Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

I’ve added my D.

HouTxmom: D Oxford/Emory
LuvMomN8ur: D Juniata College ¶
pkdof13: S Wheaton (MA), D Wellesley

Juniata: LuvMomN8ur’s D
Oxford/Emory: HouTxmom’s D
Wellesley: pkdof13’s D
Wheaton (MA): pkdof13’s S

NYMom3Kids–A good friend of my D decided to go to University of Denver after looking at their class sizes and learning support. She has similar stats to your D. I think they’re known for their openness to students with learning issues. I don’t know whether it’s too “New York.”

Love the list! Keep going!

I’ll add my D

Juniata: LuvMomN8ur’s D
Oxford/Emory: HouTxmom’s D
UMDCP: Jaynebe’s D
Wellesley: pkdof13’s D
Wheaton (MA): pkdof13’s S

Been a while, congrats to all the newly decided.

MYMom, I’ll put in a plug for Alabama. Large (though not enormous), certainly rah-rah, amazingly friendly, not too many New Yorkers (though growing, including DS). Bonus–her stats would receive 2/3 tuition scholarship. If she can get up to 32 ACT, it becomes full tuition. Not sure if UA meets your other needs, but they have a very active board here on CC for your research.

congratulations all around.
NYmom: I don’t know if “rah-rah” refers to football specifically, but if not, then JMU might be a good choice for your D. Lots of school spirit.

UMiami is full of New Yorkers so is def out, lol. Bama is a great option, I’ve heard wonderful things about it. Just went back on the tread and saw that your DD got a ACT of 31. This is a great score. Her options are wide open. Regarding the learning support, I think is better to contact each school directly once you narrow them down and asked them about the type of learning support they provide. You might me happily surprise that some school offer more support ( if the child has a real need) than what the website advertises.

NYMom: I’ll just throw this one out there but it is very likely not what you are looking for. My S goes to Texas A&M and loves it. While he has not had any “learning” support he is signed up with the diasabilities office and they are very supportive. They did arrange for every need we had to be met before my S got to school. You would need to ask about your daughter’s specific needs. Definitely no worries about too many New Yorkers :). I’m pretty sure your daughter’s stats would work. I think her GPA might be about the 25th percentile but her ACT is probably above the 75th. (It is difficult to assess stats in Texas schools because a good part of admissions is driven by the top 10% rule for in state public school students). The school is packed with spirit, especially this year with our Heisman Trophy winner! The Jewish population is small but tight and my S has enjoyed both Hillel and Chabad, not with a lot of frequency but there for him when he wanted it. A beautiful brand new Hillel building just opened this year. The school is also well ranked for many majors. It is definitely not the school that Jewish students flock to but my S preferred it to UT and it does seem to fulfill the requirements you mentioned. Since it is very likely not a school that crossed your mind I thought I would mention it. Also if your daughter is awarded a scholarship she will also get in state tuition as long as she is eligible for the scholarship.

NYmom: Just checked the JMU website and they do have football, so definitely “rah-rah.” And, a very good basketball program, so great spirit there.

You all are so great, really appreciate it! Since D is interested in PR as a possible major, Bama sounds like it might be a good fit for some of what she/we are looking for. My questions about it are how large is the Jewish population (important to both her and us) and if perhaps the school is too Southern? I read somewhere about their Greek Life, rushing procedures and it seemed a bit too intense with sponsorships and teas and what-not. She is interested in joining a sorority but doesn’t want to be a fish out of water.

According to the University of Alabama’s Hillel, there are about 700+ Jewish kids on campus ([University of Alabama: Hillel](University of Alabama: Hillel) ). Though it’s small compared to say University of Florida or SUNY Binghamton, 700 students is a lot of other Jews. I’d imagine at least 2/7th of the Jewish population regularly participate which means there are at least 200 other Jews to meet.

You might want to post your specific sorority questions on the UA subforum as they’re likely to know how intense the rush process is.

NYMom3kids: If your D is willing to reconsider campus size, what you are posting about her makes me think of Elon. It’s smaller but still has sports and school spirit, a growing and active Hillel, and the small size makes it possible for student support and smaller class size with faculty mentors. They have PR as part if the communications major- which has its own student broadcasting station and internships in major cities. She should also apply to the Communications Fellows program. Her ACT score certainly qualifies her, so she should apply and let them consider her GPA along with her other qualifications.

Thanks whenhen and pennylane. I am perusing the Alabama forum now as well. Elon is on our list now that we have done more thorough research. We are considering all schools that are 5,000 students and up. She just doesn’t want to go to a small LAC or to a rural type of area.

While the area around Elon is rural, it’s 20 minutes from Greensboro in one direction (west) and 30-45 minutes from Chapel Hill- Durham- Raleigh the other direction to the east , so there is access to cities and internships are in major cities. It seems to have much of what she is looking for so worth taking a look at.

NYMom, have you thought about UofWisconsin, Madison? Great school, might fit the bill.

We have put UW-M on our list, thank you. Is there a way to easily find out if schools use buses to transport kids around campus? We saw that at UGA and felt that as much as she wants a big school that the bus scenario may indicate it is a bit too large for her. Does Bamas campus require buses?

I don’t know about Alabama, but I can’t think of a college other than very small campuses that doesn’t use a bus system. It’s possible to have the dorms on one side and classes on the other end of campus, so a bus is necessary both for time and in bad weather. Of course, the larger the campus, probably the more busses.

Buses are by no means a deal breaker. I would just prefer that she be able to get to most classes without one, but we will see. :)

Adding my DS:

Juniata: LuvMomN8ur’s D
Oxford/Emory: HouTxmom’s D
UMDCP: Jaynebe’s D
University of Miami: LINYMOM’s S
Wellesley: pkdof13’s D
Wheaton (MA): pkdof13’s S

Also, I want to add to the current conversation.

Just met a mom yesterday (here on LI) whose DD is finishing her soph year at Alabama and is very happy. She said they love the southern “culture,” but yes, sorority rush was quite the drama. Pretty sure they aren’t Jewish. The DS of one of my good friends (Jewish) transferred to Alabama from Temple after freshman year and really loves it. Pretty sure he’s not involved with anything Jewish, but he is in a fraternity and is really happy there.

And, re: Elon - I am interviewing a graduating senior this week for a PR job. I know you can never judge from a name, but I think she is Jewish.
