Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

For those who are interested - an update on the search for Jewish student Lauren Spierer, who disappeared from Indiana University in June 2011. Her parents were on Katie Couric’s show this week.

[Parents of missing Lauren Spierer say they were ‘stonewalled’ by daughter’s friends | Fox News](Parents of missing Lauren Spierer say they were 'stonewalled' by daughter's friends | Fox News)

Elon had an early Hanukah party - last week - so as to avoid conflict with finals.

That Lauren Spierer story is just so sad. I with the family could find out what happend to her.

RVM, the Elon Hanukah party sounds like fun. Did your son go?

Yes, that is tragic for Lauren and her family.
Sounds like Elon Hillel is active and has some nice events. I understand that Elon’s in the process of building a multicultural/multifaith center that will add a lot to the school when it is completed. They seem committed to diversity, with Hillel being part of that initiative.

Yes - he went. Food + girls = he is in attendance!

The new Elon Hillel Center will be opening soon. I think he is going to be able to tour it this week.

Just stopping in to this incredibly wonderful thread to wish all “Happy Chanukah” ! I hope that acceptances roll in – sooner and later – with good choices for all.

And good for Elon for trying so hard to find an English spelling of our holiday. Since all the variations are just transliterations from Hebrew, I tell friends that all these spellings are fine. Then we practice the ‘ch’ phonetic, best explained like this: “make like a cat, trying to cough up a hairball.”

Love that with the multiple spellings of Chanukah. I used to include that in my annual talk in elementary school showing the kids all the common transliterations then the actual Hebrew and discussion about what letter or letters in English make the that gutteral sound. Fun to see that picked up again. I was never as creative as that hairball explanation, love that! Paying3tuitions!

Hi everyone, sorry to post this now but i just received my sat scores. I got the same, 1070(CR-470 M-600), I have a 91.68 GPA(about 3.7). I’m a senior I’ve taken AP calculus ab, AP US History, 3 college now classes, and currently AP statistics. I have about 40 hours of community service and I am desperate to get into Baruch because I hear its very popular for its business programs. Please, how are my chances looking? I also am; submitting 2 letters of recommendation(one from the head of the math dept. at my school) and 1 college essay

Hi Hslife,
Chance threads are really just guesses, but looking at the actual score range of accepted applicant, you know you are at the lower end of the range. Also it looks like Baruch is highly selective- 22 % of applicants are admitted. With these kinds of statistics, one can never be sure of acceptance. I’m not familiar with Baruch, so maybe others will have suggestions, but looking at the numbers, being at the lower end, the chances are not high. Still, if you applied, one never knows. I guess you will be waiting for the unknown like many students, and that is not easy. It’s very difficult when a dream school is a reach, and it’s a good idea to have other schools to be interested in as well. I hope you have others in mind that you will be happy at.
I hope you have applied to other schools with business programs that you have a better chance at- that are better matches for you. If you post what you are interested in, others here may have some suggestions.
It’s hard to wait, but if you have applied to a range of schools that match you, you will hopefully hear good news.

hslife: Have you considered applying to Adelphi? It is near NYC, and with your stats you shouldn’t have any problem getting in, or even getting some scholarships. Their business programs are very highly regarded.

Elon Jewish fraternity news - son reports the new frat will be ZBT rather than AEPi, but feels the boys are not too concerned by the change in plans. Not sure why the administration picked ZBT, but three fraternities made presentations on campus, and ZBT was selected. They have a policy against both hazing and pledging, so I do like that!

An early Happy Chanukah to everyone.

My DC boys just called…they are practicing making latkes because tomorrow night they are having a Chanukah party and wanted to get the proportions down (and wanted to know if Dad and I were interested in making any extra financial contributions toward the fine Jewish endeavor) and a suggestion as to how many 10 lb. bags of potatoes they should buy. I suggested that instead of having people bring menorahs and candles they should have them bring graters. They think they have about two dozen people coming? I want to be a fly on the wall watching them make all those latkes. I don’t want to be a neighbor smelling the oil in the hallway for the next week.

I just hope they don’t burn down the whole place with all the menorahs and all the oil frying all those latkes.

RVM, my nephew is in ZBT…and loves it.

In 1000 pages I’m sure it’s been mentioned, but the less competitive Claremont consortium schools are definitely great options for a Jewish student with less amazing GPA. A few friends go to Pitzer and really like it. I’d almost venture to say the majority of students at that school have at least some Jewish descent. Best of luck with all your families’ searches and shabbat shalom. =)

They could get a food processor for about $30 at Best Buy. Unless you subscribe to my grandmother’s theory that latkes were supposed to contain a certain amount of human knuckle.

Oh, and if they have a garbage disposal–make sure they know you can’t peel the whole bag of potatoes and then try to put all the peels down the disposal at once.

I learned this the hard way our first Chanukah in this house. Apparently, it’s a well-known fact among plumbers.

Anxiously awaiting ED from American. Received acceptance from Tulane this week (D’s strong #2 choice) so the pressure is off. So why am I still obsessively reading CC?

Some might consider this cheating, but last year I used the Simply Potatoes hash browns in my latkes. It saved a lot of time and the latkes were perfect. I don’t think I’ll ever peel a potato again.

Pushydad, the last few week of waiting are very tough. I found it helpful to hang out on CC with all the other obsessive parents. Congrats to you D on her Tulane acceptance and best of luck with AU.

Pushydad, congrats to your daughter…what a nice Chanukah gift! I hope an even better gift is yet to come, if AU is her preference.

And CC is addictive…I haven’t had to do undergrad admissions since S3 (at AU) graduated high school in 2009.

I’ve used the Simply Potatoes too when my food processor was broken.

CC is addictive and also comforting as we are all in this waiting game together.

Congrats to pushydad, and thanks to EmmyBet and Queondaaqui for adding suggested schools to this thread.

Happy Hanukkah everyone!

Happy Hanukah! Hope all the kiddos who are traveling home this coming week arrive safely.
