Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Oh my. NUTELLA!!! We buy in the gigundo jar 2-pack at Costco or el cheapo at Big Lots. Goes quickly around here. Has anyone tried any other brand of hazelnut chocolate spread? I am afraid none will compare to nutella. But am so tempted to try the competition. Any recommendations/comments/experiences?

maybe we should start a new thread…“Nutellla for the Parents of Jewish College students!”

Don’t bother trying the others…my D is an expert and assures me nothing compares to Nutella!!!

Breakfast most mornings for DS is Eggos cinnamon toast waffles with Nutella and Cool Whip. He says it is the perfect combination.

I like Nutella, but I prefer Israeli chocolate spread.
We can get HaShachar Ha’Oleh brand in some local-ish grocery stores.

(Although I wish I’d brought more home from our trip to Israel. We were able to try it side-by-side with the product sold here and the Israeli version is even better. Unfortunately, when I told my daughter to bring a whole bunch home with her after her gap year, she didn’t realize I was serious!)

You are all bringing back memories of when my family lived on a kibbutz for a month when I was 12 years old! Neither my brother, my sister nor I liked the food, but they made fresh rolls on Sundays, which we hoarded and ate with chocolate spread all week long (or until we could get to a hotel and eat “American” food)! Those Nutalla jars from Costco are dangerous… I won’t buy them anymore!

I forgot how good the Israeli version is, I had a friend send us a few jars and that is what got us on our Nutella addiction 12 years ago!!!

Thanks, RVM. We will definitely stop by Hillel when we are Miami on Presidents Day!

DS just got accepted to U Florida Gainsville. He was excited to get in, but will most likely choose Miami or Tulane. Acceptances are nice, but these web sites are so annoying. It took 2 1/2 hours of logging in to get through. I don’t know why these schools announce the exact time that the info will be available and then don’t have the capacity to handle all of the log ins!

Congrats, jozuko. Acceptances are very nice, and your son has great choices!

Congratulations Jozuko!!

Congrats Jozuko. Your son has great choices.

Congratulations! Wonderful choices.

Elon has so many Jewish social and educational activities every week, thought I’d share this one:

CHOCOLATE BAGEL BRUNCH, Sunday, Feb 10, 12:30-1:30pm, Sklut Hillel Center: This bagel brunch is hosted by ZBT, Elon’s first Jewish fraternity! The brunch will include fresh bagels, lox, cream cheese, coffee, fruit. It will also include home-made brownies, hot chocolate, chocolate milk, chocolate creamer and a selection of delicious chocolates! Of course there will be chocolate-chip bagels. Non-Jewish friends are always welcome.

Congratulations, jozuko!

So who’s still waiting for decisions… which schools and what are the dates? We are waiting for three more - all tough admits: RPI (around March 10), Lehigh (around March 23) and Johns Hopkins (around March 29). Money is still on Miami though :)

Can I just say I’m glad the boards are back up? I was getting a little twitchy earlier today :)

So, as I mentioned in an earlier post, DS was accepted to U Miami, yay! But with no merit money, boo! To be honest, he was a little annoyed with the no money thing, especially since he was offered $20k from Tulane (his other top choice). Even a small amount would have said to him “we really want you.” From my research, I know that in past years, he would have definitely qualified for some $$ from UM, however, on their web site, the only thing I could find said that to be considered for merit $$ you need a 1350 SAT (he has a 1330, so I thought…hmmm I wonder how strict they are going to be about this).
Well, the official letter came today, and no surprise…no $$. So, what does my gutsy son do? He picks up the phone, calls UM admissions, asks to speak to his adcom and asks her to reevaluate his application for possible merit money! Gotta love this kid. He even told her about the money offer from Tulane. She looked up his application, told him that his GPA was great, but because he did not have a 1350, that was probably why no $$. She said that they would review it, but that the outcome would probably be the same. She had no recollection of meeting him (last April) or emailing him several times. This is why I am rooting for Tulane. So much more personal (adcom even send DS a birthday card!).
We are still waiting on a couple of more schools, but I think that the decision is getting closer!

Jozuko-You have quite a kid!

jozuko: Miami has always been a stickler for the SAT and class rank cutoffs for merit $$…

I had a student a couple of years ago with a top 10% rank, but a 1290 M/V SAT (Back when the cutoff was 1300) and he didn’t get $$ either…and received a very high award from Tulane that year…

They are more flexible on the GPA/class rank part…

Glad our HS doesn’t rank
