Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Happy New Year!

Only 91 days until April 1 decisions are released!

So - who is waiting for what in January? Off the top of my head - I know Univ of Maryland priority apps, Univ of Miami EA and James Madison EA will be released in January. Anyone waiting on those? Others?

Happy New Year! Hope everyone enjoyed the holidays! S is waiting on JMU (mid January) and Miami U (Feb.1). Also got accepted to University of Colorado and SUNY Albany (w/ scholarship!). So happy for S! Never would have thought he would have ended up with so many choices. Had really mediocre freshman and sophomore years in high school, but really turned thing around last year and it’s paid off for him. Hope this experience has shown him that he can accomplish great things when he applies himself!

Mom2009, I love hearing anecdotes like that one about your S. Good for him (and you!)

S doesn’t have apps in to them, but I believe SUNY Binghamton EA notification is 1/23 and UVA is 1/31?

Mom2009 - great news - congratulations!

I’m new, so forgive me if I ask the same old ?'s. I’ve read many of your pages & posts, but am overwhelmed by the sheer #. Love your (updated) “Lessons Learned” list! Is there a list of colleges for the Jewish B student? My D is a NJ Jr with unremarkable SAT scores (570r/590m), a 3.86 GPA-W (unsure of UW/maybe 3.5ish), few EC (sports year-round, @ which she does not excel), no leadership, a summer job & some volunteerism. She’s a great kid (kind, compassionate, gregarious) but lacks motivation. As a mom, I’m doing all the research…she’s not terribly interested. How did you motivate yours? Have you found good colleges that actively recruit Jews for diversity? Muhlenberg is 1 of my 1st choices, but don’t think she’ll make the cut. Any words of wisdom are welcome! Happy 2012! Thx.

Welcome, LuvMomN8er:

I don’t think we compiled a list, but there are so many pages, we might have somewhere along the way!

Tell us what your DD is looking for - location, size, what else - and we can give you a quick recap.

Mom2009: Great news! Must give your DS confidence as he awaits the rest of his decisions.

I just had my first iChat with DD from Venice. They arrived this morning. She looks tired, but happy. Classes start tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone waiting for Jan decisions!

jan- JMU EA and PSU

Congrats mom2009!!

LuvMom - hello and welcome! Happy to help you. First - many kids are not terribly enthralled with the college search process. Neither of my sons were ever that into it. So - don’t worry about that. Some kids become more interested once you actually start visiting colleges and it becomes more real to them.

I think Muhlenberg is a great starting point. She has time to get her scores up a little - and Muhlenberg has a much higher ED acceptance rate if she really loves it. Lots of small schools in PA - Muhlenberg would have the largest Jewish population - but we were also very impressed with Susquehanna - an easier admit - very nurturing, supportive atmosphere. Small Jewish population - but they have a Hillel house and a Rabbi - so they are trying to grow the Jewish population. You may also want to look at Juniata.

Tell us more about geographical preferences, size, and so forth and I know we will have more suggestions for you.

I just wanted to add that for my S, I felt his disinterest in the college search was related to a combination of the following:

a) fear of not getting admitted anywhere
b) impending loss of childhood
c) uncertainty about what to major in
d) being pulled away from friends
e) being completely overwhelmed by the whole process (and hoping that if he ignores the whole thing, it will never happen  )

I helped him get started by checking out college websites and requesting information to be sent to him. Visiting a campus or two junior year often gets the ball rolling. Good luck to you and your D. You are actually way ahead in the process than our family was at this time last year.

luvmom- u might start with the list at p 777 post 11,643 listing acceptances for this group…

for starters its good to narrow down by location and size of school, public/private, etc.

there is also a good college search toolon the cc site

dose she want to get out of NJ?

First, thanks for your help! Familyof3boys, my D definitely suffers from e) overwhelmed with a little fear thrown in, so I’m trying to help w/o pushing. Like your idea of my requesting schools send her info…I’ll do that. Rockvillemom, thanks for the welcome. I have considered Juniata, but not Susquehanna-good to know. Pamom59, yes, she’s looking to leave NJ. I’ve done several searches, and the ideal: small to med-sized (2000-8000) LA college in suburban VA, PA, OH (not a fan of cold weather, but wouldn’t rule out going a little North) with education & accounting majors and a pool (she swims). She needs a nurturing environment and I need to know she won’t encounter anti-semitism.

Denison (ed and econ but no accounting), Wooster (ed and econ but no accounting). Both just opened or are opening new aquatic complexes. Denison’s swim team - mens I think, only - just won their division this year.

Linymom? I missed that your D was going to Venice? I thought she is a sophomore! Is this a Junior study abroad or something else? Anyway, very cool! How long will she be there? Plans to go visit her? :)

Luvmom: I know nothing about Gettysburg College in PA, but heard they have a great swimming pool/program…don’t know if they have a Hillel though, does anyone else out there know? Also, we have talked about York College of PA…that could also be a possibility for your D…maybe you could check out those two!

Mom2009: Congrats on recent acceptances!

Thanks, OHBMom…they are both on my radar. They have Hillel, but couldn’t find swim info. Also was considering Ohio Wesleyan. Your thoughts on diversity at these schools?

Gettysburg has a smallish Hillel. We did visit for S2 last year. Jewish population is estimated at 100-150. Not sure how many students are active in it.

<a href=“Clubs and organizations directory - Gettysburg College”>Clubs and organizations directory - Gettysburg College;

will she be swimming for a team in college? if so look at F&M they have good swim program and are sat optional

My S’s a swimmer too! He just received a brochure from York College. They have a nice new pool (10 lanes!) Wouldn’t it be funny if our kids end up swimming together (or against one another) in college.
