congratulations to you both, cherryhill!

Congratulations, Cherryhill! It sounds like a good idea to send in the deposit just in case.

Cherry hill, Congrats on Rutgers. I recall you thinking that the engineering program would be a stretch at Rutgers. Was your son accepted into eng?
Does udel have an engineering program?
I think we may do the multiple deposit thing as well. Waitin til march 15th will be tough on many of us…
Again, congrats…

We (cough) he decided to go undecided. Too many options were interesting. I think this is really the best bet.

@socaldad: I am remembering back to when you hopped on to this thread (early summer?) and you felt pretty dejected by what you expected to be the outcome of your D’s admissions process. Bit by bit, she and you gained confidence and made progress and look at her now! I am thrilled for her (and you) and know that she will be happy and successful wherever she lands.

I’ve been away from CC for a while. To be honest, I found it had become rather addictive and thought I should exercise some restraint. I popped back in out of curiosity and saw a thread where I thought my experience as a physician might be helpful. My advice to a pre-med student (in sum: use your undergraduate years for personal growth and be yourself as you present yourself to med schools) was met by one poster with an odd vehemence bordering on an ad hominem attack. I know such a reaction would never occur on this thread and for that I think you all deserve gratitude and congratulations.

I am also grateful for the help posters here gave me when I had a question about transferring money to my daughter when she is away at college. As a result of advice I received we opened a USAA account allowing her to use the ATM on campus without fees.

As decisions are made and acceptances come in, you all deserve congratulations for forming a community where helpful information and loving support are given freely without even a trace of envy or animosity.

To end on a humorous note I’ll share something from a recent homily by the young priest in our parish: ‘Jesus was a tough dude. He had to be, he had a Jewish mother. I know how that is because I had a Filipino mother’.

College4three,
All that you said is so true. I think we joined this thread back in February or March. I was very concerned. All of you here, have been big a big help, and a godsend. Things did improve. Lots of research and advice, travel, tutoring, marketing, and mazel are making this journey very satisfying. I look forward to how it plays out for all of us.

Irish Doctor, welcome home… If this forum is your worse drug…indulge

Irishdoctor - thank you for your comments. I completely understand what you are saying about other threads - I have had my head bitten off on more than one occasion - not sure why so many of the other threads can be so nasty. Glad we have been able to create a more relaxed and tolerant vibe here - and when we do disagree - we do it gently and with respect.

socaldad - agreeing with college4three - you and your daughter have been on a wonderful journey - it has been a pleasure to be along for the ride. I think you started with low expectations - and perhaps because of that - you have had some wonderful surprises. I hope the good results keep on coming in - but even if you finish with “just” what you already have in hand - you are in great shape!

I am linking this news story from another thread on the Parents forum. I had read this story last week on my own, because it reflected many of the issues my daughter encountered in her pre-med path through a competitive university. I know many of your kids are considering engineering as a college major and would find this interesting. The bottom line is, if you want to do a STEM major plan on studying really hard compared to your classmates in other fields.

<a href=“Why Science Majors Change Their Minds (It’s Just So Darn Hard) - The New York Times”>Why Science Majors Change Their Minds (It’s Just So Darn Hard) - The New York Times;

Socaldad: Congrats to your daughter. We’ll hold off on Dayenu until UDel comes in. S2 attends Pitt and is getting a great Ivyesque education there. He was proof Pitt looks beyond the numbers. He was a relatively accomplished artist in high school but we still thought his Pitt acceptance was a Chanukah miracle (high SAT; low GPA).

Good ole pre-Halloween storm…8 days no power, tomorrow day 9. Going nuts and getting cranky and depressed.

RVM. Thanks. I agree. From here forward…It is all good.

Quakerstate, What year is your Son in? May I ask, where did he live Frosh year, and would he recommend it? We are deciding whether to give a deposit for a better housing position. We know little about the options. Only know about the three towers. If you have any insight, bring it on…

Thanks

He’s a junior now. He lived in Tower B as a Freshman. Very social. Made friends for life (with friends who turned down Ivies for Pitt scholarships). He joined a frat and lived at the frat sophomore year. Now off-campus in South Oakland student ghetto. He’s never had a TA teaching a class and has had some really distinguished professors. He’s found it challenging but doing fine.

chocchipcookie - no power here also - luckily we have a generator so we are staying sane - so much for working on the college apps - S2 gets kicked off the internet every time the well pump goes on!

Really wanted to get a few apps in early - no school Monday either here so he is still waiting to discuss the finishing touches on his essay with his English teacher.

Also the arts supplement music recording is delayed because the music school closed last week - hope it is open this week

Everything is getting pushed to the last minute and there is nothing we can do about it

Breathe deeply!

OMG - so sorry to hear people are still without power - I didn’t realize! How awful. I hope it is restored today - such a long outage!

Sorry to hear about the power outages, Choc and cemusic. It sounds really frustrating, especially when you’re trying to work on applications. I hope it comes back today!

power was finally restored today after 9 long, cold days! I’m doing laundry at the moment and cleaning out refrigerator and freezers, throwing out and starting fresh.

Thanks for your words of encouragement, chemusic. You put things back into perspective for me…I’m grateful we are not working on college apps. at this time, that would have probably put me over the edge! Yes, we will be looking into a generator for ourselves at some point too! Hope your power is back on asap.

Another thread is calling attention to UMBC being featured on 60 Minutes next Sunday - 11/13. Just wanted to mention it here as well - as it has been discussed on this thread.

Hi, Everyone. I was away in FL for a few days and am just catching up here. A couple of things to share:

I think there was talk of Eckherd College a few pages ago. We passed by it the other day and I thought of all of you. I don’t know much about it, but it certainly was nice down there in St. Pete!

UDEL news (from a Facebook post from the Chabad rabbi there): Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT) is starting a chapter there. Note that they already have AEPi.

If anyone’s getting together down at UD in the spring, let me know… good excuse to visit DD and meet friends from this thread!

socaldad - I sent you a pm about Pitt housing. Unfortunately, there is no benefit to depositing early at Pitt as housing is all assigned on a lottery system. Since you have a D not an S, there is a good chance that she ends up in the all girls dorm (Holland). PM me if you have questions about the housing choices.
