Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

Choc: I’m glad that your son is okay. Thanks for thinking of my D. She is fine but very shaken up by yesterday’s events. My older D now lives and works in Boston and was at the Marathon finish line 2 hours before the explosion. I am very thankful that they are okay. I think you made the right decision to postpone your visit to BU. Things are very strange right now. It’s such a tragedy.

On a happier note, congrats to Jaynebe and Shulamit on the great choices.

Just was announced that third person killed yesterday was a BU grad student. What a horrific tragedy.

Just spoke with a business colleague who grew up with the father of the 8 year old who died. So sad. My brother works in Boston but, fortunately, was out of town yesterday. It’s all so tragic.

On a positive note, I was thrilled to hear that jaynebe’s D2 made her decision! GO TERPS! Plus, Southwest must fly from Providence to Baltimore, right? Happy for you and your family!

Thoughts and prayers to everyone in Boston. We all have friends and family there and this tragedy cuts very close to home.

Thank you for everyone’s good wishes!

Duplicate post

ShawD lives maybe a 20 minute walk from the site and has been going to more sporting events this year than in the past (when she went to virtually none). She texted us to say that bombs had gone off but that she was at home. However, her cell/text service was spotty as they were cutting it off. We know many people who run and many who watch – ShawWife watched last year in Newton but so far we have not heard of anyone we know who was hurt. However, the carnage is do painful and horrific.

chocchip and momjr so glad your kids were safe. Liny what a tragedy for that family with mom and daughter also severely injured. Prayers to them and all in harm’s way yesterday. It was so surprising to see my mom’s cardiologist on the news talking about helping victims. He was there to assist the runners with his wife participating in the race. They are fine.

Glad to hear that everyone’s family is fine. The no cell phone thing must have been terrible for anyone trying to communicate with family members. On a lighter note, congrats to all that have finally committed! Time for t-shirts and deposits. And to try to figure out all the rest (easier said that done, but I’ve been promised that in the end THEY will figure it out, lol).

What are great schools for a top 25% Jewish girl who wants a school with fun athletic teams, Greek life and liberal arts/business? In other words, what are other schools like Michigan? Fortunately, distance and cost are not deal breakers. Thanking you in advance for suggestions.

Kansas and Indiana might be options.

There are too many to list, so you might want to narrow that down. Side note, I think Michigan is a out of reach for most “top 25%” students. What are your D’s stats? What extent of Jewish life does she want?

Hey chocchip, momjr and shaw: so glad to hear your kids are okay.

Life is crazy.

was thinking about everyone with kids in Boston, and hoping all are safe. So scary, this world we live in. Has anyone here had their kids do the Discovery program over the summer. My son (junior in HS) wants to stay home and work at his video editing job full time this summer. He has always gone to camp and then last year did 2 incredible teen tour/service trips. I feel he has the rest of his life to work full time and I want him to still have at least a few weeks to be a kid (although a productive kid of course). At Discovery he would be staying at UCLA, I hear it’s a big party which I expect; but he would also take 2 classes. He chose abnormal psych. because he’s very interested in psychology and his IB psych class this year did not cover abnormal psych and the other class is “surfing” hard to believe surfing is a class, but I know he would love that. Figured I would see if any of you have any experience with it either positive or negative?

I think these are way out of our $$$ and not sure she would get enough in scholarships or aid.

Rockvillemom-yes we are Georgia residents so getting the HOPE is a benefit for staying instate. Georgia College is in Milledgeville (middle GA). Mostly GA kids. It attracts the instate kids who don’t get into UGA or Tech.

Pennylane-UGA is bigger than she wants but we are still going to look. She is also reconsidering looking at Alabama since she has Jewish friends from youth group who are there.

We were told that the new president of the school is Pro-Palestine and the Jewish students don’t feel overly comfortable being outwardly Jewish. Not sure if this is accurate but we went with our gut.

Hi! Our D’s probably know each other. What area of Atl are you? East Cobb at Kol Emeth.

I’m putting it on our list to look into.

Putting it on the list to investigate. Thanks
