics junior and senior year, so couldn’t take Physics SAT 11 junior year.
  5. CMU is a reach and guidance says if trend continues he has a shoot and they have great Asperger’s support.
He is currently taking Chemistry GT and Precalculus GT. We are all over the place with son because I have no idea what the next year and 1/2 will bring. He is self studying Latin 2 this summer and will take American history at the CC to fit more room in his schedule. He works harder when he is more challenged and wants to reach as high as possible with schools, but I worry that the Asperger’s will out weigh everything else. Time will tell.

Mom24boys, you have a potential National Merit Finalist on your hands if he scored a 205 on the PSAT sophomore year. I would definitely get a PSAT prep book or two and have him do 10 minutes of prep a day, starting around July or August and continuing until the PSAT is given in October. It is worth this effort to get that credential on his record.
I agree with CMU! You can also take a look at Worcester Polytech in Massachusetts for more of a match; I think there is good support for Asperger’s there.

Levirm, I will get him some prep test books when he gets through this years testing, 1 AP and 2 SAT’ IIs. I think he could be a NMF in another state, but not sure he can do it in Maryland. Worchester is a good idea, I didn’t know about the Asperger’s support. I saw him at Rose-Hulman until I found out they have a total of 20-30 Jewish students. I guess that’s a case where the boy girl ratio is a good thing - very few boys will be meeting their future wives.
Everything is robotics right now, I barely see him, but the robotic gets mailed in at the end of this month.

Mom24: It sounds like your son is doing very well and will have good choices. In terms of the SAT II, I recommend having him take the Math II this May or June, right after he takes pre-calc. Most strong math students do well on this test. The Chem SAT II might be tough if he isn’t taking AP chem. If he doesn’t score well on the practice tests, it might be better to wait and take the Physics after 1 year of AP physics. He will probably still need to self study some of the Physics.

It sounds like you should make the round of the Techie schools. Case Western would be another good one to consider. I don’t know much about Asperger’s services there. There are some good Asperger’s threads that might help.

RVM:

Nice national article in today’s newspaper sports section re: the baseball coach of Wake Forest donating a kidney to a student baseball player! Did you know about it? Nice story!

mom24boys:

My S2 is currently a h.s. school freshman. He is also very much into Robotics/engineering as is Kathiep’s S. Right now his unweighted GPA as a freshman is 3.2, similar to your S with 3.3 as a freshman. We will definitely look into WPI and RPI for him in the next few years. We actually looked at CMU for my older son, but my younger son will not have the overall grades to get into CMU. The little that I know of CMU is that they work the students very hard there, lots of homework…so if your S can wrap himself around that he would do well there. I know someone currently at WPI who is not an asperger student, but needed certain attention and loves it there. Btw: If not NMF, then probably commended.

Momjr: Thanks he is doing very well and he has come from so far down. At 5 a social worker at Jewish Social Services said we should institutionalize him and forget about him and be thankful for our other son (we only had 2 at the time.) By 3rd grade he was expelled from public school. In 8th grade, private special ed school, they did a career evaluation and said if he worked really hard he might get a job someday mowing lawns. He returned to public school in 9th grade and ever quarter does better and better. We have had some real highs and lows. The Asperger’s threads have great info, but they scare me esp, since the kids all seemed to have less issues as children and very few are succeeding in college. I know all the statistics, but so far he has made a lifetime out of proving people wrong. I expect a bumpy road, but I am in a hopeful stage at this moment.
Case Western may work but its a bit far. At the moment he wants to go as far away as possible (California), I want him within a 4-6 hr drive in case of emergencies or at least a quick direct flight.
We’ll do one practice test on the chemistry and if its bad I guess we can try physics. If he took GT Physics it would have been 1 year and he would be prepared by end of junior year. Since AP is spread over 2 years, I wonder how much he would have to learn for SAT II.
We want to start visiting schools around Passover just to get a feel of what he likes. We will be going to NY, so I was thinking U of Del, Marist and am open to other ideas.

Chocchipcookie: It amazes me how much my son has grown from Freshman to sophmore year. Son will do lots of math/science homework, English not so much. I like the idea of visiting Pittsburg because it sounds like a great college city for a Jewish kid and if CMU proves to be to much of a reach U of Pitt might work.
Is your son doing First Robotics now? Its our HS’s first year, we have about 5 dedicated kids, his friend’s school has 50 kids. He is spending every free minute at school and it is so nice to see him have a social outlet.

mom24boys:

Yes, we loved Pittsburgh when we visited. We have a cousin that’s a freshman now at CMU and loves it. She is Orthodox/Kosher. The Hillel building is right between the two schools (CMU & Pitt) and it seems to be very active and welcoming.

We just looked into First Robotics. Our neighboring h.s. has a team and they welcomed us to join them. We were supposed to go to watch the first competition, but the snow postponed it for another week or so. This h.s. has Vex Robotics, which seems to be similar to First. Yeah, the coach, who is the h.s. Physics teacher, warned me that he’ll be spending lots of time there building the robots! That’s good, though, and he’ll meet like minded kids. There are approx. 25-28 kids who are active now. He is involved in a few other ec’s, so we’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out & shuffle things around in order to fit it all in.

Kathiep also mentioned Marist in one of her posts, but when I went onto the website, I did not see any engineering programs! Am I missing something?

Thanks for telling me that you saw a big change from Freshman to Sophomore years. Looking forward to it!

Just an amusing note, here. From pages back:

CC has Terms of Service requiring the use of English only in posts, since we have an international readership. This post stands because the context here makes the meaning evident to all readers. Warning: if anyone starts describing, in detail, their gall bladder operation all in Yiddish – it will not stand! :)

Back to regular programming…

chocchip - yes - I saw the Wake Forest article about the baseball coach donating a kidney to a player. Absolutely amazing, heartwarming story. But thanks for mentioning it.

mom24boys, you deserve so much credit for everything that you have done to help your son through everything! I just want to send some hugs your way and say that this admirable perseverence on the part of you and your son really seems to be paying off!

Chocchip: Never heard of Vex Robotics, we’ll have to look into it. A girl from our Temple is very involved in her HS robotics and my son has been slowly (very slowly 2 years) trying to ask her out and they are spending a lot of time talking robotics so this is good.
Marist is on the list for Computer Science (they are very tied into IBM). He is not 100% committed to engineering, could be CS, Applied Mathmatics or some science not including bio. Next year he has 2 engineering classes so that should clarify his path.

Levirm - Thank you and keeping the faith is something I always struggle with, I loss sight of how far we have come and how well he is doing and get bogged down in day to day. It is only when I pause that I can see how far he has really come.

Article on UConn Hillel:

[Overwhelming turnout for UCONN Hillel Parlor Meeting - News - West Hartford News](http://www.westhartfordnews.com/articles/2011/02/06/news/doc4d4c82fb7b5f5365187650.txt)

http://www.uconnhillel.org/</a></p>

Just want to mention this as another option for “B” students who want a larger school. If you are looking at Indiana, Penn State, Maryland and so forth - look into UConn as well. I’d have it on S2’s list if it was further south.

A B/B+ student with about a 1200 SAT should be accepted. Offers early action. COA about $36,000.

Because I posted something about immunizations a while back when someone asked, I just wanted to mention that I started a thread on this because NEW RECOMMENDATIONS from the CDC will come out on Friday specifically targeting this age group for a second dose of meningococcal vaccine:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1084849-important-new-immunization-recommendation-college-bound-college-students.html</a>
Just wanted to tell you in case you usually go straight to this thread like I usually do! :)

Thanks for the update info, Levirm. That reminds me to make annual checkup app. for S2 who will be turning 15 soon. If S1 will be starting college before his next annual checkup, can I call for him to just have updated shots before he goes?

Mom24boys:

That’s really cute. Tell your S to get moving already and ask her to go out for ice cream or something…actually in this weather, maybe hot chocolate! :)

Interesting that you said non-Bio Science. My S got all A’s & B’s except for Bio where he got a solid C. What’s this all about? I’ve heard from many sources that mechanical & analytical kids don’t do well in Biological Sciences! My S definitely wants Mech. engineering, so Marist may not be an option for us. Btw: the friend that we know at WPI is studying Applied Math & possibly Actuarial Science, not engineering. He got an 800 on the Math SAT…that’s not going to happen in this household! I have to tell you, though, my S also really enjoys reading, which is typically not a strength of Math & Science kids. Wish we had engineering classes for him to take, but what we lack at our h.s., he is able to find in summer programs.
