Does anyone have any firsthand knowledge about Wittenberg University in OH or Knox College in IL? Any specifics, esp about the “Jewish Culture Club” at WU & the “Hillel Club” at Knox, would be appreciated.

jym - I saw that last night. I do think at this point - the family needs closure and they need answers. I guess I am hoping that the remains are hers. I can’t imagine that they still believe she is alive more than a year later.

While identifying the remains would bring some closure to the family, deep in my heart of hearts I don’t think that the mystery of her disappearance will ever truly be resolved…with the wall of silence that has been created around her sphere of influence at IU, it will probably be decades before the truth is actually revealed about that night…breaks my heart still today…

Help please! Has anyone’s students taken a study skills online class? Not in as much a test prep, but a true study skills/organization/how to be a better student class?

^^There was another thread in the parents forum that discussed this and provided a link to online resources through Loyola of MD or Chicago (I think?)…I will look and see if I saved it…

here it is:

Thanks Rodney! That’s a great start. I actually need a course for high school credit. Youngest has some flops freshman year and we would like to show some how that we did more than chalk it up to a bad year, as well as actually learn from the mistakes.

Florida Virtual Schools has one that is open to all students

Thank you Pennylane! Exactly what I was hoping for.

Glad to be able to help. Throwing my hat into the ring of Jewish 2013 grads. I am not focused on “stats”- as we can decide the academic match, but I am mostly looking for a holistic fit for DD. She is pre-vet and we have considered the state schools that have access to animal science programs. The other possibility is getting the pre reqs at any college and thanks for info on UAB. We have not investigated the smaller LAC’s much and I would like to learn more about them. DD is a serious student- so academics is important, but so is having friends and the fit of a school. Many schools combine pre med and pre vet, and while that is not an academic concern, the personality mix is important- are the students compatible or are they cut throat with each other? The Ohio schools look interesting- Ohio Wesleyan, Wooster, Denison…but we are open to learning about more schools on the eastern half of the US We have looked at Elon and one would think there is plenty of farm land nearby to get experience with but we don’t know much about that yet. I would not have considered Delaware if I had not seen this thread- thanks. I would like to take her to see some of the smaller LAC’s so she can get a feel for large school vs small schools. She is also very actively Jewish and needs enough of a Hillel to be part of.
We do check the Hillel website but it is not nearly as informative as hearing about it from the students at the school… unless of course there is no Hillel and that would probably not be a good fit.
I would appreciate any feedback about schools from parents looking as well as those who are already in the colleges mentioned here- about how your students are doing, are they happy, and if they know anything about pre-vet clubs. DD will also contact the schools herself, but the personal student and parent info here is priceless. Thanks.

Hello all! It’s so great to hear from the 2012-ers with all the excitement about shopping and roommate assignments, etc. OTOH, I’m ready to shop! On the other hand, I keep thinking about how we only has S for one more year. Thinking about “This might be one of the last times we get do X with him”. Then I remind myself, no one will leave the back door wide open at night or the mayo on the counter all day when no one is home… :o

We have his app in at Bama and all but the essay for RIT. We’re just waiting for the high school registrar to get back to work to send out transcripts. We also had some great photos made last week. They won’t be usable for yearbook photos, but they are nice to have going into senior year.

I’ve also been working on getting his t-shirt quilt together. I cringed when I had go out and buy new Superhero t-shirts only to cut them up. But I don’t think I can steal those from his drawer without his knowing.

It’s so great to be able to come here and get caught up on all the updates. Wishing everyone a happy and safe month ahead of launch time.

Momom21: You have an app in already? Wow. Impressive. Going to get on my DS to do his EC essay this weekend (should be easy, but you know how it is with teenagers who don’t like to write!) and finalize other common app essay. I don’t think there’s anyone at our HS to submit anything over the summer but, in August, I will sit with DS to go through apps, start online accounts (including common app) and get as much done as we can.

I also want to organize a special graduation gift that is personalized, but I am not a quilter…thinking about something more in the shutterfly area, perhaps with notes from his teachers throughout the years (many of whom I got to know and see around town a lot). He won’t appreciate it now, but he might think it is fun to have down the road (in decades?). “My crazy mother…”

What nice gift ideas! Aren’t we all crazy mothers to them? They will appreciate the quilt/memory book very much in years to come.

@pennylane- when you mentioned pre-vet I immediately thought of Penn State. Is that school on your radar?

[Animal Sciences and Pre-Vet Studies — Future Students — Penn State College of Ag Sciences](<a href=“Academics — Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences”>Academics — Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences)

I saw elsewhere that you mentioned Delaware Valley College. This is a very small school located in Doylestown PA. I had never heard of it before this year when we happened to drive by when we spent the day in that area. It looks like they do have animal programs but you may want to inquire further about their acceptance rate for vet schools, given that it seems somewhat unknown (even to me, having lived in Philly for 30 years).

You might also want to investigate whether there are schools that have a program where undergrads can get pre-acceptance to vet school see this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/pre-vet-veterinary-medicine/1088244-undergrad-schools-agreements-w-vet-schools.html

there are some other threads on CC that discuss pre-vet and you might also try PMing some of the parents who have gone through this process with their students http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/401342-daughter-received-early-conditional-admission-vet-school.html

Momom2 & LINY, I’m impressed and envious…are your kids just naturally motivated to begin the app process or is there some magical carrot-dangling going on? Saying “tick-tock goes the clock” or “the early bird gets the worm” just doesn’t seem to spur on my DD. Getting concerned…

Anyone know anything about Wittenberg University or Knox College?

@LuvMomN8ur- a great motivator is having an outside third party nonparent) involved in the process…last year my D met with her SAT tutor (who also assists with the college app process) to brainstorm her common app essay and short answer topics after which she had a “deadline” to follow up with her first drafts for comments.

In my experience, it was worth spending the $$ as it eliminated my having to remind (others might say nag?!) my D to work on the essay (and when parents do the reminding it often has the reverse effect of making the student procrastinate even more). Having an outside party is also helpful for SAT prep, where sessions are regularly scheduled and “homework” is assigned and must be completed by the next session. Again, I thought it was money well spent and helped preserve a healthy parent-child relationship!

My son had to write 2 college essays for English class which was a pain with everything else due in June, but now he has an essay done which works for the common app (topic of yr choice), so he probably only will have to do supplements, the app, and some guidance forms, I believe.
He has about 6 schools on his list, 2 local, 4 away from home. I know it’s a short list, but none is a reach. A reach school wouldn’t be a good fit for a kid for whom school stress is overwhelming.
Btw, does anyone else feel discomfited by the pressure to apply ED? One of the schools he is considering, Muhlenberg, has a very clear preference for admitting ED apps over regular. I understand their perspective (yield), but I want DS to have plenty of time to make such an important decision, especially at such a young age. I would rather he decide in April with all the possible aid packages in front of him. He doesn’t have any strong favorite yet (to the complete exclusion of the other schools).

Not really any great motivator other than “You will do this, or else!” His dad and I told him all last year that Jr. year was the work year and Sr. year he would be able to take it a bit easier. Mr. Minimal effort didn’t work terribly hard last year, but did manage to reach the ACT goal in April. So he doesn’t have to worry about that. In his English class, the kids had to draft a resume, so the EC’s were all ready outlined. We also started a list of what he REALLY liked about RIT beginning with our first visit, so that made the “Why RIT?” essay a bit easier to write.

He’s only applying to 2 schools and not using the common app. Bama was all demographic stuff, no essay, so it was easy. I gave him a deadline for his RIT essay since I want my college’s admissions person and his English teacher to read through it as soon as they get back into their offices and before the rush hits with other students. This way, everything is in, and he can sit back and relax and enjoy his senior year. He may still have to fill out an Honors essay and some scholarship essays as we go. Also, since he’s not working many days this summer, he has the time.

I’ve not made a quilt since the little baby one I made while we were waiting to travel for my daughter (from China). But there are lots of good directions on the internet and my mom is also helpful. So, far I’ve only secretly requisitioned his t-shirts, cut them up, and ironed on the backing. The sewing will be a bit more challenging.

at Muhlenberg, they definitely favor ED, but you have until Feb 15 to decide to convert your RD application to ED. It is my understanding that they will give you a good read on merit and/or financial aid before your commit to ED.

Neither of my D’s went down the ED path. A lot of my D2’s friends did ED and that worked for them. In a way she envied them because she found it hard to decide among all her acceptances in the end, but I think that her final choice was different than what she wold have picked in November.

My S is doing ED at RIT. His choices were limited where he could apply (by his major and which school on my tuition exchange network offered it). After looking around, he truly felt RIT was the place for him and Bama constituted an excellent second place (guaranteed scholarship, so a great back-up).

If it were me, I would have bugged my folks to take me to every college we could see. But, he seems confident and zen with his choices, so it makes applying ED really easy. He tends not to waiver or flip-flop once he has his mind set.

I could easily see how it would SO not be the right way to go for many kids, though.
