Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

I have to credit Rodney on knowing about the Hillel event…she PM’d me awhile ago and I told D about it so, when she had to sign up for sessions, she knew to work around it. During check in there was a very small flyer but it would have been easy to miss…Rodney had been in touch with Hillel so I’m guessing she was told about the event through a conversation (Rodney?) but, as for the others, I’m really not sure how they found out, unless they saw they flyer.

We did miss a general reception–a meet and greet type event but, other than that, the timing was good and we didn’t miss any type of presentation.

I thought the turnout was good too!

Don’t worry, how you wrote it didn’t sound at all bad, mhc!

There were maybe a handful of Jewish students in my high school class, btw. It’s almost unfathomable to think there really could have been up to 20 Jewish students in the high school then if there were five per class (that many, no way, there couldn’t have been). Seriously, this is how I’m used to thinking!

Congrats to the Elon crew on having such a positive experience!

Good afternoon all; who would have thought being away for three days would have so much catching up to do at home and at work…It’s 3:30 PM already???

anyway, awhile back I had been scoping the Hillel website because a friend at UNC Chapel Hill found out that Elon was doing an event with them; I was actually on the Hillel calendar and saw the reception schedule for March 11th…following that I noticed that at the top of the Elon Hillel page it was asking for kids to send their email addresses and hometowns to receive emails…and that the event was announced last week…

The Hillel group (at least at Elon) is not permitted to contact students through the admissions office so it wasn’t through them…but if one is paying attention to the website and looked in their orientation packet it was there…

and btw, my daughter commented that at least 5-10 people who she met throughout the weekend were not aware of the get-together before they got there and there were quite a few members of the male species who refused to attend anyway (her words not mine)…

mhc: they talked about the 8% number but, honestly, they won’t really know until after May 1st…we personally know a bunch of kids who were deferred and admitted that are an unknown…the 2009 number you quote is definitely outdated but it’s probably growing about 50 a year (in other words, new freshman replacing graduating seniors increasing)…if the whole school was 8% declared, as collage1 mentions, it would probably settle somewhere around 400…

Nancy Luberoff told us a story of a young man who didn’t show up for ANYTHING until junior year; and nobody on campus knew he was Jewish…I have a feeling that is not uncommon on alot of campuses

btw, there were a number of kids that are deciding between UDel and Elon around here…which is a little odd (not the two, but the fact that there are a number)…

doesn’t anyone want to know anything about other stuff? academics? yada yada?? ask away…I don’t want to ramble…

My D was accepted at Elon EA but still hasn’t made a decision yet. She was trying to get in to the BFA in Musical Theatre and really loves Elon so may end up there anyways. She will not be able to attend either of the Accepted weekends due to conflicts. (We have already been on campus twice). I had contacted the President of Hillel awhile back and she said they had about 250 (active 50) but I am assuming this will increase after this year. I am thrilled to hear that they are trying to have services on campus this fall for students who cannot make it home (we are from Syracuse suburbs). Rodney, did your D get to work on her schedule yet while she was there or was it more just an introductory weekend? I love the school and would be thrilled if my D ends up here.

Sending good wishes to those waiting for their letter from Delaware and to those waiting for Elon tomorrow. Keep us posted!

Rodney or Collage1, did you get any information while there on the costs associated with Winter Session; either if a student were going to stay at school and take a 3 week course or travel?

UDel also has a January winter term and I’ve read that the costs for the course, room and required meal plan are in excess of $5k. Of course a student can always just come home, but a long period of time at home when friends are still away at school leads to boredom, restlessness, and wanting to do something. Usually it’s too short of a time to find a temporary job. Michigan doesn’t have a “winter term” but it has a long period between terms and for my son it has always led to questions of what to do, or boredom or…expense.

Lulu: they had group session with academic advisors but it was totally an overview (which I could probably go over with you on the phone if my daughter actually would share with me what they discussed; lol)…but no, they didn’t start building their schedules necessarily;

maybe collage1 can chime in on this also (unless her daughter, like mine, slept the whole plane ride home and basically slept all day today)

MHC: Winter term at the Elon campus is all included in fall tuition, room and board (which, I think, is why the meal plan is more expensive for fall than spring)…the travel programs for Winter term (which btw, the large majority of freshman don’t really do) are extra only for the travel portion (not the academic credit) and are all listed on the study abroad website for next year with $$ amounts posted…

there was a discussion during one of the parent’s sessions re: winter term and freshman adjustment issues: what they have found is that if kids have had a hard time adjusting to college life, it is very beneficial to attend winter term for the following reasons:

1) less time at home becoming “vampires” (sleeping all day; out all night) and getting used to being at home for a long time again

2) winter term seems to get alot of these kids over the hump; they are only taking one class which can be very interesting or unusual…and it is a very social time period; the classes are either 8:30-11:00 or like 1-4 so everyone is around alot…

MHC: did the Delaware letter arrive today?

An interesting sidelight to the ongoing discussion about big time sports schools is the curren tissue of Sports Illustrated’s report showing that, on the top 25 football teams, slightly over 8% of the scholarship players have criminal records. And to think parents worry about the impact of a C+!

Surprisingly, Pitt had the most playes with criminal records–22. That’s an interesting contrast with BYU, which just suspended a key player from its top 10 basketball team, reportedly for having had consensual premarital sex, which is a violation of its honor code.

Lulu63 - My D did not attend the Orientation Weekend - they told us about 25% do not attend. My guess is the others admitted can bring you up to speed and the University seems to be able to answer any question.

Having that winter session is great on so many levels. They meet more people as the classes meet daily, they usually take a class which is somewhat interesting to them, it is a nice way to get a requirement out of the way, help build the GPA… the list goes on.

I have to LOL. I find out more about what Hillel is planning from this site than from my own d. I am glad they are going to have services on campus. She went for both HH but said it was awkward. I wasn’t sure if it was just the being away part or the fact it involved leaving Elon. I am sure they will have more participation if it is on campus.

Good luck to all awaiting decisions from either the colleges, your children or both.

Congrats to all who have one SAT or ACT under their belt - it is a process.

D admitted to Elon! and envelope from UDel came too.

MHC: Congratulations to you and your daughter! I love singing on in the morning and seeing good news.

Great news mch!

congrats mhc48!

mhc, congratulations to your daughter! Please update us as to what goes into her decision!
Senior parents: it would be great if you could update us as to your students’ decisions and choices. There has been so much news on this thread that some of us have lost track of everyone’s details! I am interested in what your students’ choices are, and why they are inclined to choose one college over another.

Completely off topic but timely for those inclined to contribute toward Japan relief: many people try to donate through a Jewish organization if possible - the Jewish Joint Distribution Committee has a stellar record of delivery, of course there is no proselytizing as a “ticket” to aid, and it has the added benefit of improving relations. Your local Federation probably has a mailbox for accepting these contributions, such as this:

mhc - congrats to you and your D! Wonderful news. So - what happens now? Which way are you leaning and what are the factors that you are considering?

Very happy for Mhc and your D! Great news…

Thanks for all the on and off the board congrats. Now comes the choosing phase. She’s getting a lot of dubious anectodal info from friends and schoolmates so I’m going to suggest we go to the Admitted students days for the schools she’s most interested in. Also a cousin of her mother’s is a private college counsellor in Bethesda Maryland and I have written to her.

My guess is she is not the only one who may not have finally made up her mind about where to go and so we’ll keep you posted on this part of the process too.

Great idea…

Congrats mhc!!!
