Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

socaldad: Tried to PM you but your box is full. I was at UD for 24 hours and it was pretty insane. Maybe we will meet up another time!

Glad everyone is doing well!

Socaldad: I’m glad to hear that your D’s move-in went well. Delaware has a beautiful campus and seems to attract very nice kids. Best of luck to your D and all the others in the class of 2016.

RVM and Phillyartmom: It took me a long time to adjust for grocery shopping for 2. Then I had to readjust this summer. Last year I kept throwing away spoiled bananas, and all summer we’ver been running out. Try to focus on the benefits of the empty nest like less laundry.

HouTXmom: I agree that this is one of the most supportive forums on CC.

Bronfman Center, otherwise known as Hillel, at NYU is amazing, as it should with 6000 Jewish kids. From services, Friday night dinners that are usual to unusual, classes that are formal and informal, theater programs, art programs, acapella groups and lots of couches kids crash on all day-there’s something for everyone. I hope she gets involved as it all sounds great in move in day

Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using CC

Hey everyone - So strange to read about “move-ins” going so well… I feel like these same parents were so recently visiting schools/posting reviews, etc. Sounds like things have been going so well. For some reason, socaldad brought tears to my eyes…goodbyes can be hard. Good luck to all the students just beginning college. And to their parents entering a new phase.

Mazal tov! to all the new college parents!!!

Thanks Champs2004.

All continues to be great. Classes start today. Waiting for a report…I am a little blue. My W is very sad.

^socal: the new normal as we call it around here; I do recall last year it got better after the beginning of October or so; hang in there…

Socal, I am having a bad day too. Went to Target today, and realized while I was there that I am usually there with dd or for dd. I just welled up with tears.

On the other side, the kids went back to the dorms yesterday and we got a call from our friends where dd went for the evac. He said that he could not believe how much the kids had bonded in 5 days and that the three at his house were skyping with the rest of the dorm and that everyone was exchanging pictures and just having a great time together. He also said that he asked all three kids that ended up going to his house with my dd if they were happy with their choice of schools and all of them said they made the absolute right choice and that they loved it!

Great things for a sad parent to hear!

Good luck to all. I am hoping that I get better soon. My dh and I have two trips planned in September that I would not have been able to do if dd were at school here. One to the Cape and another to the Greenbrier Hotel in WV (business trip for dh). Luckily, I can schedule my cooking clients around these! Also found a great organization to volunteer with, writing grants and also helping disadvantaged kids with college stuff. This should help keep me out of trouble!

I hate to bring down the positive vibe on the thread, but I have to post this article about a horrific anti-semetic incident at Michigan State. I am just sick over this.

[Michigan State Student Brutally Beaten in Anti-Semitic Attack | Jewish & Israel News Algemeiner.com](Michigan State Student Brutally Beaten in Alleged Anti-Semitic Attack - Algemeiner.com)

Oh this is awful…

I have no words to adequately express my shock and horor. Thank you for sharing this article. It is so important that we remember these horrible incidents still take place. We can never be complacent. Prayers for the young man and his family. I can only hope the perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted quickly and vigorously.

Read a few more articles. Michigan State quick to clarify that it happened off campus, at a private party. Young man is recovering and hopes to return to classes next week. It appears that he was at this party or in front of the house by himself. No one came to his aid. Just a reminder to us all to remind our kids, even the boys, to travel in a group at night.

Thank you for posting this article - horrific. But news like this needs to be shared. I intend to spread the word to my non-CC friends with college kids. So awful to read. Prayers to the boy and his family.

I have visited MSU. East Lansing is a college town and students can live off campus in surrounding apartments. Of course, the university can’t control what happens off campus- so it is the domain of the local police- and we don’t know if the perpetrators were students or not. MSU has a large Jewish population. Yes, this is a reminder to all kids to be in a group at night. It shocks me that the witnesses did not intervene. It’s just horrible…

^^Yikes. My sister met her H at a Michigan State Hillel dinner many years ago. What amazes me is that NO ONE came to his aid and just watched. What’s that all about? Hopefully the internal wounds will heal as quickly as the outer wounds. None of this will stop unless the ignorant are taught and educated…really a disgusting event.

On a happier note, glad to read that everyone’s move-ins have been mostly smooth and stress free. I cannot BELIEVE S1 is starting sophomore year and S2 will now be a h.s. junior, oy!

My food bill took a beating this summer with S1 home and friends coming over & snacking, and snacking, and snacking…that’s okay, though…I feel like many of them are my extended sons! ;)

Just wanted t share another article on the attack at Michigan State:

[Police doubt MSU attack was hate crime, have possible suspect | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com](http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20120828/METRO/208280410/1409/METRO/MSU-student-recovering-after-reported-anti-Semitic-assault)

I am puzzled. Why are the police leaning away from considering this a hate crime? And the attack by stapler - the assailants just happened to have a stapler with them? Very odd situation.

Yes, I am astounded that they don’t consider this a hate crime considering the circumstances. There did not seem to be any other motive- there is no mention of robbery or any other reason… and why would they staple his mouth?
The incident enough is upsetting, but denying the nature of it? I don’t get that at all.

Just saw this update on the ABC News website:

It would sicken me to think he fabricated the details of the fight.

I have been following this too, RVM, and had the same thought when I read this… I would hate to think he fabricated the story, and yet, on the other hand, also hate to think it is true.
I also wonder if someone is covering up something to protect the perpetrators. We don’t know any motives on either side.
I guess we will have to wait until more details come out of the story. In any case, he was beat up in a college setting with people watching and not intervening to help. Outnumbered by his attackers and badly injured. There is no circumstance that I can think of where this is excusable for anyone.

The situation in Michigan is very disturbing. I wonder if the police are questioning the motive to avoid bad publicity.
