Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

RVM,

As this thread pasts 15,000 posts and 1001 pages, I would like to say thanks for starting, persevering, and leading…

Why thank you! I’m not as involved as I used to be - but I do like to check in from time to time. The parents of the hs class of 2013 have it in great hands.

Congratulations LINYMOM and son!

Congrats to MOM24boys S on both acceptances!

Congrats to Mom24boys too.

Rockvillemom, Jewish rap sounds like a fun night. Ask your son to tell us who the rappers are- I’d like to know. I can think of two so far: Drake and Y-Love. Any others? We have some interesting Jewish rockers across the spectrum of observance. Although not rappers, 8th Day is talented. Of course there’s Matisyahu with his recent transformation, and Adam Lambert.

Drake has a nice voice- although the lyrics are hard for someone my age to hear. Rap’s not my favorite genre, but I like some of the wittier songs.

The Elon Hillel sounds wonderful. It’s really a nice school and has a gorgeous campus.

Congrats to everyone! Fun to follow along with all of you!

Congrats to Mom24boys and S on the 2 acceptances!

Mom24boys: Congrats on the acceptances! Great to have a couple in the bag now, right?

So exciting for everyone here…

Congrats Mom24boys!! Nice to hear hard work paying off!

Great news… hope to keep the good news coming for all of us on this thread… we’re off to a good start!!

RVM - thanks for sharing the info., and for checking up on us! How are your college students doing?

Thanks all, I thought I would be worrying less, but now it’s about 1st quarter grades. I found out he was failing a class a few wks ago, that has been taken care of now. This boy likes to turn every straight line into a roller coaster ride, I should be used to it by now. And I am so proud of how he is doing.

Soon it will be time to start thinking about DS 2 HS sophmore with no idea what he wants to do, just not STEM or a city school - so basically if school was on DS 1’s radars it is off DS 2. PSATs this year should give us someplace to start.

I have a question about the Common App. Is it acceptable to categorize activities such as “Community Service” “Sports” 'Music" and then in the description list some of them instead of individually picking among " School fund raiser" Nursing home volunteer" “Basketball team” “Swimming” “Oboe player” “School Musical” .

Can you categorize several awards into something like “Music Awards” “Academic Honors” instead of only listing single ones like “Honor Role” “Boosters” " Band Award" “All State”? Or it is better to list them individually and attach a resume?

If I were reading it, I’d prefer the category idea, since someone can have several activities in a category and earn several smaller awards in one area. It would also help show the student’s main interests if they did several things in one area, instead of listing just a few of them. It does not help to just pick something like “volunteer in nursing home” if a student did multiple community activities, or pick “best band player” if they had several equivalent music awards.

These are not the exact ones, but I am using generic ones as an example. Do the colleges have a preference?

I don’t know the answer to that. My DD had trouble with the CA. She ended up accidentally leaving off her VP position in TYG. She’s sending an e-mail correcting it to her ED school, but luckily she did not submit the CA to any other schools yet. I learned on another thread that can create alternative applications. A friend of hers sent the wrong essay to every one of her common app schools. Ugh.

Oh gosh the friend must be devastated. I hope the colleges are sympathetic to her. In that case, I hope she contacted them and they allowed her to make a correction. For a minor mistake like leaving something off, an e mail correction should be fine.
I’ve heard about making an alternative essay. I did not know about that until recently but it is good to have that option. The idea of filling everything in is not appealing, but it should go quickly this time. Good luck to her.

Just want to wish everyone who is in the path of this storm a safe week. If you have kids at colleges in the storm zone, I hope their colleges are taking all of the necessary precautions. Hopefully this hurricane will not live up to all of these dire predictions.

Thank you, RVM. We are directly in the path. All Halloween decorations coming down tomorrow! Also, we got a call from UD - they are encouraging all students to go home tomorrow and all on-campus events are cancelled through Monday (including classes). DD is staying. She went out tonight to get a flashlight, batteries, water, etc. So far, dining halls will be open. Good practice for me, with DS considering college in Miami and New Orleans… we are hurricane veterans though. As long as everyone puts safety first.

Hope everyone else stays safe over the next few days also!

Linymom,

Your daughter is more brave than mine. My d is going to her friends house in Pa. She thought it might be too depressing stuck in dorm with no electricity. Her entire floor is clearing out.

Pennylane - The Beastie Boys, I believe all 3 (Rip Adam Yauch).

Wishing everyone and their kids are safe!

Hi Everyone - haven’t dropped in a while. Been so stressed about applications. I feel like I’ve been on S’s back, but thankfully he has sent in an ED application. Does anyone know if the deadline is considered “met” based on post date? Online there is missing information for his application, but his gc assured him that she sent it. The online portion is all set.

Thinking of all of you and your students throughout Sandy!
congrats to those with acceptances and best of luck to those applying!
I for one can not wait for this to be over.

Pennylane,

I just helped my D make an alternate common app. It was easy and it populates all the demographic info from the last one into the new one!! You can make changes once it does that and then you need to reattach all attachments. GOod luck!!
