I really feel for you east coasters who lost power this weekend, I cannot IMAGINE the stress that would’ve created in my house days before all those apps were due.

The people on this thread are just so nice!

If a school extends its ED/EA deadline will they still notify the same time?

Power still out at in-laws in north jersey. guess who spent the day here and is sleeping over?

^^yes, Samtalya, notification stays the same…confirmed

Stillnadine, just wanted to share that a friend’s niece is a freshman at Guilford and loves it there. She talks about all the things you talk about–sense of community, support, diversity with acceptance, etc. So it sounds like it’s not just talk–they really do follow through on what they promise. She feels it might be a good fit for my D, who seems to have many similar issues to her niece, but I’m concerned about sending D so far away. She has tried to tell me that if it is the right school, the distance won’t matter. But it still makes me nervous.

Time to vent about the lack of electricity!!! In-laws finally got it back today, after spending the night here; my parents are still out. They spend the day here, then go home to sleep. Lack of heat is a huge problem. The frustration is rising. Many in my town are also still out; schools are closed in the area, kids were kept in from trick or treating due to downed live wires. Our trees were decimated. Looked like a war zone immediately after the storm left. Central Park may have lost up to 1,000 trees. Unreal.

OK, vent over…

U. of Pittsburgh,
My d got an email tonight from the admissions office of Pitt. They sent her a letter about her essay. I assume they get around 20,000 plus applications. I find it amazing and moving that they chose to respond to her. We can only hope that this means good things will follow. Here is the middle part.

On behalf of the Admissions Committee, thank you for submitting a personal essay with your application for admission.

Being faced with challenges, struggles, and adversity unfortunately is a part of life. True character is displayed in how well one deals with these hardships. The Admissions Committee at the University of Pittsburgh reads thousands of essays each year, and your essay resonated with us. Your perseverance and determination are to be admired. We thank you for sharing your experiences with us.

A classy move by a large university. Scored with me…

SoCalDad, sounds like good news may be coming your way. Congrats!

wow socal, that is exceptional communication. your d has already had several acceptances and i am sure there will be more to come. the biggest problem will be choosing.

Socaldad: What a great email! I think it’s a good sign. My friend’s D got a similar email last year, and she was accepted a short time after that.

Rodney and Eastcoast: I hope you get your power back and life goes back to normal soon.

We got some good news yesterday. D1 got her first job offer! It’s a great job with a consulting company. She has another final interview next week for a similar job in a preferable location, but this still feels great.

Socaldad, that’s so impressive! Pitt is on our radar too. Good luck!

second school acceptance, another audition video ready for the mail, another one almost ready- that leaves 2 MT schools to finish and the 5 academic schools to start…I hope some of the essays can translate as the auditions, big debate tournaments and performances then rehearsals start after next week. Winter break is another show. That basically leaves Thanksgiving weekend as the theater group she belongs to does a show from start to finish over winter break.

MomJr., Congrats on job offers. Those are better than college acceptances any day.

socaldad- that is great! Consider it the equivalent of the"likely" letter. My D also received the email, and was accepted. Ironically her acceptance came in the mail before the email did. I suspect you will hear soon. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for her!

We are heading to Pitt this weekend see my older D who is a freshman there. Younger D will come along, though she now says she doesn’t want to go that far away. Go figure. But I take her acceptance at Pitt as a good omen for the other schools she applied to!

I’m going to Pitt this weekend to see Bruce Springsteen and NEXT weekend to see the school. I thought my D’s essay was good but she hasn’t gotten the email. :-(

Took D1 to an information session and tour of University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) today, since she only had a half day and it was the last day of the quarter.

We were looking at it because it offers the two things she is most interested in (Secondary Ed and Social Work), would be in state tuition and it has developed quite a good reputation as a real up and coming school. It doesn’t hurt that the M/F ratio is 60/40 as opposed to the other way around, for once! haha

Overall, though, she didn’t get the vibe she was looking for and, even though it is about her preferences, I agreed with her.

Good points:
Large campus
Diverse population, much more so than some other schools we’ve seen
The meal we ate was quite good and had some different options: several vegetarian, a gluten free area and a kosher area (for dinner, four days a week.)
Dorm room was large.

Things that didn’t appeal to her:
The architecture: was not the friendly Southern style that appeals most to her. More sterile or “institutional” looking. That being said, there were a couple of seriously awesome looking buildings, like the library and the physics building.
She didn’t feel as though she “fit” with most of the students that she saw.
It had a much stronger “tech” feel/ math feel than a liberal arts feel.

This review is really more subjective than anything, so probably not all that helpful, but it is what it is and we are one step closer to narrowing down the list!

Wow, Socaldad. I got shivers from the response from Pitt. I loved Pitt too and thought it a really classy school. Sounds like your dd is doing great. Congrats.

Mom, so glad your dd got a great job offer. How wonderful.

"Wow, Socaldad. I got shivers from the response from Pitt. " I second that, but for me it was a bit teary. How awesome!!!

I hope life and power are back to normal soon for those of you affected by the storm.

Thanks for all your kind words. I keep reading it. Believe me, lots of tears last night in our house.

Socaldad: It is a wonderful feeling when you know others recognize your child as being the wonderful person you know they are.

Pitt.

D just got official acceptance package in mail. Last night’s email was better. So happy for her. Now she does not care about any others, til Delaware. She will probably choose between the two.
Thanks for allowing me to share…Good wishes for all my friends here.

Aw, socaldad…I, too, had tears in my eyes reading the letter…please wish your daughter congrats from all of us here in Cyberland.

Our town is down to 400 without power and, yes, we are one of the 400…seriously?
