Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

I hope all of you in the line of the storm stay safe and dry.

rossnrachael: I have never done an ED application but in my experience with different schools the rules about deadlines vary from school to school regarding whether it is the postmark or received by date that they are referring to with a deadline. However I have made phone calls to admissions offices about items missing from an application and concern about missing a deadline and they have always been good about explaining what is going on. It isn’t all that unusual for items to get misfiled, that happened this past year with my S’s SAT scores. It also sometimes takes a little time for all of the different pieces of the application to get put together. If you know that something was sent in and it somehow didn’t make it to your S’s file stay on top of it. In my experience with the schools I have dealt with they have been understanding and worked with me (however with a large school this has taken more than one phone call and some persistance.) Of course it is always better for your kiddo to make the call but colleges seem to undrestand that kids are in class and can’t make phone calls.

For those of you with students in DC:

My sons live in an off campus apartment building. Last year when everyone else lost power they were fine because their building has back up generators–so they never missed a beat.

If the storm should hurt DC, and any of your students need a place to go, just let me know. Last time my boys had 11 people camping out in their 650 SF.

Rossnrachel: Colleges have different policies about when everything needs to be in, but most give some leeway on the transcripts and recommendations. There is often a time lag in the admissions office before the mailed items are logged into the online system. Sometimes items are misplaced or don’t get logged in properly, so if they were sent a few weeks ago, I would recommend calling the admissions office to ask about them. I did that for one of my D’s applications and the missing items were miraculously found.

Good luck to the students working to meet November 1st deadlines. I hope everyone stays safe during the storm. Socaldad: I’m glad your D could go to a friend’s house. It would have been a long trip for her to go home.

RE: Deadlines. Check for each school. I know the UMass/Amherst website specified that EA apps must be in by Nov. 1 and HS records by Nov. 20. Also, there is frequently a lag. My DS’s GC sent HS transcript/recs to Tulane on 9/19. The online account was only updated to “completed application” yesterday (10/26). I had GC call about a week or two ago to make sure.

socaldad: Glad your DD has a place to go and feel safe. My DD said to me yesterday, “Why would I go home? It’s going to be just as bad there.” She is happy to ride it out with her friends. I’m not worried about those new brick dorms up on north campus. And I remember seeing photos online of the Tulane students hanging out in the dorm hallways during their most recent hurricane. As I told DD last night, it will just be very inconvenient and she should just be prepared. If she came home, I would have no idea how she’d get back anyway, with all the transportation problems that are expected. If there are extended problems, more than a few days, she and her roommate go to the roommate’s house in Wilmington. But I don’t see that happening.

We had a large snowstorm years ago and our local college (a religious school- no Jews there) lost power for a few days. We had a couple of college students camping out in our guest room and several families did too. I hope all the kids are safe and well cared for by the school and local communities if necessary.
Thanks for the BeastieBoys and the common app info. Hopefully D won’t need to do that but it’s good to know how.
We are planning a college tour at the end of this week. D has not been able to do this yet and we are looking forward to it. I expect the schools will cancel if it is a problem. I hope it’s not nearly as bad as predicted.
I am wishing for everyone to stay safe.

I sent my kid to hurricane and tornado-battered Alabama, and here we are in NY prepping for trouble. He’s enjoying sunny 60’s all week. Southern fried irony.

Stay safe, everyone.

We are right in the path too, and I thought about your dd Socal. All of our friends at UD are staying, I don’t know why. We have brought in the lawn and porch stuff and tomorrow will bring in flowers. Cars are gassed up, but really only so we can run them to charge our phones if electricity is out for a long time. It is interesting because will all the hype, people do not seem freaked. No lines at the gas station, there were still batteries at the store. The only think not available seems to be generators!

I find it ironic that I sent my kid to Florida and she avoided the storm and here we sit! Good luck to everyone in the path. Hold on tight!

So many Delaware students are from Philly, NJ and NY. Why should they go home and hang out with their parents with no electricity? That’s no fun!

This is getting real. Jim Cantore is in NYC.

A break from hurricane news: D2 got into Tulane!!!

Woo Hoo! So happy for you!

Mazel Tov Vitrac!! I’m thinking of people in the NE with Sandy and hope everyone is safe.

Our long planned college tour to the NE later this week is not looking hopeful. We’re still wishing Sandy is a plan for the worse, turns out the best scenario. The pictures and news are concerning.

I know it was nice to get that acceptance today!

Vitrac, mazal tov! Your daughter already has excellent choices! And so early !!

As far as hurricane stuff…I sit here and worry, my kids all think it’s primo party time.

Talked to the two who live together in DC…they think they will be immune, because last year when DC lost power, their building didn’t. (maybe it has its own generator?) So, a bunch of friends are crowding in thinking they will be lucky again this time. The price of admission was a bag of supplies. I think there are 11 kids planning on sleeping in 650 SF. At the moment, they are making chili.

Talked to S and (pregnant) DIL in Boston…they moved their car off the street into a parking garage–smart kids! They laid in all of the necessaries and not so necessaries. They were somewhat hoping to have a couple of quiet days cocooning together…not to be, DIL’s sisters showed up to stay with them instead of their own apartment a few blocks away. They also brought a lot of goodies with them, including what were my DIL’s favorite candles…the scent of which now makes her sick. Oh well.

Just a reminder for those who may lose power…that drawerful of yartzeit candles is a wonderful resource…those candles burn for a long time, and are relatively safe in their glass cups.

Hoping all of you --and all of our kids–stay safe through the storm, and that no one suffers more than minor inconvenience.

Vitrac, fabulous news, congratulations!

Power outages are the primary use for yahrtzeit candles in my house, keinahora. Maybe it seems macabre but it’s what my parents always used in a blackout and it just seems to make sense!

Although now that I’m seeing “flameless” tea lights advertised for Christmas decoration use, I’m thinking those seem safer. They’re LED, last forever. May have to get some for the future.

DP, that’s a good idea.

Sent D3 one of those flameless xmas light kits at school (no candles allowed) last year, and she was able to build a menorah out of them. Kosher both for religious purposes and dorm rules!

Chardo mentioned that Jim Cantore is in NYC. I just saw his update on television. The East River is flooding the subways in the lower East Side of NYC. I don’t think I have ever seen him that worried. The high tide is past but the winds from the southeast are pushing the water up the East River and into the city.

Congrats on Tulane Vitrac!

Congrats Vitrac. I believe this is or was a top choice. Correct?

Congrats Vitrac!
