Colleges for the Jewish “B” student now has almost 1000 pages…the next subject could be for the “Colleges for the Jewish “A-” student”?

^ grade inflation?

Lol grade inflation- sure why not. Everyone gets A’s here. I think the board has evolved beyond the grades part at this point anyway- into a group of informed and supportive members for a large range of students. I’m grateful for it as it has given me many ideas for colleges to discuss with my D.
For the midwest parents, Michigan State has a large Hillel and Kosher dining in one hall on campus as far as I know. It has a smaller science college Lyman Briggs that seems to have a smaller college feel to it. I don’t know about the admission policy.
I know of one student at University of Puget Sound whose family is very active in their Jewish community, so perhaps there is an active Jewish student group there.

^^^You are right Pennylane:

We seem to have evolved and are inclusive to all grade levels with emphasis on Jewish “B” students in particular…although the discussions of what constitutes a “B” student have lasted several pages at times! ;)

My sister met her H at a Michigan State Hillel dinner many years ago…he was working on a second bachelor’s at the time and she on a Master’s…

ST: Good luck with upcoming college visits.

Hope all this year’s freshmen are doing well and are fully entrenched in their respective schools…

phillyartmom: let me know if you need a traveling buddy to visit your D in warm, sunny Fla, maybe around Feb. or so?! :D

Ok, ideas needed here…I have a true B student who is happy being a B student and doesn’t care about grades…very different from his siblings. He’s a junior and truly his parameters so far are engineering that’s a big part of the campus, big on sports and he’d rather not be in freezing weather. He has a 504, diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia but is in all honors classes so I guess that makes him doing really well under his circumstances. He says he knows what he wants, to work at Disney as an engineer or creator of their different “worlds”. So on his very short list is UCF, USC (his cousins went) or Purdue (his brother is there). I think he can get in UCF but I am highly suspect of the others. Any good ideas out there???

Choc Chip, will keep it in mind! :)

fourkidsmom, your son’s interests are out of my areas of expertise, but if he is interested in digital graphics and animation, I’d guess there are very specialized kinds of programs. My son has a friend who is gifted and has some set of LDs. Barely finished HS but was at age 16 making a near adult salary helping make political videos and is now at SCAD, which I assume is in South Carolina. Great kid.

fourkidsmom, I just stumbled on this thread in the engineering forum. I thought you may not have seen it and may want to follow it although it is a little ahead of where you are right now. I skimmed it and it sounds like going to school in Florida could be a plus because if its proximity to Disney. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/engineering-majors/1357798-difficulty-getting-into-entertainment-theme-park-industry.html

@LINYMOM - Just a heads up regarding school visits from something I just heard. If your son is really interested in Lehigh, you should do some research on school yield rate. This may not be the case for Lehigh, but some schools, like GW, want you to show them love for admissions. A friend’s daughter visited GW early on in her college search and knew that it was her number one choice, so she didn’t bother going back closer to app time. She had great stats, and got into several schools that are ranked higher than GW, but was rejected from GW. She was very upset and her parents called admissions - they were surprised that GW was her number one choice because it wasn’t evident according to their standards - no recent visit and essay didn’t explicitly state GW is number one choice. Once they called and explained it was her number one, they did admit her. Go figure. They apparently want a high yield rate and assumed that she wouldn’t come if admitted. So, worthwhile looking into that to see if Lehigh is the same way. If so, waiting til admitted students day may backfire.

Liny- Maryversity raises a good point. Common data sets rate level of interest as Very Important, Important, Considered, Not Considered. GWU’s common data set says level of interest is “considered.” Lehigh’s says level of interest is “important.” Start packing.

I haven’t read upstream back before Saturday, but want to reiterate…

If you are within driving distance of Lehigh, they expect you to visit before the application is reviewed…

And the anecdotal evidence about GW has also proven true the past few years…have seen the above situation over and over again…

For the 2.5-2.8 students, does anyone have any input regarding Ohio University in Athens or the University of Cincinnati? I have heard that they are both actively seeking OOS students.

For Michigan State, as I had mentioned upstream, our local public has 100% admission rate at all GPA levels if application is submitted early (like now)…

Lehigh absolutely needs you to show the love. Their admissions counselors all stress this. If you’re in the region, a visit is a must. Also check in at their booth at college fairs.

Fourkidsmom- If Disney is his goal, then the Florida location makes sense. Outside of Florida-have you looked at Drexel? There seems to be majors in his interests- engineering, computers, graphic design, that could be applicable to Disney or beyond. They have a coop program that looks interesting as he could explore different career options- and who knows- they may have one in Disney.

Fourkidsmom: Maybe Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota, FL or Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, GA or Atlanta.

Ohio U does get a lot of chatter here on CC as a potential OOS destination.
But, according to the school’s CDS, only 11% of incoming freshmen are from out of state.

Also, a 2.5-2.8 seems near the lower end of the scale for OU.
The average listed GPA is 3.3.

The campus seems nice enough (they have their own nine-hole golf course ;)) but I’ve never been very impressed with Athens though others have raved about it.

@LINYMOM I could be wrong but I do believe that Lehigh is one of those schools where level of interest is judged by whether a student is applying ED. If Lehigh is truly his first choice, he should consider applying ED. Looking at the most recent common data set I saw online, they accepted 561/878 or 64% of their ED applicants. That contrasts to about 30% of non-ED applicants. The total freshman class was 1207 meaning that 46% of the class is made up of students who applied and were accepted ED.

If he is not going to apply ED, I think that you could delay the visit until after midyear grades are in.

Thank you all for Lehigh input. I know all about Lehigh wanting you to visit and how they are about yield. My friend’s DD applied to Lehigh as a safety and, although she did visit, she was waitlisted as they clearly were protecting their yield. She was accepted EA to MIT and had no intention of going to Lehigh. Of course my friend is not on CC so she didn’t really get this but, in the end, didn’t really care.

As for my DS, Lehigh is not his #1 but it’s in his top 2 or 3. We are about 2.5 hours away so we can make the senior open house a last minute decision (week before). According to our HS Naviance, it is a match, but you never know. I’m not going to stress over it. But I will push him to get that app done and submitted this month.

As for Disney, they do offer internships. Another friend’s daughter did it (although I’m not sure what she did was in any way related to her area of interest) and she was at a college here on Long Island.

Here are links to student opportunities at Disney:

I happened to look at last admissons season’s numbers on the NYT site and noticed that Elon, Lafayette, and Lehigh waitlisted more applicants than they rejected. I tought that was very odd.

Hi Fourkidsmom:

My S2 has a friend that will be attending Florida Institute of Technology, in Melbourne, I believe, and that is not that far from Orlando. It’s a “B” school, could be rolling admissions, not sure, but website could tell you more, and their acceptance rate is pretty high. Of course Engineering is top major of the school…don’t know anything about it, but again, try to find their website for additional info.

Hope that helps a bit :)

Where is everyone today? Dancing with the Torahs?
Or was that last week? Too many holidays to keep track of!!!
