Congrats Rockville! What a wonderful way to start a weekend.

Rockville - congrats on the first application and first ap score. Two milestones. Got D’s AP scores yesterday and am beyond thrilled! So happy for her.

We are in waiting mode here until D finishes her summer programs, then she knows she has to hit the ground running. May knock out a few of the safety school easy apps first, just to get the process moving!

And it gets even better - turns out that Univ. of South Carolina and JMU “share” an application website - sort of like common app on a smaller scale. So - creating the USC account was basically already done - and most of the application was already completed! So - it took only a few minutes to complete and submit that one as well! Quite an unexpected bonus.

In other news - I noticed this morning that Naviance has been updated to include results from the Class of 2011 - which is early - last year it was on August 1. So - it was interesting to look at the schools on S2’s list and see how many applied and were accepted last year. So - if you have Naviance at your hs - check it out - I’m assuming that if our hs now shows 2011 than so does everyone else as well.

rvm- FYI there was a mom on these boards (can’t remember her name or if she is still active) whose son was in the sport management program in So. Carolina. She raved about the program and ofter mentioned the great opportunities he was getting. I think they were from the northeast too but don’t think they were Jewish.
Regardless- what I do remember was her enthusiasm for the program at USC.

Congrats on such a smooth and fast start RVM, I am jealous. Mdmom, we are in the same position as you and I hope that my dd will be ready to jump into the fray. She does have a week of Color Guard Leadership camp and then 2 weeks of band camp still to come, but we will have to work diligently between those things. Good luck to everyone!

marny1 - hi - I think you may be referring to “cathymee” on USC. I did read some of her old posts - her son is half-Jewish - although not observant - and she is a great booster for USC.

cathymee sounds familiar- so i’m guessing that was her.
I was on many of the old sport management threads- all I remembered was that there was a mom giving alot of praise to the program at USC. Sounded good to me too!!
If you can take advantage of in state tuition, that could definitely make USC a contender.

USC is an interesting possibility. Besides receiving in-state tuition for the sports mgmt major - there is also a nice array of merit scholarships that S2 might qualify for. I also noticed when looking on our hs Naviance that 10 students from the Class of 2011 are heading to USC - which is more than the 5 that are going to JMU and the 4 that are headed to VT. This is the most that our hs has ever sent there - which is quite interesting and I do want to find out more about why/how that happened.

This story seems to have faded from the news - but her friends and family are still searching and raising money.

My town apparently sends a number of students to this school each year, but I was totally unfamiliar with it before last year when a friend told me her daughter was there. One of the “persons of interest” is from my town’s HS, but my older kids do not know this person, who was a year and two ahead of them.

As the parent of a 19 year old girl, this story freaks me out. My D is the RA kids call when they are drunk and want help. I wish Lauren had had someone to help her. Instead, it seems she was surrounded by people who seem not to have realized her situation. It’s also sadly too typical that kids think it’s cool to drink to the point of obliviousness.

I hope she is found safe and sound.

On another note, I didn’t even realize that a school in Indiana could be a mecca for Jewish B students.

Joan52 - that’s one of the most interesting things I have learned during my college searches - you find Jewish college students in unusual places! Indiana University, University of Kansas, College of Charleston - there are many surprises. To me - that’s what makes the journey of the Jewish “B” student so fascinating - the options are varied and not always obvious.

The biggest surprise for me was Earlham College.

Earlham College in Indiana? Now that’s a new one we have not discussed. Their website shows about 1200 students - per the national Hillel website - about 10% of those 1200 are Jewish. It does fit the “B” student classification with an 1170 average SAT and a 26 average ACT score… There is website for a Jewish Student Union - but it seems out of date.

http://legacy.earlham.edu/~jsu/content/mission/

http://www.earlham.edu/about

Yes in Indiana. We took a tour when we toured some schools in Ohio. It was not a good fit for our son, but it is a lovely small Quaker school. I think it is a good match for a solid B student. Some students like to cook their own food. They actually have food “lockers” for students. I have not seen that anywhere else, so I found that to be a bit different.

For anyone looking at some of the OH schools, Earlham is in Indiana, but was not a far drive from another school that we were touring in OH. This is the only school that we toured in Indiana.

Anyone else starting apps yet? I know we are really early - but want to get as much done before school starts as possible. Started Elon’s yesterday - a more challenging app than either JMU or USC - so he is going to proceed more slowly. It reminds me of the Wake Forest supplement with various short answer questions - which are actually kind of tricky. Fun in a way - as they force you to be introspective - but S2 seems to be lacking in insight at the moment.

RVM, your post triggered a vague recollection of last minute frenzy the Elon app caused us. Although, come to think of it, it might have been C of C which also had several short questions. Whichever it was, my D had finished her answers long before the application was due, but filling it out drove her and then me crazy. My D was sure that she was within the word limits to the short questions and I recehecked it, but she kept on getting error messages that the response was too long. She kept having to truncate it more and more til she was afraid it was losing all its well crafted character. It finally dawned on us that the online form was counting characters, not words.

Just tuck that possibility in the back of your mind when filling out the on-line apps for any schools which ask for short, one or two sentence or twitter-like limited word responses.

^^ditto here; the think fast responses are very, very limited as to what will fit into the online app…

RVM: the Elon app took my D almost from end of July through middle of September…def the one that took the most thought and, yes, introspection…some of her peers decided not to apply when they saw the app; others did it very quickly with little thought and were not admitted…(with higher stats I might add)

D just came back from Italy on Sunday. Trying to get her to focus, but she refuses, so working on cleaning up room and reading for school and some of the AP art assignments that are due. She did take a quick look at the Common App essays and because she took creative writing she thinks it will be fairly easy (right!). Tomorrow, I am going to give her a schedule before I go to work for the day and then sit with her on Thursday to show her all the stuff that needs to be done before band camp starts. I think there will be a revolt. RVM, what was your strategy to get your son to settle in? I am completely at a loss–girls can be so nasty (or at least this one) when she does not want to do something. OY.
