Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Wonderful news MHC. I am very happy for you and your daughter. Can’t wait to hear how the decision making process goes.

Congratulations to D! Good job, Mom!

Let’s try this again. Congratulations, Dad!

(hopefully this is correct – reminder to self – eat first, post second)

A huge congrats to MHC and daughter  Maybe another student from this thread to meet up at Elon in August!!

Totally off topic but I was logging on to aol and the first thing I see (at aol.com) is the Macabeats and a link to hear their song about Purim. It’s great–check it out! Also so great to see it being promoted on aol!

Representing “B” Jews on the west (left?) coast … DS is in at UC Santa Cruz. He had to go online at 3:00 a.m. to find out. Now it’s between SUNY Purchase and UCSC!

Yay! Great news!

Alaskan Airline apologizes to passengers, but…

Egan said three specific instances that went beyond the men’s prayers appeared to be unusual behavior to the crew:

Flight attendants instructed everyone to stay seated with their seatbelts fastened as the aircraft flew through turbulence shortly after takeoff. The three passengers disregarded repeated requests, however, and stood up several times to retrieve objects from their luggage in the overhead bin that the crew had never seen, including small black boxes fastened with what appeared to be black tape. The crew learned after the plane landed that these were tefillin boxes worn during the prayer ritual.

The men prayed aloud together in a language unfamiliar to the crew while wearing what appeared to be black tape and wires strapped to their forearms and foreheads and wires on their chests. Their actions and behavior made some other travelers and the crew uneasy. The three passengers responded, but provided very little explanation, to a flight attendant’s questions about the tefillin boxes and what they were doing.

Black tape and wires??? Wires on their chest? Methinks Egan is trying a bit too hard.

I’ll bet they had Osama-like beards too.

And maybe even easily reachable, frayed white trigger wires hanging out of their pants.

And big dangerous black hats…

calv1n, your son must be pleased as a peach. Folks not from the west coast sometimes don’t realize the UCs are a big deal to us out here. Is UCSC his first choice? Based on your posts a few days ago I’m guessing it is.

Oldest son almost went to Ithaca – beautiful campus, great people.

Another thought, since I also had “B” students. . .if he’s focusing on a school where he might not get in, or has been wait-listed, get him an interview. A well-rounded enthusiastic student who interviews well can leapfrog over the “maybe” pile who look just a little bit better on paper. That’s what we had to do with ours – great kids, they just don’t look all that fab on paper. Once the schools actually talked to them, they got in.

Congratulations to everyone getting acceptances! Very excited to hear where everyone decides to go!

Calv1n, congrats ucsc is a great school if a fab location. so happy your son has some great choices.

Congratulations on all of the acceptances! I would love to hear more about the UDEL admitted students day. UDEL is still on the list in the “maybe” column :)

UC Santa Cruz…

Having grown up in Orange County, I have no doubt Santa Cruz was the dream school for many of my classmates.

Me, the non-surfing type ;-), I headed a little farther north.

Calv1n: Congratulations to you and your son. Sitting here on a gray March east coast day, UCSC sounds pretty enticing.

Congratulations to calv1n’s son on his acceptance to gorgeous UC Santa Cruz! Please update us on his decision and what factors he is weighing.

Correction, sigh, I moved north of Santa Barbara (another beautiful spot!) at that time, but not as far north as Santa Cruz. Had the right school in mind, but boy did I space out! How many times can I do that in one morning? Believe it or not, I’ve lived in southern CA, along the central coast, and in northern CA, and we have relatives down there! Must be all the PNW rain has seeped into my brain.

still haven’t eaten any food and it’s after 1:00…

apologies for my post-itis this morning

And Congratulations to All The Acceptees!

I hesitate to post this in light of calv1n’s S’s good news today, but posting it tomorrow or the day after won’t change the content. The Chronicle just hit my inbox a few minutes ago and this was the lead article.

[Education Dept. Investigates Complaint of Anti-Semitism at UC-Santa Cruz - Faculty - The Chronicle of Higher Education](http://chronicle.com/article/Education-Dept-Investigates/126742/?sid=pm&utm_source=pm&utm_medium=en)

I’m afraid that US Santa Cruz is not unique.

Wow - PRJ - thank you so much for bringing this to our collective attention. Calv1n - what do you think? Does this affect the decision making?
