Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

stillnadine - fabulous news! Congratulations! So glad it worked out.

I wish there were a ‘like’ button for pennylane’s comment. Soon enough, we’ll be working the shidduch thread…

Thanks for the info, everyone! Much appreciated. I’m mainly just concerned about kosher meal plans/dining. UMD’s Hillel is excellent in that regard (among others). I’ll be visiting GW next week and hopefully will be able to get some info on that.

@DeskPotato thanks! I did speak with Jason when I visited, but didn’t get a chance speak with the Chabad since they were off-campus. I will definitely email though.

Has anyone heard about the Meor program? It’s a bit like Hillel, but heard towards learning. Just thought I’d mention it in case someone was interested

^^Fabulous:

My older S did the Meor program last year as a freshman. He loved it. It’s a 10 week learning session that takes place once a week for @ 2hours, I think. At the end of the program they are paid a $400 stipend. It is aimed at teaching kids leadership skills and connecting on different academic levels. There is a trip to Israel too if you choose to go and you can use the $400 toward the trip cost, which I think is @$500! Not every college offers it, but if someone is interested, maybe they can go to a nearby college or look on their website for more info.

Just wanted to say “Hi” and thank everyone who has contributed to this wonderful thread. We are just starting the whole “college process” but I found reading the posts here very, very helpful. I haven’t read all 1,000+ pages yet, but I’m working on it.

Wow! Are you really going to read the whole thread? That’s quite an undertaking! Anyway, hello and welcome. Let us know when/if we can be of help.

Welcome Mamabear16! I love this thread - hope you find great info here too!

Shidduch thread – LOL! When I read stillnadine’s post, I thought, “Well, I know a nice Jewish boy, engineering major, who is going to Miami in the fall…” I’m only writing this here because I absolutely cannot let these words out of my mouth in real life (especially because he has a GF! Not Jewish but so far a great girl!)

Make it two boys going to UMiami, Engineer major ( even the girlfriend thing is the same), lol.

LINY and ddahwan–Can you say “Roommate?”

Great idea, vitrac, but ddahwan lives in Miami and I believe her DS will be living at home, right ddahwan? We’ve been chatting though so I know we will connect – and we will connect our boys too :)

My daughter is at the end of Junior year and the search has started. She wants a sm-med size school (3000-10,000) students so she will have more intimate learning experience. Her other “must have” is a Jewish presence on campus. She is active in NFTY, did Kutz leadership, started a Jewish student union in high school and is completing her Girl Scout Gold Award doing a project with Jewish Family and Career Services. She is a good student (at an uber-competitive public high school) but not top 10% (more like top 25%). She is looking for psychology, business, and some jewish studies as her initial path (but that could change given her opportunities). She says she wants to be within a 6 hour drive from home but I think she should look beyond the miles. There only seems to be one in-state option that meets her “fit” and it is not that exciting. We have visited College of Charleston (her first choice), Elon (mom and dad’s first choice), Appalachan State, Georgia College (the instate option), Dickinson (that is out of her distance). We were discouraged from Guilford due to some political views. Recommended to check out Eckerd in St. Pete. I want her to look at Clark. Any other ideas out there??? Money is a consideration but we know that she will need to take loans.

She might like American or GWU. Both are a reasonable match for a strong student who is not top 10%. Are those in your driving distance?

Hello and welcome! As I started reading your post, CofC and Elon were going to be my first two recommendations, so glad to see they are on the list. Would she consider Muhlenberg in PA? Very popular with Jewish students, at the smaller end of your range. If you are going to look at Eckerd in FL, I would also suggest looking at Rollins. How about University of Miami? Might be toward the larger end of your range, but a very popular option among students on our thread.

We also liked that 3000-10,000 range, but found it to be a harder size to find. Plenty of larger universities and plenty of smaller schools, but that middle range can be a challenge.

What did she like most about CofC? If she prefers an urban setting, that might be your best option, as it fits your other stated goals.

Btw, what is Georgia College? I have heard of Georgia Southern, but not Georgia College. Are you saying you are in-state for Georgia?

Vitrac, I am sure my son would have loved the idea, but Linymom is right. But Shabbat dinners are always a lot of fun in my house. Big family and 7 teenagers, ages 21-13 and tons of food.

Hi MomofGrits- I love your name.
I’m not sure about Jewish life at Agnes Scott, and if your D would like a women’s college, but since it is in Atlanta- there may be more connection to Jewish life there than at Georgia College- and possible a connection with the other colleges there. UGA is a larger school than your D wants- but there is Jewish life there. One other poster recently wrote that she felt it it was small, but we didn’t. There’s a Hillel, Chabad, Jewish sorority and fraternity. Jewish life at U. Alabama is also growing.
ddahwan- Shabbat sounds like a lot of fun at your house.

I just noticed this thread and thought it may be of interest. I’m not familiar with this school, but it looks like they have some nice activities.

Momofgris: I can chime in on App State and CofC. Very different locations.

But I must ask: what are the Guilford political views that are concerning you?

MomofGrits: Just sent you a message. We should connect. Our sophomore DD also attends an uber competitive public HS in the metro ATL, is also going for her gold award, is also active in NFTY, and is also a good student looking for a college with decent Jewish presence. Her additional criteria include: (1) a school with more undergrads than her HS (2,600!) and (2) college in a city (though she recently added Elon to her list). And she is willing to go farther from home. Based on this wonderful board and the Reform Judaism article showing Jewish presence, her current list includes…in no order yet: Tulane, NYU, Boston U, Univ of Wisconsin, Pitt, and Wash U. Also CofC, where her older sister currently attends.

UGA and Ga C&S Univ will probably be her in-state financial safeties, but she’s not excited about either option.

Ga Southern has a lot more Jewish students than I had initially thought. Have you considered it?

Case Western might be a possibility. The Cleveland Hillel, which services students from 12 colleges in the Cleveland area is located in the center of CWRU’s campus, and the school offers a minor in Judaic studies. The business and psychology programs are well developed, as are plenty of other majors. It hits the sweet spot for medium sized schools in a city (admittedly, Cleveland isn’t the nicest area), although it’s best known as an engineering school, so the students might be a bit nerdier than average.

Wolfmannn, your daughter might want to add Ohio State University to her list if she’s considering UW-Madison. It’s a great school in a great city, and has the Wexner Jewish Student Center which appears to offer a ton of events[/url”>http://osuhillel.org/calendar.php]events
