Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Great news Vitrac, she has some great choices already!

I have been watching the news and thinking of all of you on the East coast and I hope you are all safe and life gets back to normal very soon.

I had a bit of a reminder of how important it is to check up on things with regard to the college ap process. My older son is about to graduate from undergrad and is working on getting all of his transcripts sent out for his next level of education. He took a dual credit course in his freshman year of HS but found he needed to get that transcript sent in along with the one from study abroad and his college. After faxing the required paperwork and instructions along with his phone number and mine last week I thought that since it is a local school I would just call the college for him to verify that the fax was received. What I learned was that since he was in hs when he took the class a transcript could not go out until the college received a sealed HS transcript that proved he graduated from HS. There was nothing on the website or in conversations that both of us had with the school that indicated that this was required. The college had received the fax but was not going to do anything with it if I had not called (even though they had our phone numbers.) Today I got a sealed copy of the hs transcript (gotta love our HS’s registrar) and hand delivered it to the college along with all of the information that had already been faxed. You can be sure there will be a few more follow up calls until we are sure that the transcript went out. Clearly you just can’t assume anything!

Spectrum- glad you worked that out. Another thing I found to be careful about is that the college won’t release a transcript if there are any outstanding fees. While one may think that’s not an issue if tuition and other expenses have been paid, something like an outstanding library fee of a few dollars can hold it up. So check that all payments are up to date when requesting a transcript.
I hope everyone in Sandy’s path is safe and dry.

Congrats to Vitrac and your D!

The storm was not as bad as expected in our area. We had 10 inches of rains and howling winds yesterday and last night, but never lost power. I hope everyone else fared well also.

Pennylane, are you still planning that trip to NE later this week? My D in Boston reported that the sun was shinning and the T was running today. Things should be okay if you can get there.

Yes, we called and everything is in order, so we are on the way!

I am glad many areas were spared and sorry for the devastation in NYC and the coasts. Glad the kids are safe.

Congratulations Vitrac! My D1 is a sophomore at Tulane and absolitely loves it. That is great that your D heard so early.

Found a Panera with power, so the phone is charging. No damage to my house in Long Island, though many downed trees in the neighborhood with some homes and cars damaged. We live 10 miles inland so no flooding, but I know others were not as fortunate. We just have to deal with blackout. According to radio, 90% of Long Island is without power. I’m in that group, so I haven’t seen any video of the storm. We expect to be dark for a week or more. My son at Alabama can’t believe the irony.

Hope our cc friends are ok.

Glad you are OK and no damage to your house. What a mess this was. Hope you get power soon.

congrats to Vitrac!! so reassuring to hear to early - great work!

Sorry to hear about those affected by Sandy. Other than losing Internet and the phone for 12 hours, no complaints here.

I have heard that many schools extended early decision deadlines.

Hi everyone. We made it w/o loss of power, but both streets on either side of us were out, so we have been shower central for our friends. Vitrac congratulations on Tulane! I hope everyone who was in the storm’s path are ok. My heart is so sad for the Jersey Shore and other shore areas and for NYC. I hope all the kids in those areas are ok.

I also use the yarzheit candles during the storm. I always say a little prayer to my mom and now my dad before I light them, but they work great and you can put them on and not really worry about them if they are in a sink!

Take care everyone, be safe.

Also, I know schools are postponing deadlines for apps around here, although I don’t know the specifics. Good luck.

We are in the same boat as Chardo. No power, cell or internet service. Lots of large, downed trees in our neighborhood, but we only lost one very large branch (that somehow didn’t hit our power lines). My in-laws, two towns away, have power, so my DH has been here for two days logging in to work, which is really busy (he is IT director for a national organization; their NYC office is in the evac zone and Con Ed shut down their power). Not sure when he will get back in to work.

DS and I are here now, and were here for part of yesterday. He finished one of his essays and we will submit another college app now. Of course, this has enabled me to keep checking app status at Tulane (no word yet).

Pretty inconvenient for us, but that’s all. I know plenty of people in my town with several feet of water in their house. The local ABC reporter was here yesterday too. We ran into them at Dunkin Donuts where everyone was trying to get hot coffee; reporter was thrilled to interview some HS girls who were flooded out of their houses.

Going to take a long time here… I doubt DS will have school all week. I will check in here when I can.

Hope everyone else in the northeast is faring ok too!

Glad to hear that everyone is okay and finding places to charge phones and get coffee.

Good suggestion on the yartzheit candles. I never would have thought of that.

Take care, everyone. I hope those without power stay warm.

Congrats Vitrac!

We feel very lucky we only lost power for 1 day. Quarter ends tomorrow, of course DS did not do major summer project so was up all night working once power came back at 7:11 pm.

I hope all of those effected by Sandy are safe and power returns soon.

Good news from Tulane! DS was accepted! Now the wait for the letter to find out if there’s any merit aid coming. I am so excited for him!

(And we got our power, internet, and cable back last night too!)

Congrats Linymom!!! (On all accounts!)

awesome news, Linymom. Congratulations!!!

LINY…I’m not sure which you are more excited about, Tulane, or getting back power/internet/cable…but I am happy for you on both accounts. And mazal tov to your son!

Fabulous news LINYMOM - all of it! Good luck with the merit aid as well.

congrats LINYmom, and I am so glad that you are back in business.

Power back, no Internet, phone,or cable yet

Congratulations Linymom! Great news!
