Given that U Maryland, Florida State, UGA, and U Miami are on this list, the term B student has been interpreted to include a wide range of B students ranging from the slightly above average who might only be competitive for the likes of West Virginia University and U Hartford to someone who has mostly As but a smattering of Bs and standardized scores in the top 5% of all students.

It’s pretty competitive, but reach schools are always good!

I’m inclined to agree with voyager24 regarding UWisconsin, assuming that we’re talking 'bout Madison – that’s an ‘A’-student school, if the Dommon Data Set is to be given any credence.

In any event, for states with multiple campuses, shouldn’t our list specify campus?

Here’s the list organized by state. I added some Western options and a few others which have good but limited (eg, not necessarily appropriate for a modern Orthodox but good for reform) Jewish life and took out a couple schools which a B student doesn’t have a chance at without near perfect board scores or a true hook. When I was sorting out the list by state, I may have forgotten to include some schools on the lists. A few of the schools on the list are mainly commuter but have enough Jewish students living on or near campus to sustain an active Jewish life. One of the best examples of this is CSU Northridge.

In North Carolina, UNC Chapel Hill has a Hillel, and Duke has a Jewish Center. Both have services, activities, etc.

Per the [current collegeboard information](<a href=“https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/university-of-north-carolina-at-chapel-hill?searchType=bf_site&q=&bf_cat=bf_"]current”>https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/college-university-search/university-of-north-carolina-at-chapel-hill?searchType=bf_site&q=&bf_cat=bf_), with a 28% acceptance rate and 96% of students admitted having a 3.75 or better GPA, I’d be inclined to leave UNC Chapel Hill off of a ‘B-student’ list.

Oh yes. So sorry. I’d leave them both off!! Rewind…

Per Smith College’s CDS, I would not list it for a B student as a match, it’s a super reach even with strong test scores–2013 entering class had 86.65 of accepted students with GPA of 3.5 or higher, 2012 entering class had 83.7% of accepted students with GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Do we have a second in the house?

George Mason is the reputed commuter school, not George Washington.

Good morning! Is everyone hiding under the covers to escape the cold? Wish I was!
Yesterday was crazy cold here in Maryland, today is a little better, supposed to get up to 27F later, and it will be close to 60F by the weekend. Hope everyone is surviving…

Wondering if anyone else is facing the same phenomenon that I’ve been noticing in my house…

Up til now Cheergirl’s kept an open mind about college selection. We agreed to evaluate each acceptance and financial package objectively when the time was right. Still waiting to hear from 3 schools.

Ahh, the “evils” of social media…she’s joining Facebook groups of schools to which she’s been accepted [Super U/Class of 2018] and she’s starting to get “emotionally attached” to one particular school. One girl even messaged her about the possibility of becoming roommates–YIKES! Even though I want to shout “SLOW DOWN” I’m keeping my cool and recognizing that this is a normal part of the transition/separation process…anyone else going through this with Facebook groups of accepted students?

On the one hand, I wish expatSon would take more of an active investigative role that way – but his analysis is decidedly data centric (‘Where is the school (urban/rural)?’ / ‘How large is it?’ / ‘Does it have the majors I might pursue?’)

On the other hand, better he should focus on his studies – he still has to ‘convince’ a deferral school that he’s a desirable candidate, and convince us that he can crush his academics come September. Given his late August birthday, I’d be happy if he took the better part of a gap year in some Spanish-speaking country to become fluent.

Oh, and I walked the 3 miles to work in the balmy single digit Boston weather this a.m.
Currently, it’s threatening to hit 20F degrees. 50F+ & rain forecast for the weekend.

CanuckDad,

Is CanuckSon at all open to the possibility of a gap year, or is he completely dismissive? Do you know if his accepted schools are willing to defer his admission and merit awards?

PS - Virtual pat on the back for the 3-mile walk!!! I’m guessing the snow removal efforts in Boston are far superior to those in my neck of the woods! :)

I believe that expatSon is now considering a gap year, a turnaround from this past spring and autumn’s ‘no friendly way’ position. I will be canvassing the schools forthwith for their policies.

Snow removal was good – but the 50-degree weather on the weekend was better.

Union in NY isn’t really a school for B students–it’s pretty competitive. And Fordham has a VERY small undergraduate Jewish population. I’m a New Yorker and have had plenty of Jewish friends who went to Fordham for law school, so I assumed it had a reasonable-sized Jewish undergrad population. When I looked into it (at a college counselor’s suggestion), I found that it was VERY small. Not sure why Stony Brook isn’t on the list of SUNY schools if Binghamton is–for in-state, Binghamton is very competitive, more so than Stony Brook. Most of the SUNY colleges are going to have a reasonable Jewish population: I’m sure Oneonta does, for example.

@Cheermom, my escape strategy was to move back home to California for a few weeks. The only blanket I’ve needed is one for the beach.

@ExpatCanuck, would your son consider WWOOF http://www.wwoof.net/ ? A friend of mine did it and credits it with getting her French up to conversational level. Hers was a shorter program, but after she got to ride the train around Europe and did it with one of the people she met on the French countryside.

@Charlucas, Union seems like a pretty decent, albeit selective, school for a B student. According to its common data set, 57% of students had below a 3.5 (only 34% submitted class rank, making the statistic basically useless) and the overwhelming majority of students scored below a 700 on every section of the SAT. It seems to be a school for the high stats B student rather than one whose SAT scores and GPA are right around the national average.

I didn’t realize Fordham’s Jewish population was so small. I just remember looking at it with my mom when we went to NYC and seeing a temple next to it. I guess I assumed the Jewish population there was going to be quite large. The issue with Binghamton’s selectivity was noted in the list. For OOS B students, it is a possibly viable option. Not so for in state ones.

Here’s the updated list. I added Stony Brook, took off the A student schools (UFlorida, Smith, and Wisconsin-Madison) and Fordham. Someone more familiar with the SUNYs than I am should include whichever ones have confirmed strong Jewish life

CanuckDad,

Congrats on the “progress!” Have you considered Costa Rica? I could go on and on, but in general, an AMAZING country IMO! Especially love the Manuel Antonio region…

Regarding your efforts to learn more about deferred admission, look for item C18 in each school’s Common Data Set.

@Whenhen - LOVE that strategy! Cheergirl has a nice break between semesters and next week at this time we’ll be arriving in Cozumel for scuba diving and girlie drinks!

With respect to Tulane, for sure it has a sizable Jewish population but I’d add the caveat that it’s “mostly an A school.” CDS shows 57% of enrolled freshman have GPA over 3.5 and 77% over 3.25.

Cheermom. Yes my son is doing that and killing me with it. His idea was to wait to hear from Colgate and Connecticut b4 saying yes to Colorado College but now he is telling me that “mom, everyone skis, we all have the same taste in music and the girls are all really hot”!!! He and this one boy have connected on many things and this boy said on breaks we can go skiing at my house in Aspen… Based on that I’m shocked he didn’t commit immediately. My gut tells me it’s where he belongs ( I have sadly felt this all along) but I’m still not really ok with it being so far away…
