Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Thank you for the wonderful visit report and great advice on the application process. Differentiating your student - critical!

Also meant to say thanks for all of the best wishes! The fun never ends; just realized that parents weekend at 2 of the 3 schools is the same weekend.

Susanmw- you’ll just have to trade off or alternate them. On the other hand, you got to do 3 bar mitzvah’s at the same time- all that stress done in one day :)

Since my DS is now trying to secure summer employment, I thought I would share this resource here through which my DD got her internship for last winter. It’s www.jewishjobs.com. It wasn’t paid, but it was a great experience and she made some important contacts. They do have paid jobs on there too, not just internships.

Hi everyone-

I’m a new poster; I’ve been reading for a while and thought I’d post. I’m not a parent though; I’m a transfer student looking for some advice on the Jewish life at AU, GWU, UMD, and Stern College (although it’s not really a question for Stern).

Does anyone know about the more Mod. Orthodox kids or activities, kosher meal plans, Shabbats, etc. I’m more of a Hillel/Chabad girl.

Thanks :-)

I think observant kids are well-accommodated at UMCP.

You have your choice of two different Orthodox services at Hillel (plus there’s Chabad)
[Shabbat Service Times and Information - Maryland Hillel](http://www.marylandhillel.org/servicetimes/)

And a kosher dining plan

https://www.marylandhillel.org/mpregistration/

And the campus is in an eruv
[Eruv - Maryland Hillel](http://www.marylandhillel.org/studentlife/jewishexperience/eruv/)

We have an observant relative at UMCP and she has found lots of support there. Lots of activities, good community.

Obviously, Stern will have much of what you are looking for as well, but less of the secular influence in classes, dorms etc.

Thanks DeskPotato and stradmom. I have quite a few high school classmates that go to UMCP. I visited in HS for a senior project, and we had lunch at the Hillel. Felt like HS all over again since there were SO many alumni there! The kosher dining was great, though.

@stradmom: That’s the thing with Stern; as much as I would like to engage in aspects of that environment, I’d like to make friends that are not in the bubble I grew up in (went to a Jewish school).

The location/potential for jobs and internships is certainly a positive factor and one of the reasons I’m leaning towards it, and I’ve heard that not everyone is super religious, which is good (for me, at least). I see you mentioned the dorms; how are they? I haven’t visited yet, but my sister said that they were nice.

Can anyone shed some light on AU and GWU’s Jewish communities?

Fabulous: I know that GW has a very strong and active Jewish community but I don’t know the details, just that one of my S’s friends is there, currently a senior and has been very involved with Hillel and loves it.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about Hillel-wise at any of these colleges. These colleges have been discussed in depth on this thread and seem to have a large enough presence on the campuses.

Fabulous - I am 100% sure that both AU and GWU have strong Jewish resources - for Orthodox Jews as well. I’m adding a link for Kesher Israel - a modern Orthodox synagogue in the Georgetown area of DC - would be reasonably close to both schools - although perhaps too far to walk.

Tell me about Stevens Institute of Technology (Engineering) in NY for a Jewish DD interested in Electrical Engineering. (Soooo not my DD. Asking for a friend)

She told me she is only interested in dating Jewish boys. I know she will be in the minority as a female. What’s the Jewish community like at Stevens?

She is also considering an engineer school in Illinois.

Hi, how are you? Not very familiar with Stevens. I have been wondering about how you are doing? The last time you posted on here, you mentioned some serious health issues in your family and I have been thinking about you and how the situation has progressed. So, Guilford did work out for your daughter?

Not much on the Stevens Hillel website - I would suggest your friend email them directly.

[Stevens Institute of Technology](http://ugstudentlife.stevens.edu/org/hillel/home)

Contact hillel@stevens.edu for more information.

fabulous,
My daughter is a student at AU. They have a reform service and a conservative service on Friday nights. I don’t know where the Orthodox students go for Shabbat or whether they have daily minyanim. There is a kosher kitchen in McDowell Hall which is used by the students, but I’m not sure whether kids who keep kosher use it routinely to prepare their own meals, or if it’s just available for Hillel-sponsored things like challah-baking.

There is a Chabad rabbi named, I think, Rabbi Chinn? who is recently affiliated with AU. If you email Jason Bekendorf (Hillel director) I am sure he can give you a clearer picture of what the modern orthodox situation is at AU.

There is also a mom who posts on this thread (but not recently) who has two sons at American, one an undergrad and one a grad student. They have both been Jewishly involved and she might have some good information.

@Stillnadine, my DS is a nice (and recently available) Jewish boy studying electrical engineering at Alabama. The girl you mention will have no problem finding Jewish guys at many different schools. As a minority (girl studying engineering), she will be in great demand. Can’t comment specifically on Stevens, but most schools in the NY area will have a noticeable number of Jewish students.

I’m still waiting here for the shidduch thread.

RVM, thank you so much for asking about my DD. On the advice of you wonderful CC posters, I called Guilford and explained our situation. DD was awarded an additional $1250 a year in scholarships plus $2000 in work study.

No idea whether our calling really made any difference. She may have been in line to get those scholarships anyway. The whole financial aid realm is a mystery. (The Muhlenberg website had a great article about how they decided to grant scholarships. Still mysterious.)

Along with her other scholarships, that still put us about $4000 a year short of our comfort zone. After much discussion and anguish (of course) we decided to go ahead and send the deposit. Still nervous, but DD is so happy and has worked so hard. With DH’s heath issues, we didn’t want take on any debt but I think we will be able to figure out how to raise the extra money. DD is working and saving, too.

My DS is graduating from CofC in May with a JOB in hand, so, really we are doing great.

And regarding my Stevens question: I made a mistake. The college is in New Jersey not NY. Hoboken.

Stillnadine: I’m glad to hear that your D is so happy with her choice. Good luck bridging the gap. Congrats to your S on his graduation and job! I hope your’s H’s health improves.

fabulous,
I was mistaken about Rabbi Chinn. He is on the Hillel staff but he’s not affiliated with Chabad. Here is the link for ChabadAU, if you haven’t already found it. I have to imagine that would be the place that would attract the more observant.
