Colleges I should apply to?

Little bit about me:

  • 21
  • Will have Associates in science before I transfer next fall.
  • Will have a 3.5 GPA when I transfer
  • Have a EFC of 0
  • Majoring in Computer Science -From Chicago

So basically I am looking for a school that has a pretty small teacher:student ratio (would prefer sub 40 per class). Also would like it to be decently ranked, say top 80 on USNEWS national rankings.I would also prefer if it had a BS/MS program in 5 years program since i am looking to get both.

Places I have checked out already are Loyola Chicago, DePaul and IIT. I was accepted into all 3 but I want to see what my other options are. Will also be applying to Cornell since they have a pretty high transfer rate.

bump

So you are in community college now? Cornell accepts a lot of transfers, for an Ivy, but mostly from New Your state and you are in Illinois.

From what I discussed with their admissions office they get transfers from all over. Various state colleges, CC’s and other ivys. I’m not planning on actually getting in, just figured I might as well apply.

Are you a high school student who’s dual enrolled and will graduate from high school with an AS,
or
graduated high school a couple years back, now in community college?

Cornell’s transfers tend to be accepted to this college (like, 100 to 1 for the other colleges)

For the major you’re interested in, here are three CALS programs that may interest you (all with lucrative outcomes)
http://bscb.cornell.edu/
http://admissions.cals.cornell.edu/academics/majors/biometry-and-statistics/
http://admissions.cals.cornell.edu/academics/majors/information-science/

An obvious choice for you would be UIUC, which is Top 10 nationally for CS!

Another top program (not sure if they have FA for OOS transfers, do inquire)
https://www.cs.wisc.edu/academics/Undergraduate-Programs

You could also try
https://www.cs.umn.edu/ (they have FA for OOS transfers)

good teacher: student ratios:
http://wp.stolaf.edu/cs/
http://www.lawrence.edu/academics/study/computer_science
http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/computerscience/ (SUPER reach but good FA)
http://www.macalester.edu/academics/mscs/

An issue will be your EFC 0. Transfers typically get lousy aid. So, apply widely and look into value (a good net cost for good teaching ratio).
Loyoola, DePaul, and IIT, if affordable, would be your fallbac options.

What is it now

@MYOS1634 I got my GED 2 years ago and am now in Community College.

Thanks for the list of schools, will definitely look into Uchicago although they have poor transfer rate. Didn’t know most Cornell transfers went to that college, good to know. As for UIUC I doubt I would get in since the average transfer for their CS program is 3.8 due to overcrowding.

Also all the other private schools you listed seem to be Liberal arts schools.

Yes, many are liberal arts colleges with strong science programs and a history of sending CS graduates to graduate school or good positions, with good internship opportunities and a good career center.
UChic is the outlier but … why not? Same for UIUC.
Both UWisconsin Madison (really above all but UIUC for CS) and UMN-Twin Cities (excellent opportunities but very hard to get into) are large “flagships”.
College of Charleston (especially Data Science) is quite good but not sure it’d be affordable.
Marist has special relationship with the Tech Industry Upstate, but same problem, affordability.
With EFC 0, do you get fee waivers?

@mom2collegekids

It’s 3.3 now, I am taking 5 classes right now and am pretty damn confident I’ll get A’s in 4/5 of them ( prob a B in the last one).

@MYOS1634 Ahh I can see where you’re coming from then.

And yeah I get fee waivers for wherever I apply to via my CC.

Also quick question, what do you think of RPI? From what I see it has a high transfer in rate, it’s CS/engineering grads have a pretty good starting salary avg after graduation and they offer the BS/MS program I am looking for.

Yes, RPI, WPI, RIT, Rose Hulman are all excellent tech schools, but I don’t know how affordable they’d be.
Look into SUNY Binghamton and SUNY Stony Brook, NCSU, Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona.
Run the NPC on all of them to see if any is even remotely affordable (keeping in mind you’re allowed a total of $27,000 in loans over 2 years if you didn’t take loans to attend CC, and only $7,500 per year if you did take loans already. If your parents apply for PLUS loans and are denied, you can get $4,000 more per year. Add up to $5,000 in Pell Grant and $2,000 work study… That’s really not much so you’ll need “institutional aid” and plan to work part time :(.)
