Also love the new format too, Pamom. Thanks for doing that.

Like Vandygrad we are in a holding pattern until we get back SAT scores at the end of the month. Won’t look at any new schools either until the fall.

My 2 Delaware students are going on their Birthright trip in July and my younger daughter will be in Costa Rica on a school trip at the same time. Meanwhile, I’ll be home working to ensure that all 3 will be able to go to college ;-)

I’ve been away for a while, but I know Spectrum has mentioned Trinity as a possibility for a B student. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with two of the rabbis from Temple Beth-El in San Antonio, and I took the opportunity to ask one of them about Hillel at Trinity. He did not have any personal experience but thought that Trinity and UTSA (The University of Texas at San Antonio) co-sponsored a joint program. A little internet research established that there used to be a Jewish student group at Trinity. There may still be one but without an active internet site. There are certainly Jewish faculty members and a number of interesting courses on Jewish culture.

Trinity was founded by the Presbyterian church but is now only loosely affiliated and is essentially secular. The campus, designed by San Antonio architect O’Neil Ford, is beautiful, centrally located but feels suburban. The college has an excellent theatre program and is well regarded as a liberal arts school. Most of the students seem to be from Texas and the southwest, but I’m sure the school and the student body would be most welcoming and friendly to students from any part of the country. San Antonio is the nation’s only majority hispanic major city and it is a very open and friendly place with rich cultural traditions. The Jewish community is active and vibrant, but Jewish students from the east might discover that their co-religionists are very Texan as well as Jewish.

I wish I could report that Trinity had a larger Jewish presence because I think it has a lot to offer the ‘A-/B student’. I think Jewish students would feel welcomed there and could find the San Antonio Jewish community quite welcoming as well.

I’ll have to end with two disclaimers. I’m not Jewish. I moved to Texas from Seattle and I have tell you that there are only three seasons: mild, not unbearably hot, and hot as hell.

Rodney - double celebration!! Congrats - all the best.

To the comment, “I want her life”… I feel this sentiment each day. The opportunities that our kids enjoy - lucky them! Wish I could come back as my own kid!!

I too like the new format - nice list - everyone should be proud.

Hi y’all! checking in after son’s freshman year just ended. He had a wonderful year at Michigan and worked his tush off with a full load of classes, doing research for a faculty member, and pledging a social and business fraternity. Now, we wait to hear if he got into the business school (and I thought we were done with applications and essays…sheesh.) He is interested in other majors, so if he doesn’t get in, then he is ready to follow other paths.

Interestingly, he has been catching up with his local friends and several are transferring back to KU after attending other out-of-state schools. Some have decided they would rather save their money for grad school and others just missed being with “the high school gang” at the state flagship. This is to remind everyone that these days it is not such a big deal to transfer if the first college choice doesn’t work out. One girl’s roommate went to Miami U and tried to get into Michigan twice and didn’t make it, and is now headed to Michigan State. What I heard often was that some kids were ready to jump ship after first semester, but after returning from winter break they changed their minds and now love their schools. One girl at a LAC thought she missed the big campus football scene in the fall when her friends were all talking about how much fun it was, but by second semester was happy with her choice.

A lot of adjustments happen freshman year and balancing a work load, along with other activities, is really hard. Son made some terrific friends, both in his dorm, and elsewhere on campus. Now we are dealing with how boring life is by comparison at home. So to relieve his boredom we found him a job at a friend’s business were he files stuff all day until he heads to camp as a counselor in June. Now he can be bored and get paid for it, ;-0!

Wishing all you mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day… judging from this thread alone - it is obvious that you are all wonderful mothers who deserve a special day - enjoy!

Yes - shout out to all of the Moms on our thread - put aside the worrying, planning, coaxing, and researching for today - and have a wonderful, restful day. Happy Mother’s Day!

I hope all the moms here had a wonderful Mother’s Day!

It’s DS’ AP week - one today and one on Wed. He doesn’t seem super-worried. Lots of confidence in the AP Physics teacher’s prep (which is DS’ first priority). Completely opposite for the AP Lang teacher. I’m just happy DS took this course - no one has to know the AP test score if it isn’t what DS wants.

The HS just updated our Naviance with the April ACT scores. It’s a happy visual for me  I don’t know why I have to see that to feel better. Such craziness. And I completely feed into it. Silly me.

Good luck to all your AP test takers this week and to everyone else who might be taking finals already. Here in NY we go till nearly the end of June. Still, we are all happy to be on the home stretch.

A great deal if the schools listed are NOT schools for the " B" Jewish student. I think the thread has gone off course.

Oura54: Our focus is the Jewish “B” student but we have become a close group and some of us who joined this thread to help our “B” student also have “A” students and, thankfully, we have not been kicked off!

I hope I can continue to add my insights from my DD’s college search - she is my “B” student and is now finishing her sophomore year at the University of Delaware. Admittedly, my DS (finishing his junior year in HS) is an “A” student and the colleges he is interested in would not have been a possibility for his sister. However, I am interested in the schools for “B” students though as we still need schools that might be more of a sure thing for him (whatever that means - who knows what a “sure thing” is these days) and an opportunity for merit aid.

Like so many people on this thread, we have gotten to know each other over the last two years and we continue to share our journey with our kids - primarily B kids, but also some A kids.

We know this thread is so long and I, for one, don’t expect anyone new to start from the beginning to glean all the info we have shared along the way for our B students. So please ask your specific questions about B schools. We are either in the same boat as you now or have been in the past.

This is a welcoming group and so many of us have stayed past their B students’ acceptances to college. Please stay and join us.

Back to our regularly scheduled program: Ithaca College just announced that it will be test optional for the fall 2013 admissions cycle. In addition, they have added a formal EA (non-binding) deadline…

This is a GREAT option for a “B” student who may not test well on SAT/ACT…

We visited twice…if anyone far flung has questions, pls feel free to PM me…

Oura54: like LINYMOM states, we are all about helping…look at the list of our kids and where they are/ plan on attending…many of those schools are B student schools; albeit some require a ED app for admittance…please fell free to post and ask questions about any of those or other schools your child has an interest in…

Hi,
Though I have gotten some useful information for my truly B student, I do agree with OURA 54. Though I posted that my DD has been accepted to University at Buffalo awhile ago it has still not been added to the list. However, acceptances to schools to Upenn, Cornell, NYU etc are listed. I do not consider these schools for the B student. In fact it is somewhat intimidating when going onto this thread expecting schools for the B student and IVYs are listed. I know my truly B student would never get into these schools. In some respect this thread has become more for the A students. IMO CC already has a lot of information for A students. P. S Great news about Ithaca for the B student.

Spent a couple of days in Charleston, SC. I recall people mentioning C-of-Charleston on this thread. Did anyone go? What a beautiful place to spend 4 years! And Friday night at Beth Elohim, the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the US (according to the flyer), was lovely.

Cama: just met some very happy UBuff parents this weekend at D1 graduation!!
btw, feel free to copy, paste and add your child…that’s how it is updated…I can’t do it right now; I’m not on a computer…

For all of those who are lurking and feel this thread has gone “off course”, please feel free to contribute more posts to get it back on track!!

Many of the originators of this thread have completed their process but come back to visit on a regular basis to help…we do need more regular posters, through, to keep it alive going forward…please don’t hesitate to ask!

liszterve: we visited C of C with our younger D; if she had wanted a city school, this would have been it…loved Charleston!!

Sorry!! I’ve been out of commission !

Accepted: Union, Denison ($80K scholarship), Clark, Syracuse, UMN, UCF

Going to Clark. Never would have picked it, but he’s happy as a pig in poop!
