I consider Elon more suburban than rural just for clarification. I’m comparing it to upstate New York (which I consider more rural)…

LINYMOM: sending you a PM

@Sealee, please let us know how it goes. I want to send my son an daughter next year. How far ahead do they have to register? Did he do it trough a synagogue or other organization?

Rodney, I was wondering about that because College Board says Elon is in a suburban area. A school with a surrounding area that has malls, restaurants and movie theatres would appeal more to my D then just a college town and nothing much past that. Thanks for the input. Upstate NY is very rural! I’ve spent a lot of time in the Catskills.

Sealea, I don’t know how many groups are leaving on that date. My S is 24, just finishing up his graduate degree. He is hesitating on making his final travel plans too…he has a job interview coming up and if he is lucky enough to land this position, he might not be able to travel as much as he might like to.

Every time one of my kids is in Israel things seem to get a bit too “interesting” for my liking. Like when one son was in Sderot when the shelling started.

These new events are making me a bit nervous again.

But Birthright does a great job of keeping everyone out of harm’s way and giving them a great trip, no matter what else is going on.

I know this issue has been flaring up on many campuses - but FYI:

Hi all, I am new to this forum. Having just landed our DS #1 at USC for the next 4 years, I am now ready to think about DS #2, who will be a HS Sophomore. He is extrememly interested in Judiac studies or some iteration of that as his major in college, and is a great student. Does anyone on this thread happen to know where there are good programs for this? Thanks!

PS I was delighted to hear that at USC the Hillel students will bring hot chicken soup to any member who is sick :)

rockvillemom – Since you are posting about Oberlin, I thought I’d share a link that was sent to me earlier this year about Oberlin… It sounds like there have been problems there lately, but to be honest I don’t know much about what is going on there.

esteemom – welcome! Please share how your DS#1 likes USC – we visited a few weeks ago and were impressed.

esteemom - hello and welcome. For Jewish studies - one of my first thoughts is Muhlenberg College in PA - very strong Jewish population and a new major in Jewish Studies:

[Muhlenberg College to Offer Jewish Studies Major Starting in the Fall of 2013](http://www.muhlenberg.edu/main/newsevents/press/jewish_studies.html)

Indiana University also has a very large and active Jewish population and offers the Jewish Studies major:

<a href=“Indiana University Bloomington”>Indiana University Bloomington;

Tulane would be another good option:

http://tulane.edu/liberal-arts/jewish-studies/major-and-minor.cfm

What other criteria do you and your son have?

Wheaton College in MA also has a new Jewish Studies program.
