Back to the Kansas comparison…Overland Park, KS has a HUGE Jewish population; many, many Jewish kids attend UK from there…

Why do I know this? I just recommended UK to a bunch of kids around here that want big, rah-rah and will not be admitted to Indiana (due to GPA and SAT/ACT scores)…can’t wait to hear what their impressions are upon visiting…I’m thinkin that this school is a “diamond in the rough”…

Now, if we’re talkin about Nebraska…haha; whole diff ballgame

But back to our regularly scheduled programs…

MHC: what were the tuition increases for OOS students in California??? the UC’s were already in the stratosphere…

Rodney, I haven’t seen any reports for OOS students in California, but there was an article in the LA Times about two weeks ago about the three most prestigous schools in the UC family: Berkeley, UCLA and San Diego recruiting more out of state students because of the increased tuition they pay.

^^yes, I saw that article…at a total COA of $53,000 (Berkeley), that seems like a logical way for CA to close the budget gap and the reduction in state aid…ya think?

cherryhill - the JMU app for early action is now online. Not sure how much it changes from year to year. Pretty straightforward application and an optional personal statement.

I noticed that several of my daughter’s classmates were accepted to UCLA and Berkley this year. One girls chose UCLA over Miami and Maryland. That COA is shockingly high for a state school.

Trying to get my D to work on her college essay over the summer is proving more difficult than I thought…between job, hanging out with her BF, watching tv and facebooking there never seems to be a time when she will sit down and focus on it. Hoping that our visit on Saturday to U Del will inspire her to get more excited about the college process. Have invited BF to go along to make it more fun. The weather report looks good for Saturday, so I’m psyched for the visit!

Be careful with that one, pamom59, where’s the BF going to or going to apply to school, and will your D be overly influenced by what he thinks or says?

BF is a rising junior and hasn’t taked his SATs yet so we don’t know where he’ll apply- though I’m guessing Penn State will be on his list (its also on my D’s). He actually seems more focused on colleges that she is so I hope his going along will be a positive influence! And I know if he doesn’t go with us she’s likely to spend the entire tour texting him anyway lol…

S2 submitted his first college application today! He did the EA app for JMU - which was really quite straight forward and a good place to start. I saw a real improvement in his attitude towards the process once he hit “submit” - I think he was more nervous than he wanted to let on - and now that he has one done - he seems much more relaxed. He also got his first AP score today - a 4 in AP Psych - so another good milestone. All in all - a good day!

Speaking of AP exams…
I know they aren’t the right thing for all B students, but if your kid is taking some or will take some, be sure to include a perusal of the AP policy at the schools on your list as you make your spreadsheets or other information tracking methods.

There was considerable variability across schools on my daughter’s list as to the amount of credit, if any, they would award for various tests, the score necessary to get the credit, and the maximum allowable credits that could be brought in using AP scores, credit by exam (IB, CLEP, etc.) or pre-enrollment college-level courses (e.g. Community College summer classes or concurrent enrollment while in high school).

She wound up at a school which was so generous that I even convinced her to sign up for and study independently for the US History exam (she’d never taken the AP US History class–they don’t offer it at our school) because they will give her 6 credits, and it will satisfy a two-course distribution requirement AND a requirement in her major. Conversely, had she picked another school on her list that limits kids to X number of courses, she might not even have taken all the exams she was signed up for since they wouldn’t have made a difference in terms of credit or placement. (Just got the scores back–she got the credit!)

So…check out those credit-by-exam policies as you do your research.

Roosevelt Field Shopping Mall, and all of the eating places in that area along Old Country Road, are very close to Adelphi. There is likely some kind of transport from the campus to Roosevelt Field. Also…there are lots of local students who should have access to cars. Be sure to make friends with one of them!!!

FYI…Ben’s Deli has a branch on Old Country Road…not far from Adelphi…in the same strip center as Bagel Boss, Stop and Shop grocery and Barnes and Nobel. Ben’s uses all Kosher meat…and doesn’t have any dairy products…but they are not shomer shabbos…so no orthodox certification. Excellent NY Deli food!

Hey, all of this free info on Adelphi is awfully nice of you folks!

There is a free shuttle that circuits through campus, to the train station, the mall, and several other stops. Also we figure that being on a campus with many local students and commuters my D is bound to make some friends with cars. She has no worries about getting around.
