Colleges for the Jewish "B" student (Part 1)

There are two separate boycotts – one by the American Studies Association,
and one by the British UCU.

The [AJC link](<a href=“http://www.ajc.org/atf/cf/{42D75369-D582-4380-8395-D25925B85EAF}/NYT_ISRAEL_BOYCOTT_AD_080807.PDF"]AJC”>http://www.ajc.org/atf/cf/{42D75369-D582-4380-8395-D25925B85EAF}/NYT_ISRAEL_BOYCOTT_AD_080807.PDF) which PennyLane provided speaks to the British boycott, listing U.S. schools offering solidarity with the Israelis schools, essentially saying ‘If you boycott Israel’s academic institutions, you should boycott our institutions as well.’

[RVM’s link](<a href=“s. 2049”>List Universities Israel Boycott | Academic | American Studies) identifies schools which reject the ASA boycott.

I can’t speak to its accuracy (or source - tho’ I have no reason to doubt it),
but the legalInsurrection site offers a [url="<a href="Israel Academic Boycott | American Studies | Membership]list of ASA institutional members/url.

As regards asking a question, I’d be inclined to first reach out to any Jewish campus group (JSU, Hillel), asking for guidance on who within the school to address the question. As regards what to ask, I’d suggest something along the lines of
‘What is the school’s position regarding the ASA academic boycott of Israel?’.

Writing from Boston, where it’s a balmy 19 degrees.

Whenwhen, on the AJC link there are several Texas schools represented including the University of Texas system. ( I expect we are one of the petro-rich states you are referring to). UT-Austin is also listed on the link RVM provided. I was however, disappointed to see that the Texas A&M system was not on either list.

ExpatCanuck, thank you for clarifying. I did see that there is a Texas branch of the ASA but there website doesn’t say anything about their membership or the boycott. There is just a link to the national page that has the discussion. That helps a lot, I will see if I can get any information and if I do I will share it…Ha, a balmy 19 degrees, perhaps you can work on a tan!..But really I do miss freshly fallen snow, as long as I don’t have to drive it. I hope those of you in it can stay warm and enjoy!

Spectrum, I was referring to places like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Kuwait. The University of Tulsa actively recruits students from those countries with both its Muslim friendly policies (there’s even a mosque on campus) and excellent petroleum engineering/geology programs.

Getting back to the original topic, is there a list of the colleges for Jewish B students that have been mentioned up to this point?

There really is no comprehensive list. But it would be a great project for someone to compile!

I’m going to give it a try, will need assistance. So this is intended to be a list of colleges we have discussed, that are within reach for a typical “B” student (sometimes more through ED than regular admissions) and have at least some level of Jewish life/activity on campus:

I’m sure I missed a few! There are others that come to mind that are great for “B” students - but have very few Jewish students - so while they may have worked out just fine for some of our posters, I did not include them on the list. Please feel free to copy, paste and add if I have missed colleges ( and I am sure I have) that meet our basic criteria.

Thanks Rockvillemom and Socaldad. I’ve been working on a spreadsheet organized by region of the country and state for the various schools with solid Jewish offerings for B students, but wanted to make sure I hadn’t missed any. Should be done by tomorrow. Ahh the wonders of having nothing to do on break and a car in the repair shop.

Binghamton is on the list, but SUNY Albany also has a very high percentage of Jewish students. SUNY Buffalo is another option for Jewish B Students. And some state schools out of NY: UConn, URI.

For any newcomers to this thread, there are B students with super test scores and B students with B student level test scores (SAT, ACT). Big difference in admissions results.

For a B student with B student level test scores, some of the schools on the list really should not be considered a match: Rochester, Tulane, Miami, Boston University, Tulane, GW, Colgate, even Maryland. An out-of-state B student can get into Binghamton, but not a New Yorker.

If I was starting the process with a high schooler now, I would take this list, look at the Common Data Sets for each college, and look at my kid’s stats (GPA, test scores, rank). Of course, there are other factors, but this would be my starting point.

I know I haven’t been on here much, so to let new posters know - my DS (true B student) is graduating from Delaware in May, and my DS (A student) is a freshman at the University of Miami. I looked at a LOT of schools on that list!

I just want to say THANK YOU to those of you who have been through the college process and are taking the time to list all these schools for the rest of us. I’m sure that your hard will will be helpful to me and others just starting the admissions process. :)

This list is also great for A students. These are the safeties and/or merit aid schools for high end students seeking a Jewish presence.

I have been visiting this thread - off and on - for a while, and I’m so glad you’re here. I thought I’d send an update and some info. My D, who is Chinese and Jewish, wanted a very large, diverse, and modern school that was accessible to a city, but in a safe, pretty town. She was raised near Boston, but we’ve been in NC for a while, and she wouldn’t consider any school that was south of DC. She was limited by the fact that she has good grades from a competitive school, but isn’t a good standardized test taker; so we made sure to include some test-optional schools. We looked at every school from New England to DC, and traveled through MA, NY, MD, DC, etc. She fell in love with George Mason and was accepted in mid-December, so she is done with the search. And I am thrilled because she can get home easily on the MegaBus, and I’ve lived in the DC myself (went to AU) so it is somewhat familiar.

In regard to Hillels, it looks like Mason has a nice one (with some diversity too), UMass Amherst had one, and UMass Lowell (up-and-coming, great in engineering) was interested in starting one. Another nice (LA) school that seemed safe for a B student and seemed to have a nice Hillel was Roger Williams.

Updating the list per NEinNCMom’s comments, and offering [a visual](<a href=“http://www.oldwithoutmoney.com/images/schools5.png"]a”>http://www.oldwithoutmoney.com/images/schools5.png) showing
some of the marked GPA variability between a few of these schools.

Two short notes: I’m not sure I would include UMass Lowell just yet. They don’t seem to have an active Hillel, but would like to.

Also, I want to add a note about the concern (which we had) about Mason being a commuter school. I get the feeling they are actively working on that. They just built a new freshman dorm for 500 students, they seem to be pursuing OOS students, and they also seem to be making a concerted effort to have weekend activities. My D was aggressively pursued, and had no app. fee, etc. I asked her how she felt about lots of people leaving on weekends, and - as a bit of an introvert - she said she looks forward to some quiet time in the dorm. So I hope it will be fine.

Lowell lost; GMU commuter link added.

NEinNCmom: Congrats on your D’s acceptance to her first choice. It’s nice to hear that GMU is working on attracting more OOS students. A few student athletes from my area attend, but most students I know who visited chose similar instate options like Towson or Salisbury because of cost.

Great lists…very useful…I would wonder about including the university of wisconsin on this list in view of their increasingly difficult academic admissions criteria…I believe they are much more of an A or A minus than a B school?
