Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate! Looking forward to latkes and mandel bread for dessert tonight. Just want to add that my D was accepted to Tulane yesterday. Cant wait to go for a visit --shouldnt it be mandatory that our kids go to a school where we want to spend a few relaxing days??

I have used Simply Potatoes, but more recently have used bags of Ore Ida hash browns thawed in the refrigerator. It’s a bit more finely grated than Simply Potatoes. Of course, both of these options are much more expensive than peeling and grating potatoes…

Congratulations to all on your kids’ early acceptances.

Happy Chanukah to all! My dd comes home tonight from the end of her first semester! I am excited and worried about how different it will be with her here after her semester of being on her own. She will be home a month, so I am sure we will all settle in. Pushydad, I have no other children, but yet, I still check in here. Love the warmth and support and know if I have some questions about life at school, I can still get an answer! Congratulations to your dd!

Happy Hanukkah everyone! I also use Simply Potatoes. They are just as good. I always grate fresh onion, though.

Good new to share, DS has his 1st acceptance to Hofstra!! It’s such a good feeling to have one this early. I don’t know how everyone else waits until April. My older son did all rolling and EA and had all his acceptances by the end of December so this waiting game is new to us.

Hi everyone!

RVM: 2 1/2 years and this thread is still going strong, wow!

I see you guys are talking a bit about latkes and peeling potatoes? I just came across a recipe I’m going to try this year that calls for unpeeled potatoes. And matzo meal…suppose I could use bread crumbs instead of matzo meal? And wonder how the texture will be using unpeeled potatoes? Any one else try them that way?

Hard to believe we’ll be picking up S1 next Fri. as he finishes up his first semester of his sophomore year, where does the time go? He is scheduled to still go on Birthright right after New Years…yikes.

I’ll wait till S1 is home next week to make my latkes. Very nice to read of all the acceptances for this coming year. I’ve had a lull since my S2 is a h.s. junior, but frequent cc anyway! Yeah, it is a bit of an addicition!

Happy Chanukah to all of you and even as the last few posts show, we all spell this holiday differently!
Enjoy!

Hi choc. I hope things work out for your S’s birthright trip. I’m remembering the December 2 years ago when our kids and a few others got their ED results. Time really does fly.

Congratulations to Jayneb’s D and Shulamit’s S on their acceptances. Those are nice Hanukah presents.

Happy Hanukah. This is the first year neither of my daughters will be home for the holiday. D2 was very happy with an invitation to her roommate’s home to celebrate tonight.

Hi Choc…my son is scheduled to go on Birhright on January 7th. I’m still a little nervous, how about you? We have a parent orientation meeting tomorrow. Hopefully they will have some answers and advice for us that will make me feel better.

Stopping by to wish everyone a Happy Hanukah. Just ‘google plussed’ with my 2 college d’s (different schools) along with dh and d3 here–i am so appreciative of today’s technology! We lit the candles together and each d opened a gift. We’ll celebrate the rest of Hanukah once they’re both home.

Nice to read about the recent acceptances–may there be many more to come!

Hi Momjr!
Hard to believe they are halfway through sophomore year already!

Hi Jozuko: Did you post something a few weeks ago re: Birthright? I apologize I never answered! Crazy busy life gets in the way and I don’t realize just how quickly time is going by…if it was you or whoever mentioned Birthright, yes, I am nervous, but life is so busy at the moment, it’s actually a good thing, so I don’t have time to concentrate! I’m hoping that the 10 days will go slowly for him but fast for me!
You’re lucky you have a parent orientation. I am relying only on what my S tells me to do. He and a buddy are going to the airport together and meeting up with a bunch of Frat brothers from the school at the airport. So I will drive S & his friend to JFK and then the friend’s dad will pick them up 10 days later. It is always so fragile over there…there never really is a perfect time to go… of course I’m worried but know he will have a life changing experience. I couldn’t be more nervous and so happy at the same time!

Can’t wait to hug him when I see him next Friday for end of the semester pickup.

yes chocchip, that was me a few weeks ago. I am also nervous and happy. I spoke to the Rabbi at my temple and asked his feelings about sending DS now and he actually feels that there should be a period of calm for a while (I figured that he follows this stuff pretty closely, so who better to ask?) I had no idea that there would be a parent orientation; just got an email about a week ago. I’ll let you know tomorrow night what they had to say.

Happy Hanukah to all! DD is home already - only three semesters left - I can’t believe it. She starts an internship on Monday at a Jewish organization in NYC for two months (UD - the kids go back for spring semester on Super Bowl weekend). She’s excited but also a bit anxious. They already invited her to their Hanukah party on the Upper East Side next week…

Family Hanukah this weekend up in Boston… no latkes … but I will make next weekend when I have some friends over for a Hanukah dinner. DS wore his Tulane sweatshirt all weekend. Although he is waiting to hear from 5 colleges, he told family members today that the one he really can’t wait to hear from is Miami. Two more months…

I hope everyone waiting for ED responses this week gets their acceptances. May the odds ever be in your favor!

And congrats to all for the recent acceptances!

Time to stop lurking and join the party. First off, Happy Chanukah to all! Am I terrible that I made both the matzoh ball soup and latkes from Manischevitz mixes? I did doctor up the soup with mushrooms, peas and baby carrots. And I served the latkes with sour cream and caviar.

I have twins, DD and DS, very different academically. DS is the one that fits this thread. He has applied ED to a HMFR (if I’ve got that right) and several EAs. I’m anxiously waiting and I think he is oblivious. DD, who has stellar stats, applied EA to one school and is fairly anxious about it. Also has apps in to UCB and UCLA, the rest of her apps are RD and are due in January.

I know that DD really wants her EA, but I’m not worried because she has a great list of schools and I’m sure she’ll have some choices. I’m more worried about DS, so it would be so nice to get an acceptance in. None are due until around 12/15.

Tomorrow I’m going to make some Chanukah bark (also known as matzoh crunch), so I’ll be able to self-medicate with chocolate.

Hi pkdog13! Self-medication with chocolate always works for me too! Good luck for both your children. Do you mind if I ask for a translation of HMFR?

Happy Chanukah to all!
My H is the latkes maker in our family - a tradition from his father and grandfather, and my S is carrying on this tradition!! So last night was a treat - although we all ate way too much, and my house still smells of oil! But I love it.
Congrats to the new acceptances… and best of luck to everyone anticipating.
Exciting times for all of us.

Just dropping in to wish everyone here a Happy Hanukkah. Family party today on LI (it’s a big schlep) so I didn’t make latkes last night. I’ll make them next weekend when the boychild is home.

Welcome pkdof13. Glad you decided to join the fun! I’m with boysx3 - what is a HMFR? Have never seen that acronym before. When will he receive his decision? I know the waiting is tough. Chanukah bark sounds like an appropriate remedy!

Huge Mother F&*$ing Reach

OMG! That’s hysterical. Never heard that one before.

/\ That’s the definition as told to me by my older son, who is now a college freshman. If not, I have some egg on my face. See what you can learn on CC… It’s not all, " Should I retake my 2370 ?" threads…
He chose to share some other acronyms with me that I can classify as TMI ( too much information) so now when I ask him, I ask him if it’s PG-13 or NC-17…

That’s the correct definition, I learned it on the 2013/2017 parents’ thread. My son should find out around 12/15, as should my daughter.
