LINYMOM - Is Miami S’s top choice?

Congratulations, momof2! I hope you’ll post a report about your visit.

Spectrum, if anyone is having this crazy of a project, they aren’t admitting to it. Many kids we know are planning to go to one of the two large state universities based on their school loyalties. A few others had a specific OOS school they wanted to attend so their project was all about making that happen. We’re the ones with D going “I want to go OOS to some place really cool but I don’t know where.” And then we are off to a running start…

I love hearing about all the acceptances on this thread recently. If I’ve missed congratulating anyone, please forgive me. I’m still working on sorting out all the information.

Congratulations Momof2!

Ohmmom: Last year my S2 was one of the 2 state university kids. He didn’t even want to look at another school. I know most kids have loyalty to one or the other but we flip flopped many times. When my S1 was applying he was like your daughter and wanted to go some place cool…preferably more than a day’s drive away, so we also took a crash course in applying to college. I know that drill like no one else in our HS at least for that year, or so it seemed. Enjoy the journey!

Mazel tov on all the good news!

Yes, it is… although he still has three schools he’s yet to hear from. I still believe his heart is in Miami :)

I was really happy I found CC and I’m sure you will reap the benefits too. The info garnered here really puts you ahead of the game and will really benefit your DD. My DS admitted on Friday night, after Miami acceptance, that he’s glad I pushed him so much. I can’t imagine not being so informed. I actually texted my friend around the block yesterday to let her know that Miami decisions had been posted so her DS would check. They had no clue about the actual date the decisions would be out. She said she had been checking occasionally but hadn’t checked on Fri or Sat (yet). So she logged on and told me he had gotten in with $$. I guess the decision is the same either way. I still like to be “in the know.”

Congrats to all so far. I just found this site last May after our older son had been accepted to schools and chose Binghamton U. I didn’t realize how blind/naive/ignorant we were until I educated myself on this site (and others) and learned the nuances to navigate through the entire process which has helped with our youngest who is a senior this year. I think many parents, even in our upper SES, excellent high school area rely on their own experiences from thirty years ago as a benchmark and get a rude awakening as to the differences now from then.

Congrats to all the acceptances this weekend; haven’t had time to stalk the Miami thread, but just from here and some of my students, the applicant pool must have gotten extremely competitive as all the merit awards seemed to have been watered down this year…I also know VERY high stats kids who were not invited to Singer/Stamps, where they surely would have been in previous years…

To the poster whose student is applying RD to Emory…be very careful of assuming anything in terms of chances there for RD; it is all about filling out the class demographically, ethnically, etc there for RD…over the years I have seen slam dunk kids who have demonstrated interest get waitlisted and others from underrepresented parts of the country/population/gender accepted with lower stats and NO demonstrated interest…

If there were a lot of females accepted, for example, in ED, it is easier to be accepted RD as a male…you get the drift; fill in the blanks…

Did any of the peeps on here apply for the Paul Tulane or Deans award from Tulane?

rodney: I have been living on the Miami and Tulane boards (LOL). I don’t think the S/S invites have gone out yet nor have the special scholarship awards from Tulane been announced. I’m positive there would be some posts about them, and there haven’t been yet.

Interested in hearing more about your experience this year with Miami decisions (if you can share info generally enough).

^^i have been away since last week; just returned…had no idea S/S were not sent yet!?

Quick story–D1 is studying abroad in France this semester. She is looking for a gym or yoga studio to no avail. She said that the college does not have its own gym. I said, “Only in America are the universities like country clubs.” She answered dreamily, “Yeah, I love America.”

@vitrac my daughter wants to study abroad this summer and I would be interested in your daughter’s experiences. Is she with a program through her university, or through one of the study abroad companies like IES, CEA, API etc? Which city is she studying in?

@Pamom59-Last summer, D1 spent 6 weeks in Thailand through ProWorld, not studying, but volunteering in areas of Public Health, mostly with COSA (Children of Southeast Asia). The experience was, as she would say, life altering. PM me for more info.

D1’s university demands that you be proficient in the language of the destination country. D1 never felt that confident in her language ability.Plus, it is difficult to combine the language with the area of study the student is interested in.

She is now studying in Toulouse with SIT (one of those companies). She wanted an intensive language program and to live with a host family. It’s only been a week, but so far, aside from the lack of yoga studios that are open during lunch, she is very happy. She loves her host family and feels she may, after umpteen years of studying French, be able to speak it by the time the semester is over. 4 hours/day of instruction, an internship (beginning tomorrow) and living with the family can be a little intense, but she is loving the city and the experience. Again, feel free to PM me if you have more specific questions.

Congrats LINYMOM and Vitrac! So great to keep hearing the positive news!

Thanks Champs!!!

champs: Thanks! This will be you next year! We will be here for you!

What a greatly informative chart. Thank you so much for posting it. I have a Jewish ‘B’ student interested in attending a smaller school and majoring in education with studio art interests. Lesley and Goucher are now on our list!

I’ve been out of town and couldn’t wait to log on and check out the Miami results. Congrats on all the latest acceptances. Linymom, I remember when your son visited Miami a few years ago and loved it then.

Congrats on the Goucher acceptances also. I’ve mentioned before that my niece graduated from Goucher a few years ago and had an excellent experiece there.

Vitrac, what a great experience for your D.

A Post Script on D1’s internship in France-She is working with a nutritionist and chef, preparing crepes for the homeless. You can’t make this stuff up.

crepes for the homeless…love it! The first thing I ate in Paris was a crepe filled with nutella, at a tourist stop with a view of the Eiffel Tower; the yummiest thing ever!

Nutella is very popular in my house.
