Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

pamom59, Dean J did acknowledge in the thread started by jara123 in April in the UVa Forum (Surprised and Put Off) that there was religious imagery in some of the stained glass windows. maya54 brought the same issue up again in the Parents Forum with the Colleges You Crossed off thread . jara123 and maya54 have the exact same birthdate in their online profile(October 27,1960).Hmm,wonder if it’s the same person? Now this is being brought up in a 3rd thread, this one. Dean J may not even be aware this is being discussed here or may feel she has already responded adequately.

very interesting! will be curious to see of Dean J further responds since others may not have viewed the older thread.

AP score came on mail today. Very happy with result.

I’m happy for you Shulamit!

Take a break from college stuff and check these out. I just took the time to look through some of the newsletters I have been receiving in my email from the TAMU Hillel. Up until now I had just read this newsletter for the college Hillel news but they include some links that are real gems! Enjoy! Shabbat Shalom

Thanks Spectrum! Interesting article on Columbus. I have heard that theory before.

Congrats, Shulamit! Thrilled for you & yours!

Congrats to those who are happy with the AP scores they have received,

No score report here as of yet. And S2 threw away the student pack booklet with the contact info - because his test proctor told them they did not need to save it! Sigh. Hopefully it will show up in the next few days.

Rockvillemom - we got AP scores today. You should probably have them Monday. Absolutely thrilled with the results!

Oh, could smack D1 she didn’t put down the college she will be attending because she was worried she didn’t do well. It wouldn’t have mattered, she has scores from last year that needed to be sent. So now she did well and I have to pay $15 to send the scores!

Almost done with college shopping. Just a few things that I think one last Target run will accomplish! How is everyone else doing?

I need to gear up for D2, she is starting her Junior year…not sure if I have it in me right now. Maybe after D1 is moved into the dorm.

My D2 and I have not done any pre-college shopping yet…I’m feeling more relaxed about the process the second time around, plus it also helps to know that D2 will be only 15 min away from home so if there is something forgotten or that needs to be purchased it will not be a big issue. That said, I am starting a list of things we need to buy:

laptop (found out that school has a discount program through which we can purchase)
bedding (hmm…she can’t seem to find anything she likes better than the old stuff she is currently using on her bed at home that is full of holes)
new backpack (though she says she wants to keep on using the one she’s had since 5th grade- maybe I can duct tape up the holes lol)
clothes
school supplies
etc.

D2 just took her placement tests (today was the last day) and has orientation Mon/Tues; I’m hoping that it will get her in the mood to go shopping for all the stuff she needs!

Did receive the AP score report in the mail today - but somehow it was not marked to be sent to Elon - although he swears he filled the info in on the answer sheet - so just spent the $15 to have the scores sent.

We did a Target/BB&B run last week - pretty good in that dept. So much easier with boys - although he wanted to come with me - he spent less than two seconds per item - so not sure why he needed to bother. Let’s just say that having his stuff match and coordinate was not a priority.

On a more interesting note - he has mentioned several times that he wants to go clothing shopping before leaving for school. Apparently the shorts and t-shirts that were the staple of his hs wardrobe need some upgrading. Should prove interesting. I’m not even sure where to take him! The trendy teen stores at the mall scare me - I may need to do some advance scouting at Kohls. Old Navy? Gap? Macy’s? What’s a good store for a teenaged boy that won’t deafen or bankrupt me?

Here Aeorpostle is usually reasonably priced and trendy. American Eagle is a favorite but sales are a must. We started shopping at these stores because they and Target are among the few stores that have pants and shorts that will fit lean young men. Most other stores we have searched the waist size begins at 30.

(I haven’t found either of these stores deafening)

My sons love JCrew…if there is an outlet near you, the prices are good. And my boys know to go straight to the discount tables/racks in the back!

Thanks for the congrats and the same to everyone else! Good info on the slim waisted pants. DS is very slim and has a hard time finding pants. I will check out those stores for him.
BTW, how does it work with sending AP scores? He is a rising senior and has only taken one AP (so far). Does he send it to all colleges to which he is applying, or just to the one he will attend after he deposits?

Do you only have to send AP scores in after taking them senior year?

& Please somebody answer mine (if you can, of course):
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1365128-university-miami-scholarships.html?highlight=university+of+miami

You generally only SEND AP scores to the college you will be attending - but you can REPORT the scores on the Common Application or any other college application. You will notice when you have graduated from hs and are sending your scores to your college - they go to the attention of the academic dean or the equivalent - not to admissions - so there is no point in sending AP scores from junior year exams to multiple colleges - just self-report on the applications.

DH and I just came back from a trip to the mall - a little advance scouting. The funny thing was that every store we went into - from Old Navy to Gap to American Eagle to PacSun - was showing the exact same stuff - kind of a preppy look of baggy shorts - usually plaid, t-shirts and button down shirts worn over - also hoodies and flip flops were big. Must be the preppy uniform for college-aged teens. Still much easier than shopping for girls - I am not complaining!

Thanks RVM. That was very helpful.

Just checking in to say to “HI” to everyone! Looks like the 2012 parents are already college shopping - it really is creeping up on us. I also feel a bit more relaxed this time around, which is a good thing for S2 - he already thinks I am a total control freak!

He got his room and roomie assignment last week, and that actually struck me pretty hard. He really is leaving and we really will have an empty nest…very strange.

Hope everyone is having a great summer and best of luck with the college shopping and of course, the “launch”!

I, too, am sending a big mid summer greeting to you all…we’ve had some very nice vacations already and look forward to another big one in August. S2 is fully esconced in his summer WPI program for 3 weeks…

Mdmomfromli…I’m not sure I’m ready yet to begin much with my rising high school Junior yet either! I know we will need to look at colleges, but unlike S1, many of the colleges on our list we can do in day trips…but I will try to get organized by the time they go back to school in Sept!

RVM: I go everywhere to buy clothes for my boys. Whomever is having decent sales. Sometimes they do well at American Eagle, sometimes it’s Kohl’s. I will say that even though I personally don’t shop at JC Penney for myself…I find that my boys like the men’s dept. clothes there. My S1 is into the preppy look and have found nice shorts and button down shirts for him really reasonably priced. I just bought my H some things at Lord & Taylor but even with the double sale it was still more expensive than what I’m willing to spend for teenagers! :)

Enjoy this sunny weather and time with your kids! All too soon it’ll be back to school time again. Not sure I want to think about it yet!

Hi everyone. Dd got her AP score back for studio art and it was very good. She is just back from a music trip to Europe and we leave in less than 4 weeks. We have made one dorm shopping run, and will head back today. I am looking for a cheap fridge with a separate freezer, but they all start at $150 or so, so I may have to bite the bullet. Also need a locking file cabinet, but otherwise, we will be in good shape. The kids at dd’s school don’t get dorm assignments until 2 weeks before starting, so it is really hard to figure out exactly what she will need.

I find dd is now chomping at the bit and she is starting to separate, by saying things like, “mom, I know how hard this is going to be on you” “mom, you better be ready” etc. I told her not to worry, that I will not stand in front of her dorm room and cry for her to come home with us!! But, I may crawl into bed when I get home for a day or so…only dh will have to deal with that, not dd!

Good luck to all the launchers. And best of luck to all the 2013’s who will be really starting this journey!

Potentially sad update on the Lauren Spierer disappearance at Indiana. A skull has been found. Awaiting identification.
