As we get closer to the time that early applications are submitted I would suggest that if there are schools that look like real contenders on paper but you can’t get to visit them apply anyway. The visit can happen after the acceptance and you may find that THAT school is THE school.

Visit all the schools you can but sometimes it isn’t possible to see them all before applicaton time. It still may be worthwhile to apply.

Catching up on today’s posts and saw that flipper2’s (did I get that right?) S was admitted to Puget Sound. D saw the post and said Puget Sound’s results are out?? She just logged on and was accepted and received merit aid of $15,000! WOW!! :)

"Samtalya: Is your S the one interested in entreprenurialship? Are you only looking south of where you live? He doesn’t want Boston, ie; Babson or Bentley at all? "

Yes, choc chip my son is interested in entrepreneur studies. He very much dislikes the winter and cold weather and will south, so it makes sense for him to look south. He also doesn’t want to go as far to Texas or California. I am very happy to support his choice to go south, as I plan on moving as soon as I can too!!

You are right there are some great schools north and my D will stay as far north as she can when it comes to her turn!

Collage1: Congrats on the acceptance and merit aid!

Samtalya: I’m glad to hear that you plan to visit some more schools. The weather issue does limit the choices. Both of my daughters originally wanted to head South, so I checked out most of the options on the east coast. I’m looking forward to hearing about your visits.

Elon question… S may be interested in Business, but is truly undecided. Do you apply to a specific school at Elon? If so, is it more difficult to get accepted to Business than Arts & Sciences or Communications? What is the policy for transferring from one school to another?

S will obviously have this issue at many of the schools he applies to, but at some schools the considerations seem more clear cut. For example, more difficult to get into Business at Penn State; difficult to transfer into Business at UMD.

Mom2009 - this is the link for the PDF of this year’s app. They ask for intended major - but you are not applying to a specific school as far as I know. One more question to clarify when we visit in April.

Elon: you do not apply to a specific school or major…and ALOT of kids go in undecided…(as was evidenced by Spring orientation)…as RVM stated, you put an interest on your app, but has no relevance until you declare your major…

and when you declare a major, you are not “in the school” it just so happens that’s where your major is housed; other than completing required courses, kids switch around all the time…there was a student panel at one point this past weekend where more than half of the panel had switched at some point…

BBYO: B’nai Brith Youth Organization…

Otto: what a cute name for a dog!!!..I actually have a close CC friend with a dog with that name…hmmmmmm

Thanks for the Elon responses! Their approach sounds perfect for my S. How many 17/18 year olds truly know what career they want to pursue? And, if they think they know, isn’t it just a gut feeling at this point? True, they might know what subjects they are strong in, but do straight A’s in high school History really translate to a career in law, for example? And what characteristics would make a 17 a perfect candidate for a business degree? I think most kids need to to explore.

My cats names are Mitzvah, Tikvah, and Mac (short for Maccabee). We have a new cat that is coming to our house that we are calling Kelev!! (dog in Hebrew) 3 are male and they have all been cricumsized. The female always has a headache!!!

Ok - I have to “out” poster Otto1234 - I recognized that one at once - S2 and his friend. Oy.

In other exasperating news - S2 met with his GC today. She felt that Elon, CofC and Susquehanna were all safeties (?) and JMU and UNDCP were matches - and that he needed some reaches on his list. Suggested Duke, Wake, Penn, Vandy and Lehigh. Say it with me, OY!!!

RVM, go with your gut. you know your S and if those schools are right or not and what is best. i always thought those schools were 4.0 unweighted, but your S has great ACTs. Geez she put some high priced on the list, why not unc chapel hill and u va then?

OK - Oy! And isn’t Otto a fish name?
Rockevillemom and others - have you tried the College Match function on CC with his new ACT score? What does it say?
Do you mean UNDCP? Do you mean University of Maryland College Park?
Yes, there is fit. But there are also practical matters. For example, you might consider recruiters and where they might go to find prospective employees - unless your student plans to go into the family business or something.
If your idea of “fit” now has some “stretch”, you might really think about Lehigh for its well-regarded business program.

We are Catholic and don’t ever get our cats fixed ;)
